    My biggest complain about Time Stories is that it doesn't use time travel actively. Time travel is just the transportation device for getting into the scenario or for reentering it once or twice. But you don't time travel inside the scenario. Once you arrive you move around to different locations, but all in the time period. Since SU&SD spoiled the fist expansion as zombies, let's use that as example. In this scenario you rush around different locations, trying to solve some problems. And then you do it again when you fail, until you groundhog dag your way through the scenario. That's such a wasted opportunity. What if, instead of running around different locations, you used you time machine to visit different times related to the story? You would jump forwards and backwards months or even years trying to pin down the events you needed to fix to prevent the zombie outbreak in the first place. That would be a story about time travel. Time stories is not. It's just a multiverse connection device.

    Funnily enough, I wouldn't recommend it for the same reasons you do. However I do work at a board game café where T.I.M.E. Stories is on the shelf. People who want to set aside the 3-5 hours that they're gonna spend on it, will get more value than what they've paid for.
    When I played it with my friends, in that setting, it was tremendously fun, and we're really looking forward to having the expansions available.
    I'd say don't buy it, but play it.

    I think I disagree with your overall judgement of the game, but I definitely appreciate the critique! I really enjoyed the base scenario, so much so that I played it twice: once with my girlfriend where we explored the secrets, once with another group where I enjoyed watching them explore it. I think it delivers an interesting & unique gameplay experience, and I'm looking forward to playing the expansion scenarios.

      They need to consider the value of the game (how much time you get out of it versus how much you pay for it). There criticisms were valid, even if their conclusion was different from your own. Not many people would pay $50 for a game in a cliche setting that you essentially can only play once, and their review reflected that.

    I don't think I have ever found a game that just made say screw this up, I'm not playing anymore; you think that a game that uses the idea of you being part of an organization that through science send you back in time, that it will use a lot of sci-fi story building ideas, but NO! Every single mission, since it was written by different writers and done by different artists, have no single thing in common.
    One story has mystical plots, with having a hell ritual, another is zombies, another has a D&D setting, another sends to ancient egypt; but the problem is that, for example, you have to save a girl that will be incredibly important in the future, she needs to survive, but they never tell you why she needs to survive and... it never appears again.
    It doesn't build on what it did before, and even worse, every single mission uses different mechanics and ideas... that are never used again later on! And yeah, it is just the story, what about the game? Sadly, it is not a game that you can replay, and once you know what to do, then there is no point to do things, beyond the fact that you could try to do things faster.
    I was infuriated with the game, with the story, with the mechanics and I just said, enough.

    I have a café near my house where you can play board games all day for 7$, and they have a great selection of board games. That's where I play Time Stories, so I don't have to pay for it-- I'd never pay for it otherwise, the game would go to waste after one play. It should be replayable or more expensive but with either print and play scenarios or app-supported scenarios to go with the board. Either way, those games just stack up in the back of your closet until someone asks you to lend it to them, or you just sell it.

    I'm so glad this game was given to me as a gift, because if I had bought it I'd be disappointed. And yet, when we played it we were amazed at how we were playing a completely different game than we thought We did know there would be puzzle solving and combat. The biggest complaint and possibly the best explanation of the game is this: After our 2nd play through we had taken copious notes and drawn pictures of specific items and we realized that we've been to every location and that there were no more branches to explore, and yet we haven't solved the game. So we looked at out notes and realized that we had everything we needed to solve the puzzle right there. We solved the puzzle without even starting the 3rd round of the game, did the thing, read the card, and thought "That's it!?". I'll have to check the instructions to see if taking notes is actually allowed because we ended up solving the puzzle without possessing any of the pieces of the puzzle, we just knew what those pieces looked like.
    We enjoyed it, we're looking forward to playing The Marcy Case, but you're right, once you've played it, there's no replay value at all.

    I bought this game for my fiancee's birthday. She had played it at a friend's house and described it as "her favourite board game". She explained the concept and I was like "sure". We had a run yesterday, and I cannot find the words to express my utter disappointment. It truly ruined my evening. In games, we are taught to explore the environment because it is rewarding. In this one, the whole idea is to optimise your route as fast as possible, taking as few side-turns as possible, which is impossible to do on the first run, of course. I feel like they did this pursposely to justify the hefty price tag by making you play more runs... Very lame. I also found the whole mechanic repetitive and not rewarding. I was expecting something more thought provoking... Plus the whole "luck" mechanic when rolling in combat is very frustrating. You could theoretically have the perfect route but fail every dice roll, which will ruin your game.
    My fiancee was sad that I didn't enjoy the game, and told me that "maybe it wasn't a good present after all". Which makes me very sad, because I bought it for her, but the whole point was to enjoy it together... and I WANT to enjoy the game, but I just can't, you know? It's way too flawed. She said that I'm only frustrated cause we didn't win first try... Which is incorrect. I am frustrated at the mechanics of the game and some of its "strategies" in making you pay a considerable price for a hollow product...
    Wouldn't recommend to anyone. Good concept, yes, but poor implementation. I'd give it a 2/5, solely because of the concept and the design.

    We have played all of it and loved it. Yes it drags but that is part of the mechanism. Don‘t mess up or you have to go back to start again. And some scenarios are just brilliant and each is very different. And then there is the overarching story ... after each scenario things happen ... and then there are secret texts on the internet where QR codes on certain cards take and there is a super puzzle that is ridiculously hard and can only be solved without cheating by playing some scenarios twice, and there is some intergalactic war going on ... there is something great happing around this game that is not an actual part of the game play and I wish I‘d have any idea what it is.

      Eh thanks for your comment, I honestly just bought this for myself for Christmas, and sadly ended up playing it as a solo because nobody wanted to play it😭 I may be a very simple person because I really enjoyed solving the enigma, roaming around and finding the nice reward in the box... It's like a book-game experience for me but with more materials. I was now wondering if it would be the right thing to buy an expansion, and if I have to take all of them in order if I start, or if I can take the one I like (I really wanted to play the Dragon Prophecy one... but now I've got this cube from the first story and I don't know if I have to use it in the second scenario...)

  • @Bodyknock
    @Bodyknock 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I totally agree on the problem of the game requiring you to replay each scenario from the beginning every time you reset. It was one of the biggest factors of this game falling flat with all three different gaming groups I'm in who tried it. I honestly think the game would have done much better with my groups if it were structured more as a traditional adventure game similar to Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective where you explore each scenario as much as you like, picking up clues and doing things along the way, until eventually you solve it and get a score at the end based on how long it took. That's the formula the Exit games take, for example, and those were a big hit with my friends who hated Time Stories.
    Time Stories is easily the most overrated game I can think of in terms of its apparent appeal on some review sites and BGG versus the reaction I've personally had playing it with people I know. The design of the panorama cards are brilliant, laying out each room in a big spread is beautiful, and using the tokens to keep track of events as you progress is clever. But the game's forced resets and clumsy dice rolling really hamper the experience. My friends and I actually liked the Asylum setting, unlike Shut Up and Sit Down who hated the settings, and we still ended up not playing the game beyond that because it simply fell flat due to the game mechanics getting in the way of enjoying the story.
    Someone needs to take the panoramic card layout idea and put it in a game like Exit or Sherlock Holmes, etc, that can combine solid story telling and puzzle solving without clunky resets and dumb dice rolls. If a game like that comes out my friends and I will be all in on that!

  • @RiddleFlowOn

    Finally, established reviewers say what I've been saying: the gameplay just isn't there. It's an interesting idea that they totally fail to do anything substantial with. It's boring, unfulfilling and, thus, ultimately disappointing. The expansions get stupider and more clunky as they go on. I've given up on expecting anything from them. (Literally. I sold my copy on, though I felt guilty doing so.)

I've got the game, played it once (which is as many times as you can play it), and someone got an expansion for me for Christmas which I know I need to play sometime but I'm not willing to sit down and do till next Christmas. There's just a lot of better games out there that are less clunky, faster to play, and tick the same boxes in much better ways. Want a mystery: do Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective.

    • @steelbeard151
      @steelbeard151 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      They got ONE expansion. The game has 5 or 6 and more on the way, and each one is a completely different experience. What they gave was their experience, and they didn't like the game. I get it. What ticks me off is people pretending that this means the GAME is bad. No, it isn't. THEY didn't enjoy it. There's a profound difference. Nothing they said, not ONE SYLLABLE, was true for my gaming group, for example. For other games, the reverse is true. I'm sure I could find a game that SUSD loved that we all hated. I didn't mean by my previous comment to mean they weren't entitled to their own opinion about the game. I meant only that our experience was vastly different, whereas usually my group's tastes and theirs are aligned.

    • @Lexicondiablo
      @Lexicondiablo 7 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      They got one expansion: True, there may well be more but they didn't review those.
      Pretending the game is bad: False. The guys aren't pretending to do anything. They have given their reasons why they didn't get on with T.I.M.E. AKA constructive criticism. There is no pretence involved.
      NOT ONE SYLLABLE was true for my gaming group: Fine. We all like different things, but an unqualified statement like that is not a constructive or helpful criticism of their review. Was your game less than 4 hours? Was there no unpredictable dice rolling in your game? Did the end of your first game all make sense, answer all the questions and close off the lose ends?

    I know this is an old video but still, thank you for making it! I dig TIME Stories...to an extent. I liked the first 3 scenarios a lot, but then I feel like we got diminishing returns. Skip the Egyptian one, the Knights Templar and the Pirates - they move really slow and there isn't a lot happening that kept me involved. The 80s one is FAR more violent (adult) than expected, so be aware of that. The Antarctic one was pretty good, though admittedly easier than the others. Haven't tried the new version yet.

  • @Bugauanga
    @Bugauanga 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ok, I know that this is a very old video, but I feel that you guys should update the review with all the expansions of the White Cycle out.
    I played all the expansions (8 scenarios in total + base game) and I started now TIME Stories Revolution, the sequel (2 scenarios for now, called the Blue Cycle).
    Me and my 3 friends LOVED it, it's not a super hard game (mostly), but the sense of discovery it's always distributed in the right way so you have surprises during the whole game, and not all at once.
    When you finish a mission almost nothing is explained to you (in MOST scenarios) but that's part of the game, we found ourselves passing hours after a game discussing and teorizing about the implications of what we did or how the story will go on, the story isn't finished yet, they are still making expansions, I played 11 scenarios in total and I still don't know most things it's amaizing.
    But the best thing are the gimmicks, every expansion after the Marcy Case has a special new thing that spice up the game and most of the time makes you think harder about how you will use this new mechanic to complete the mission and just this makes this game very interesting because buying a new mission means that you get to play in a different way than the last one because of these gimmicks.
    I'd like to tell more about this fantastic game but without spoilers I can't, I'll just say that if you have 3 friends (in less it's kinda boring and way harder) you should try at least the fres downloadable demo

    I've heard a lot of complaints about replay-ability claiming each scenario is basically a one-shot once you figure it out. My question would be though how memorable are the scenarios? If you didn't keep notes on the scenarios (or how you beat them and) say played Asylum, then several other scenarios then went back and replayed Asylum, would you still be able to "automatically figure it out 100%" like many seem to claim?
    Also it was kinda disappointing to see a zombie scenario so I'm glad you mentioned that. I might skip that scenario.

    • @NickKinsman3D
      @NickKinsman3D 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're good at forgetting things, maybe you could make it work after a few years, but the pretty important bits are very easy to remember, and the less important ones are still broad strokes making it fairly easy to put them back together as well. It would probably compound with the fact that some red herrings are also hugely memorable, so you won't make the same mistakes you could in the first playthrough.
      I say all this as someone who absolutely loved TIME Stories, mind you. But I never expected to get more than a few sessions out of each box.

      The typical accusation is that those who review bad games positively are paid to do so - and to be fair, that's actually common in the videogame industry, amongst others.
      However, there are also people who learned to appreciate some products despite their various flaws, especially if it offers a unique experience.

    Minor spoilers ahead...
    T.I.M.E Stories felt to me like one of those older computer adventure games in which you moved through static screens.
    I came into it expecting a pretty good story (you know, based on the TITLE) and maybe fun use of time travel. So it came as a bit of a surprise that the story could be summed up in a short mediocre paragraph. And I didn't even think about the mechanics the game would use. There are barely any there.
    So how is this even marketed as a game? It's a short story you go through and to make it last longer you have to go through most of it several times.
    Very envious of those who liked it :)

    2:30 I have to admit... 30 seconds in the actual game and... that board, so white and clean, sanitized, and you show the cards and the people look like out of arkham horror. This visual style is a mishmash.

    Just played a friend's copy of this game and agree with your review in most areas. However, I feel that even some of the production decisions are poor (the plan cards slide around way too much, the pawns fall over too easily (and then roll away), blue and black token icons on the cards are hard to distinguish, with 4 players it's very hard for everyone to reach when they are Time Captain, etc.).

    I feel pretty confident in saying I don’t like this game, but there’s still that part of me that thinks, since this is really just a shell, it could just be that I don’t like the first deck, but I’ll never know unless one of my friends wants to contribute a new one. Big question though, did you guys solve the “riddle” organically? I came to the conclusion after about two and a half hours that something must be fundamentally broken because there was only one location we hadn’t been to, but it wasn’t referenced in anything we had seen so far. Now that I know the answer, I’ve spent hours trying to decipher it and I can’t. There’s no way I’d have ever figured that out without cheating.

    Have yet to play the Marcy Case. Think Time Stories deserves two reviews. One for the system, one for the scenario. Otherwise it's a bit like reviewing a game console on the basis of one of its releases. As far as the system goes, I give Time Stories a B. It's interesting mechanically, hints at the numerous possibilities that can be created for it, and it's neat to try something fresh. But The Asylum... my brother lent me his copy to play through, and again to play The Marcy Case. I disliked The Asylum strongly that I've been putting off The Marcy Case for over 3 weeks since he lent me the game again. The Asylum= D+. It wasn't that interesting, the conclusion was just dull, and oh yeah, there's an insta-perma-loss trigger hidden in the game somewhere. Yeah, in the game that says, "Try it is many times as you'd like-you just keep playing until you win!" That seemed cool.

    • @ariebarnard4062

    I got the base TIME Stories as a gift. I've had a couple of expansions as gifts and picked up the others cheaply (re-sales / good haggling at UKGE). Even having only spent about £60 on the entire game series, I still feel the price does not justify the experience. I really enjoy the game as a narrative puzzle game building toward an overall story arc but the price of entry is just not good value for money. If it were £25 for the base and £10 for each expansion, then yes, I'd recommend it. And maybe the Blue series / second edition will solve some of the issues (unlikely but I remain optimistic) but ultimately, its a fun game with some play issues and a high price tag.

    True, I was so excited for this game and its mechanics, but scenarios are so boring. Good for you that you didn't play Prophecy of Dragons. Story gets even weaker and you don't get even single solid riddle to solve. Big potential but very weak execution. I hope some other developer will grab this idea, tweak it and make some great title out of it.

    One-time experience? Not a problem for me. 4h? that's okay. Dice? I can live with that. Some repetition? Depends on the group. The actual heart of the game, the stories, are: asylum and zombies?..................... what? seriously? after that great stylish box?? ok, I concede, THAT's bad.

Only table top rpgs can give better gaming moments to remember

    • @tomatodamashi
      @tomatodamashi 8 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      When they are recommending games, they need to think about the investment versus the reward, and $50 is a steep price for a game you essentially only play once. You liked the game, fantastic, but you must agree that the criticisms they made were valid. The settings (an Asylum and a Zombie apocalypse) are overused and cliche. The dice mechanics just slow you down instead of leading to interesting decisions. The ending was lacklustre. And the timing mechanic was stupid because if you fail, you would just have to re-do it all again, with spoilers, without the mystery, and with less motivation.
      Not once did they say you can't have fun with it. Not once did they say that there weren't any good moments. You are arguing with points they did not make, so basically your entire criticism comes down to - they didn't like it as much as I do, so I disagree with the review.

    • @marcohoehener463
      @marcohoehener463 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @tomatodamashi U must really hate this game that u bash on everyone that has different opinion then the SUSD-guys. Look at their body language and read (or i guess listen) between the lines... for me, it clearly suggests that they don't think it's an overall fun game.

    • @steelbeard151
      @steelbeard151 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But that's what a review is-- it can only give opinions about whether it was fun for them or not. Nothing they said in this review is an objective fact. "The timing mechanic was stupid" is YOUR opinion. My group found the timing mechanic fascinating. "The dice mechanics slow you down" -- says YOU. Again, WE didn't think so. "The ending was lacklustre." Nope-- the climax of the first scenario tied everything together for us. So no, I don't agree in the slightest that "the criticisms they made were valid," except that that's what THEY THOUGHT. It doesn't mean that's objectively the way the game is. So yes... "they didn't like it, and I did, so I disagree with their review" is perfectly apt, and you say it as though there's something wrong with that, and there isn't.

  • @BrandonGraham

    I am still on the fence about the value of the game, but I think the story wrapped up quite nicely. We found out what the goal was, we found out how to do it, and we accomplished it. Did you want fireworks or something? Still haven't played an expansion though. Perhaps it doesn't do quite as well in that regard.
    It's worth noting that this game format allows other people to make scenarios to play. I am looking forward to playing one of those.
