Rodney. Just wanted to thank you for your tutorial on the “Villainous” game. As always, really helpful and thank you for all the work you put into your videos. I couldn’t leave a comment there because they were disabled.
The Korean version of Paranormal Detectives will be released soon. I'm eagerly look forward to this game!! And your channel is very helpful! Thank you! Rodney :^)
Fun game. We have played several times, with different groups. We describe it as Mysterium light. Generally takes 30 minutes for a game (of 5-6 people). Highly recommend.
So glad you've been enjoying this one Patrick! The comparisons to Mysterium will be there because of the theme, to be sure. I'm not certain which one I would say was the lighter version of the other... but again, that's why I typically stay out of the review side of things (every gamer has unique thoughts on such matters) :) Glad you've been enjoying it (I played it for the first time at BGGCon and have been playing it ever since - the family and I are now going through several of the cases together).
Incredible!!!!! Excellent job. Now I have to go buy another darn game. I am running out of room. I have to buy more shelves. But we are having so much fun with this hobby so....whatever!!!
That looks very interesting. I really like the illustrations, too. "A man with dice in his pockets". That could be any number of people I know! Also, Happy New Year!
I love your videos. I can't afford to buy any where close to half of these games, but I still watch these videos so I know what to get when I do have the money. Your presentation is so professional and eloquent. Thank you for being the best! Also, please do Hive, Sushi Go (all the versions), Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective, and... I'll let you know when I think of more! Thanks. Love you.
This game looks goofy fun! And it looks like u can easily make ur own scenarios if u play all of them! Only one Question: so after anyone(ghost or invest) uses the interaction card, is it discarded from the game?
Sorry to reply to such an old comment, hope you still read these - but does the ghost only ever do each interaction once throughout the game? Ie. Hangman's knot is played by Detective #1, do Detective #2 and #3 also discard this Interaction card? Or does the ghost come up with different "knots" each time the card is played again?
Does anyone else use the length of Rodney's videos to determine complexity? Anything more than about 25 minutes and I don't think my wife will like it.
I do, but it's not always a reliable method of determining game complexity. For example, Rodney's Arcadia Quest tutorial is about 40 minutes long, but the game isn't particularly complex. It just has a lot of rules and in the tutorial Rodney gives examples, which takes time to explain.
I've realized this I just bought robinson crusoe because of the praise watched a 45 min video and explained it to her... let's just say she will never play it with me
Nope. You’ll find this covered in the video, but the ghost gives a ghost clue after a failed guess. This means that one is played after each of the first 3 failed guesses.
One thing that was missed that I think is important; there are 2 cards that involve the ghost touching / holding other players (The Quill Pen and Ghost Touch) If you are playing this game where one of the players feels uncomfortable about being touched - that is okay as those two cards can be removed (I think there is something in the instructions about that)
I have used that suggestion as a guide for interacting with potential players. I explain what these two communication methods entail. If the person is uncomfortable with being touched on the back, I ask if the are okay with the drawing occurring on the back of the hand. If they aren't comfortable with that either, I offer to draw it in the air with my finger or on the table in front of them with my finger. For the quill, if they are uncomfortable with their wrist being touched, I offer to have them hold the pen near the base, while I hold the pen at the top. So far, those have all been acceptable. Of course, if these accommodations aren't acceptable, then we would remove the cards. I think it is great that the rules included this guidance in the first place as it a simple reminder about having a discussion about consent and personal space that appreciate. I also appreciate that it is handled in a very matter-of-fact, nonchalant, way.
They say, in the music industry, you know you've made it when Weird Al covers one of your songs. In the board game industry, you know you've made it when Rodney explains how to play your game.
In the rulebook set up page, it states “In 2, 3, and player games where Detectives are supposed to discard fewer than 2 cards, those players are allowed to swap those cards with any other Interaction cards from Detectives not in the game.” I do not understand this part. A two and three player game discard 0 cards during setup. I could use some clarification, please.
Point 5 of the set up says that detectives discard all interaction card without the player count icon that matches the number of players in the game. Then there's the note you mentioned. It is about people who do not feel comfortable with the two interaction cards that require some physical contact between players (Ghost Touch and Quill Pen). The note states that those players may discard these two types of cards instead of the normal set suggested by player count icons - and take something else in their place.
Yes. There are nine different communication methods in the base game (my group immediately thought of a couple of ideas for more communication methods that could be added to an expansion). Depending on the number of players playing, there will be more or less overlap of communication types among the different characters.
This wouldn't really happen. At least one player would always make a guess, because as long as they got at least one thing right, they would win, if no one else made any guesses.
Hey, thanks for the interest. I tend to avoid giving personalized recommendations. What I like, someone else might not - but hopefully you see a few games on here that might be what you are looking for!
Hello.. When I finish every scenario with my friends can i repeat all the cases or will it be to easy to finish? Couse i want to, when i buy it, to play it countless time.. 😁 Greetings from Serbia 🤗
People who know how a case is solved, won't really be able to play it through again, as they will know the answers to the questions, but if you are running the session for a different group of friends, and don't mind being the ghost again, it can be repeated.
ReMarkable, instead of Paperback look for Hardback. It is much better. Once we played Hardback, we never played Paperback again. It has a good app you can play solo on an iPad too.
Great video, Rodney! This game looks interesting. It kind of reminds me of Mysterium which was my first board game purchase of 2020. Keep up the good work! I look forward to your future content.
It is less abstract than Mysterium (which is a lot of fun too). In Paranormal Detectives, you are trying to find the clues to a very specific scenario (28 in the box, plus another 20 - and more to come - in the free Lucky Duck app).
As I recall, there are over 50 cases, and you could certainly replay cases, especially if you were the ghost and the other players hadn't played before.
It is a little more direct in some ways and a little more abstract in others. Also, none of the players at the table are the murderer, so you are trying to guess the five elements of a particular story. By the way, the box comes with 28 stories and there is an app from Lucky Duck that will give you 20 or so more and they have plans of releasing another 24 in the app in the next year and are looking at making it easy for fans to write stories and get them loaded into the app.
How many times on average do you play each game in your collection? That's a question I always try to take into consideration when worrying about this sort of thing. Some people play their games 20+ of times each. Others 5-10 times. Others have loads of unopened games in their collections. If you're in the 20+ category, than this might be a concern. If you're in the other two categories, maybe not as much? :)
What I love about this game, it's super simple to make up your own stories, so in someway has unlimited replayability :D
Oh yeah ,you can totally make up your own scenarios!
That box toss was paranormal!
i realize it is kind of randomly asking but does anybody know a good place to watch newly released movies online?

This game is begging for a playthrough, Rodney.

I hope you have a fun time playing!
Thanks as always Rodney, you're a hallmark of boardgame education ;D
Glad you enjoyed!
I've seen a gameplay video of this. This is 10 times better than Mysterium
I have it. It is really fun. If you look at it as a competitive (or cooperative) party game, it meets the expectations very well.
Glad you enjoyed this one!
Can we start a hashtag to have Rodney sing 'Won't you be my neighbor?'
Come to my house, I sing it far too much...

@Thoughts Things fair enough. I've only got the core game and I'm happy with it. No plans to add expansions yet.
I've been going by how soon Rodney says "and that's the setup."
It can certainly be an indicator of the complexity.
I've realized this I just bought robinson crusoe because of the praise watched a 45 min video and explained it to her... let's just say she will never play it with me
Love the character stands!
The detective on the left is totally John Constantine and he'd be the only one I'd play.
Love the ASM 129!!!
Do the ghost decide when to use the bonus cards during any time of the rounds?
Nope. You’ll find this covered in the video, but the ghost gives a ghost clue after a failed guess. This means that one is played after each of the first 3 failed guesses.

That is correct. I feel that's less of a rule, and more of a suggestion - a good suggestion though.
I have used that suggestion as a guide for interacting with potential players. I explain what these two communication methods entail. Yes, different combinations of the ones I listed.
Yes. There are nine different communication methods in the base game (my group immediately thought of a couple of ideas for more communication methods that could be added to an expansion). Depending on the number of players playing, there will be more or less overlap of communication types among the different characters.

It is less abstract than Mysterium (which is a lot of fun too). In Paranormal Detectives, you are trying to find the clues to a very specific scenario (28 in the box, plus another 20 - and more to come - in the free Lucky Duck app).
The Ghost mechanic is similar to The Chisel in Detective City Of Angels, only the Chisel wants nobody to win :)
Haven't played that one, but heard good things!
This is like Black Stories mixed with Cluedo, with the mechanisms of Muse in Party&co style ;)
Yes! Good description.
This looks like a lot of fun! I'm guessing the victim died when you didn't wear a checkered/plaid shirt for recording?
Sorry, you'll need to play a card with that question, so I know how to answer.
