I absolutely love your videos, I work at a game store and don't always have time to play everything that comes out (I'm their mtg person) and these videos give me the quickest breakdowns and are entertaining as well :) Thanks for your videos and keep up the good work
I can completely understand Tom's opinion on "The Island" as it was a very difficult scenario and I agree that if one side gets stuck it can bring the game to a crawl. The one advantage I think that scenario did have though was a very different dynamic that I have not experienced with other "Escape Room" games. When our group played through the scenario it was very exciting trying to compare clues and items to see what information was important while trying to get over this communication barrier. I felt it emphasized the "communication" part of escape rooms that is sometimes lost when translated to board games. It was also the best scenario for handling the full player count of 6 due to this mechanic which has led to this becoming my go-to scenario for game-nights and conventions. I own the European version (which came out months ago) so I have been sampling select scenarios and the demo whenever I can in anticipation of the US release (yay delays!). The non-destructive nature of the game and portability makes it a series I bring with me whenever I am playing with new groups (though Escape Room: The Game still gets its use). I feel that a 3 rating may be a bit low and that a 5 could better reflect the impact of Tom's concerns on the overall score (if I peg enjoyment and cleverness at an 8 with the other scenarios).
Tom, thanks for this. I went to my flgs looking for a game for my dad and saw Unlock. I know he likes escape room (games) so I looked up your review of it. In your final thoughts you said "I didn't like it as much as Exit The Game." So I looked back at the shelf and there was Exit The Game. I watched your review of that and bought it instead. So thanks.
Great review Tom! We're big fans of the Dice Tower crew going way back to the early days of your reviews... We enjoyed Dr.Goorse more than the others, but admittedly you have to split into 2 solid teams to make it work. Glad to hear you're enjoying the in-home escape room scene - we'd love to have you join us for a review sometime! :)
the island was far out the best of the three imo..., geniusly how they split the groups and how you can't communicatie until a certain point, never botherd me at all. Good revieuw though .
Splitting the group sounds cool. I was in an escape room where we had two groups of 6 in different rooms competing and even sabotaging the other team. It would be a neat idea to be able to replay the escape room game on a different team. Not sure if you can do that with the island, but it would give extra bang for your buck. Also, do you need to be online for the app to work?
Im waiting for an escape game with replayability - one and done isnt a strong sell for me - even if each box only had a few variations of each scenario
Agree completely, hence why I'm not a fan of Legacy-style games(although Gloomhaven is very easy to "reset" from what I hear). I always hate the arguments if a game gets 10-15 plays isn't that good enough. HELL NO, I say. I have games in my collection that have over 40 plays and like to hold onto those and hate the idea of having to trash a game once it's "finished" I may be in the minority, but the unlock games are fairly cheap but a game like Kingdomino, Capital Lux, Valley of the kings etc. that are in the same price range will definitely give more plays in comparison. Hard sell for me too
@@ramonosuke gloom haven has more randomability to this game with gloom haven you can play several times with different characters..... this you play once, solve it and its done. my son however is hooked and he will waste his money on it anyway. lol difference between a 47 yr old an a 12 year old... hahahaha
I've played 4 Unlock boxes and I can honestly say I'm not a big fan. Missing something small can completely ruin ruin your game without help from the app. Also, especially harder scenarios, try to be 'nifty' when it comes to puzzles. On more than one occasion I had to check the solution afterwards and after reading it, the only feeling I had left was 'wow, that was extremely far fetched' and was left with an empty and bad feeling that I had just spent 60 to 90 minutes playing something that I could never have finished in the first place. Also, the app does not work really well. Sometimes you have to point the camera to the cards and some augmented reality layer will be put in front of the card showing some clues but it hardly ever pops up on the correct cards which also breaks the game.

WAIT A MINUTE THAT IS WAY WORSE

I loved the third room. Much more thematic and challenging than the other two (which I also loved).

I bursted into laughs hearing that.

When do these come out?
How do I buy it? I found nothing in the official website
I thought the Island of Dr. Goorse was the best of the three

It’s amazing
Like a good D&D role player... NEVER SPLIT THE PARTY!!! Duh. Good call Tom.
Damn, where are Naomi Rapace ?
So I take it you need a smart phone or tablet to even play this game?

These were $45ish at my local Walmart. Seems super overpriced for what it is.
You can hand it to me if you like.
I enjoy your videos and by the way I sence the Spirit of the Lord on your life perhaps a youth pastor? :)
I have now played 3 of these and I think they all suck. A better version of at-home-escape-room game series is the "EXIT" series
its easily the hardest
Nope. As soon as I heard there was an app you lost me. I will stick with exit games.
