Let's Go Racing! BMW R nineT Racer - Part One

  • “Yo Sean! What do you think about racing a BMW R nineT and making a video about it?” I hadn’t heard from my old friend Mike Ngo for a couple of years, but he was still as straight to point as ever. I countered, “What no dinner, drinks, and maybe a movie first? This doesn’t include me buying your R nineT does it Mike?”
    Mike has an occasionally successful habit of trying to convince me I really need one of his vehicles in my garage (see my 2009 Piaggio MP3 400) every time his accountant calls to tell him he needs to roll back his vehicle habit.
    “No man, I’m trying to put together an American road race spec series for 2020 like what they’re doing in Europe using the BMW R nineT as the platform. I want to create a three-racer team, and I need the world to know about what a blast it is to race a Boxer against your mates. That’s why I’m calling you instead of someone who is actually fast.” Mike sure knows how to flatter a guy. “The plan is to race three rounds of AHRMA culminating with the Barber Vintage Festival this October. You help develop the bike, race it, and DON’T CRASH IT. Then we’ll show the world how much fun it is to race a Boxer-engined BMW and what an awesome platform it is for a new American spec race series.”

    Honestly, this is exciting. I know there's going to be haters but the idea of more relaxed racing is good.

    Aftermarket needs to design small training wheels to attach to the cylinder heads for worry free knee dragging.

    Kinda cool. Never been a fan of a design that drags cylinder heads on the ground though.

      BMW began as an Aero Engine company of sorts thus the Boxer Engine form factor (hanging out in the breeze).

      It seems they compensate with body position in turns. Less tuck, more hanging like supermoto.

    Good to see Osh is still around...he designed the "aftercooler" for my my Dinan supercharged '95 E36 M3, and then hand-tuned the software about 15 years ago, super nice guy (and the car made great power for a 3.0 S50, 396 RWHP was big numbers in 2004.)

    I like the idea of everyone on identical bikes making the racing a true test of skills between racers.

    I love my R9T and think this is a fantastic idea. Of course there are far better track bikes than this but of course that’s not the point. The bike’s a surprisingly fun little all rounder and this just helps push it further in another dimension of the sport. If it puts a huge grin on your face why not?

    The Boxers are such a great power plant- I love the torque, and with fuel management- the hp is there too, especially on "illegal tracks" :)

    BMW need to start making the RnineT racer again but give it the USD forks of the current RnineT.

    Time for BMW to supply the new 1250 Shiftcam to the RNineT model lineup.

    I remember the R 1100 S boxer cup bikes, although the series itself didn't come down here to Oz. Wasn't a retro series though. More of a prelude to the R 1200 S, HP2 Sport and the eventual major change in brand image that came with the S1000RR. Interesting look at putting together a series/team/bike like this.

      Yeah just worry about overheating engines...

    • @hankgs
      @hankgs 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      LOL, I'd like to see any of you so called "knee draggers" TRY to get the cylinder heads to scrape- You have OBVIOUSLY never ridden an R-bike...LMAO!

    • @shreveswat
      @shreveswat 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hankgs main point being saving A TON of money with a already setup and established racing series with a massive following.
      Once you get faster then the secondary concern would be dragging the cylinders.

      I've dragged pegs on the SV650S. That's a pretty good lean.
      MT-07 would be a great racing platform as well. Both bikes need suspension help, and ECU flash, and full exhaust to wake them up.
