  • Why producing hand-made bikes in the middle of London still makes sense and generates profits.
BROMPTON, the hand-made foldable bike, invented by the English engineer Andrew Ritchie, has created a completely new market segment by providing a well-design, fun to ride and easy to transport bicycle without doing almost any marketing. Success came because the product's quality and word-of-mouth influence have made it a bestseller. In this video we talked to chief engineer William Butler-Adams and marketing director Emerson Roberts who showed us around the production plant at their west London factory where every single bike is personalized to customer's specification.

Actually Will's Spanish accent is terrific, better than mine! but gender fails in words are funny (with all respect and just joking. It's normal, you almost haven't got gender in English). Will, you are great, and Engineer, like me! way to go!

expensive? for a handmade British bike not!
last time i checked a triple heart bypass operation costs $60,000+
go to a local bike shop and most bikes are $800~1200 all made in china out of recycled aluminum cans

So what's wrong with recycling aluminum? Cans or otherwise - aluminum is aluminum!

Just like a Brompton bike. They invented a good thing but other people have used that idea and improved on it with modified designs. But the British will keep saying how good the original one is and don't come up with new models for fear that the old one will become irrelevant. So, they will say it is hand made. Is that an advantage to the customer? But they tell you it is!!! Ok...would a hand made computer which is 20% higher price make you feel better for paying the extra 20%?

e.g. This iPhone is handmade you know! Wow! Handmade iPhone. So ? So? So what?....But British is British. They like to say things like that. They keep saying that the Rolls Royce is a damn good car and influence you to think you look good in one. The fact is if you are old and smuck and un Green and just wanting to show you have more what others cannot afford, you will buy it.

Many British inventions are great. But the British are not good at improving what they first invented. Now, the Japanese , the Koreans and then the Chinese are very good at taking the first inventions and improving on it. The British invent something and then spend their whole life defending the idea and won't change. Example.......the Judges wear wigs and as time change, they become irrelevant but they will still sit on it and find all the good arguments to say it is good.
