So beautiful! I easily fall into the fantasy of Berlioz without any resistance. I hope this wonderful performance will be released on CD & vinyl record soon. Thank you for the music!
Wow! This performance has made me look at this piece completely afresh. The way the woodwinds played, it was almost as if the music was floating above everybody in that hall, quite ethereal honestly. Oh, and the bass players too! Completely shredding into those notes, I was like “wait this has always been in this piece and i’ve never noticed until now!” Pretty amazing talent here ✨
una grandissima edizione, che emozione. Direzione magnifica (grande Salonen), orchestra (sempre) eccezionale, ottima regia e immagini. Bravissimi !
As I have heard many times before, the acoustics in this hall is just super! Together with clever sound engineers this makes my listening so enjoyable. Thank you so much.
At 38:33 we see the timpanist uses alternating strokes with his left and right hands. Being a timpanist myself ,the composer intended for this passage to be played with only one hand . However, at this fast tempo it is extremely difficult to do that . Just my observation
The cherry blossoms in full bloom is a good match for Berlioz‘s gorgeousness and wonderfulness Now in Tokyo the cherry blossoms are in full bloom everywhere The scenery is out of this world I am listening to this masterpiece while watching the cherry blossoms in full bloom This is a blissful time for me
The Oboe player is often is an alcove offstage. The beginning of the 3rd movement is meant to echo Berlioz’s childhood near the French alps. This specific bit with the English Horn and the Oboe is meant to mimic two shepherds playing their “Ranz des Vaches” on alpenhorns. Hope this clears up the understanding

The bass trombone at 39:54!! So sinister! I love it
love to see Andreas Blau, the great ex flutist of the Berlin Phil here :)
Wissen Sie da was?

Merci ❤
I’ve listened to perhaps 250 recordings of Symphonie Fantastique, but none of them come close to the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester. Flawless!
We feel honored - thank you for the compliment!
Love Maestro Salonen's tempi. Music just flows naturally like the notes write themselves!
A wonderful thought, the one about the notes writing themselves during the consert! And I agree about the tempi.
They were certainly very nimble witches
Wunderschöne english horn solo!
Ja! Das ist unsere Englischhornistin Beate Aanderud! :)
Bravo!! Das Orchester wird immer besser! Klingt einfach fantastisch!!!
Danke für die netten Worte!

Bravi!! zwei Tuben:)
Huge musical wonder of a version. To relish & treasure.
And they say conductors don’t make a difference. Never heard the NDR better. And that hall. Magnificent! And Herr. Blau on flute. Wonderful.
Thank you for listening! We are glad to have you with us.
I like the guest principle flutist. I've seen him elsewhere before? Lol.
Always lovely to see and hear Andreas Blau!
A musical fantasy . So beautiful and spell binding. Every note is magically played to perfection. Thank you all. Bravo...
Thank you so much! :)) We are happy to hear that you enjoyed it!
So happy to have Salonen here as MD of the San Francisco Symphony
Yes, we can imagine! :)
I have to say, this is trade-mark Esa Pekka Salonen sound. He likes resonance that resonance.

length of the notes, he holds it just a tad longer when needed. very appropriate.

Because the oboe player plays off-stage! So he is actually turning to face him - not so much the audience. ;)

Is there anyone more mesmerizing than Maestro Salonen? No.
We are big fans too! :)
interesting Dudamel came from France Paris, while Salonen went to Germany.
you would have to ask players of the LA Philharmonic how they regard him. Philadelphia Orchestra days, like Mutti, Ormandy ...
