It looks to me as if that roe deer was suddenly being bothered (bitten?) by an insect or tic on its body and was trying to get rid of it. It was shaking its head, which it would not do if it was fleeing from a predator as it would want to see clearly with its head held still as it fled.
I agree it was something definitely aggravating the buck! I don't know if they have biting flies or bees or such during this time of year, but something organic wad agitating this buck. Something definitely got his attention! Excellent video Sir. Excellent prognosis pm what may have caused this bucks reaction.
The best thing I‘ve found to test the wind direction are soap bubbles! Use either a child‘s toy bubble maker (the type you blow through) or the smaller ones sold for weddings. They cost next to nothing.
Hi Mike, just watched your latest video, how apt, my wife and I were walking our 2 labs on our local common, we have seen Roe deer there many times but today a Muntjac deer crossed our path, it stopped looked at us then walked on, no panic, dogs were on lead and never noticed, thanks for sharing, have a lovely Christmas.
Brilliant as ever Mike, thank you for making this, stunning video and stills, and great field craft skills. Very helpful indeed 👍 have a nice Christmas and a happy new year.
You forgot to look up at the tree, the leaves were enjoying the winds, the direction could be noticed and the deer was looking at you conscious, and the leap in the air that was amazing,he was in playful mood and grazing alone watched you mysteriously thinking to play a game, that was beautiful action of behaviour. You did capture good moments. And the light weight binocular type instrument showing red images and in true vision the camouflaged in between dry leaves.
Great video Mike.. when you are in a field that’s had sheep in it, grab some wool, there’s always some about.. then take a strand out of your pocket and let the wind catch it.. the best method for showing light breezes.. that or cotton hanging off the end of your lens hood.. hope these ideas work for you
Great video Mike. All very interesting and informative. I admire your patience. If you stay there long enough with your thermal imager you might see a red man with a few reindeer! Merry Christmas.
As always another fabulous watch. Great coat! I’ve got one too, really warm and great value! What’s happened though - the vids are coming through on Friday! Still great work though.
Loved the way u videographed them I would like to know more about the thermal imager you used If you could kindly share more details about it and the other gears used in another video of yours Thanks in advance and keep up the good work
Excellent video, Mike, and I learned some things from it. I think your little buck was just telling you that he knew you were over there and he just didn't care. A bit of a playful bit.
Interesting behaviour . It will be interesting to see if the Sony A1 mark 2 will be able to track/capture that sort of action in video. Best wishes for Christmas and New Year Mike 👍
Hi Mike, great video, It looks like it could be a case of this young buck having a nasal bot fly or two up his snout, I can't think of no other logical reason for this kind of behaviour. Seasons greetings 👍🎄
Use talcum powder in a small plastic container to keep it dry you want one with a small hole in the top and a screw on cap when you want to check the wind just take the cap off and give the bottle or container a sharp squeeze and you'll get a puff of talc coming out gives you the air direction straight away hope that helps you .
I used to teach stalking and I used a small plastic bottle with baby powder in it a gentle squeeze set a. Little puff of powder out which showed the wind direction
Great going mike, you are really educating. I, presume that deer was happy enough on getting captured by you. It is obvious that he has shown his free jumping stance in air, was an expression of freedom, happiness and getting out of his own apprehensions about an intrinsic unknown fear because of your unvisible presence. Yes, and when realise that your presence without any danger to him, he expressed his freedom and joy to himself. That's what I think..... Btw thanks for this educational session. Regards
It must be terrible being a deer, constantly in fear of potential dangers. This deer seemed to go from being almost suspicious of danger, then to be suddenly filled with an inexplicable and glorious joy for no apparent reason. Where I used to live in Lancashire there was no deer but on my last visit in July 2024 I saw several Roe deer. Merry Christmas from Australia.👍

Very nice video Mike. I sold my 300mm. I often wish I had kept it. Easy to be wise after the event.
Mine has a bit of paint missing so not worth that much.
Excellent work!.
Thanks.

The roe deer in the field near me have learnt to lick from the sheep salts buckets that the farmer leaves out for his sheep
Yes I have seen that.

Same to you.
Golfers use a bit of grass, as an angler i use my face
Apps like Windy will allow you to view wind direction. At least the general direction.
Why I don't use primes. Thanks for the new species, I'd never heard of muntjac.
Asian species introduced.
The rodeo was having a binky moment
