I grow several hardnecks but Music is always a favourite. Large very tasty cloves and, once properly cured, it keeps well enough that I had usable leftovers from last year at this year's harvest. Zone 5B.

Anyone interested in buying Music garlic, shop NOW. It was almost insta-sold out at Jungs Seed (Local to me in WI) and MIGardener has already mostly sold out of Garlic despite it being back in stock Wednesday. Everyone loves garlic, thank you for the entertaining and informative video as always Scott!

Just an aside: My father was a lifelong gardener and grew garlic in great quantities. He was a believer of the health benefits of eating garlic and decided to eat a couple of raw cloves every day. My mother declared that when he started doing this, "Our kissin' days are OVER!!" We've laughed about that memory and will continue for a long time. :)

I have some mystery red striped garlic that was hiding in a bunch of weeds for at least 10 years because I just pulled everything out of that bed and found it (and we’ve lived in this house for 11 years now). I’m going to re-planted in my garden bed this year and we’ll see how that turns out. Eventually I want to try some other types of garlic. Thank you for the suggestions! I’ll try looking at all those ones first. :)

I was given some hardback 2 yrs ago. 6 of the smallest cloves I had ever seen! They came up small and spindly! I was disappointed and never harvested them. Lo and behold the came up early this spring and made me chuckle! This fall I harvested them and got some large cloves! I planted them last weekend for a real crop next year. Unknown flavor/variety, being a gift but I never knew the variety in heat! Going to be fun next year at my own taste test! Thx for the vid!

I did an experiment with 3 elephant garlic from Walmart and 4 regular organic garlic from whole foods. I live in Florida 2 of the elephant garlic rooted😁. the other 4 organic garlic never rooted. I took the 2 garlic and planted into a different planter once I see the leaves appear then they will be transferred to a larger container and then the ground. I am so happy that it only cost me 3 dollars. Already purchased the music and Italian garlic looking forward to growing them.

We grew eight varieties this year in zone 6a at 5600 feet elevation, a little under three hundred miles south of you. This was our first year growing garlic, and it was a lot of fun! Next year we are adding Inchilium Red and Kettle River Giant, sourced from Filaree Garlic Farm in Washington. Both are softneck and artichoke-type varieties capable of producing large bulbs. Larger bulbs and 10 or so months storage would be a great addition to the shorter-storing varieties we're keeping for next year. This year we grew:
    - Music
    - Estonian Red (a Purple Stripe variety, our favorite)
    - German Hardy
    - Xian
    - Marie's Rocambole
    - Chamisal
    - two others with bulbs too small to be useful
Many thanks to you and your testers, I enjoyed hearing both the differing and concurrent perspectives.

Just now we started two varieties of grocery store garlic in the ground, one each outside and in the window, they look vastly different from each other, and are hopefully different than the garlic we already have, that has been out of circulation long enough to be a sub-variety of whatever one it is~ Having researched the varieties, our longstanding garlic is prolly rocambole, ukrainian ascession, so we'll call it "Harbulary" after the batteries in guardians of the galaxy, seems very fitting~

Great video! I grow a common variety in my region called Russian Red. I tried a hardy (to zone 5b) softneck variety two years ago on the premise that it would store better than my hardneck Russian Red (it didn't). Last year I tried Music and I liked it's taste as well as it's ability to store well.

When we were little we used to eat handfuls of freshly shredded garden horseradish, and large amounts of wasabi by itself isn't a problem as long as one focuses on breathing while eating it. We don't know the variety of garlic we have (hardneck variety) but it's been in the family for over 50 years, along with the horseradish, so we don't second guess how it tastes. But now that you've shown us there are other things, I might go for a mild garlic just to fill in some of the need for lettuces we've been looking for all season. We tried all the brassicas so much that we're saturated with them, so we're looking for some sort of leaf plants that doesn't stop us from eating a lot of it, with the chemicals they stockpile to keep animals from eating them.

Hi Scott, thanks for this video. I've never taken the time to really notice the subtle or less subtle differences in taste from one variety of garlic to the next, but you have inspired me to take more notice in the future! Obviously your focus in this video was taste, but one other determining factor for me in choosing garlic varieties is how large of heads does a variety typically produce.
I'm a new grower of garlic -- grew my first large crop this season. In October of 2019, I planted about 18 cloves of German Extra Hardy, 18 cloves of Music, and a bunch of cloves from organic soft-neck garlic from Whole Foods. Typically, you get about 6 good-sized cloves per head from hard-neck varieties for planting (or eating/cooking!). I will not be repeating the WF organic. The bulbs it produced were not that big, and the issue I have with soft-neck is there are many more cloves per head, and thus they tend to be rather small and harder to peel. With the hard-neck, the cloves are really nice size and easier to peel. In terms of size, the German Extra Hardy on average produced the largest bulbs, with the Music a close second. I have saved 4 or 5 heads of both GEH and Music to plant in October of this year. I also ordered half a pound (I have noticed that is usually 3 heads) of Chesnok Red. Now, the decision of where to plant it all!

  • @maverick5006

Wonderful video! Have a restaurant willing to buy local garlic. Neighbor and I grew White German, Music, and Elephant. Elephant didn't get as large as the bulbs I planted, German White and Music did well. Most super market garlic comes from China and does not have the flavor of locally grown Hardneck. The aroma when sauteing is WONDERFUL!!!! So easy to grow, not much care, and make sure to harvest those scapes. They are great pickled.

@@lindav1189 fair enough. Spicy or hot like a mild pepper would be. It burns the tongue and leaves a hot sensation in the mouth.
As far as stronger garlic taste, I believe they mentioned that as well. Some will have garlic taste only, mild or strong. Some will add a spicy hot taste with the garlic taste. Sorry to be blunt, I found the video very simple to understand and your comment sounded negative. That is why I took the wrong tone with my first reply.

Some garlic is spicy. I love it. The main time I've experienced spicy garlic is out of my own garden. And it was just planted store bought garlic but had more to it, probably just do to freshness.
