I grew up in Appalachia but now I live in Northern California. I closed my eyes, listened to this performance and I was back there again reliving my childhood and crying tears of joy.

I am with You! Living in Germany, I visited my New York relatives more than 49 years ago. One evening I crossed the Appalachian Mountains with my Uncles old Pontiac Catalina on remote and very lonesome, total romantic country roads in heavy rain. It was a wonderful experience I will never forget. Listening to this dreamy music I am deeply inspired to remember on this unique event for ever.

International orchestras don't play Copland as much as they play Gershwin or even Bernstein, while Copland has been held in the United States as the "godfather" of American music. So I'm glad Alan is introducing this to his German audience. Appalachian Spring is certainly one of Aaron's best and NDR does it very well...in one of the most spectacular concert halls on the planet.

Envision early morning on a Spring day, when all of nature awakens. My personal favorite for all times, I see baby birds fluttering, squirrels chasing about, deer in meadow and flowers and tree leaves unfurling, creek beds teaming with life.

Einfach wundervoll!

I was intrigued to recognize the tune of the old hymn "Lord of the dance " around 17:50 , the variations is such a surprise. Thank you, wish I was there!!! From South Africa. Also enjoyed the Spanish caprice you performed the same evening.

Loved this performance! In the final section the delicate lullaby like quality of the theme with solo flute and harp is beautifully expressed. Many performances tend toward a solemn and quiet majesty, a more tightly expressed and slightly impersonal realization. But I find I am preferring this performance where it is so gently expressed with subtle tempo fluctuations that seem so natural. It feels deeply personal and introspective in this version. Amazing

@@gerthenriksen8818 Good question! No, I'm not. By "bombast" I mean Gilbert slows the tempo down spectacularly and pounds away at the theme with an emphasis I associate with Furtwangler. Whether that's a wise approach with Copland doesn't prevent it from being impressive. It was a genuine surprise to *be* surprised by this performance. Have a safe and interesting week, wherever you are. ☺
