I really think Euro 2004 was England's big missed opportunity. Had Rooney (in the international form of his life) not injured himself in the Portugal QF, then who knows what would have happened, in that game or against an ageing Netherlands team in the SF or Greece in the final. If the so-called Golden Generation were ever going to win anything, this was the one that got away.
Heskey’s daft foul on Makelele and Gerard’s party trick costs us against a France team that never looked like winning that game. A slo motion 3-0 win over Switzerland. A superb performance (one of Sven’s finer moments) v Croatia And after scaring the bejesus out of Portugal on their turf Rooney broke his toe. Yup, that one got away for real.
And Euro 2020 is even close than Euro 2004. With new Golden Generation like Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling: 1.Had a slow start in group stage, only scoring 2 goals. One each against Croatia and the Czech Republic. The game against Scotland are the ones that England should win easily. 2.Beating old rivals Germany, who were incredibly weak at that time, then had an easy win over the Ukraine. 3.In the game vs Denmark, they are not deserved to win because Harry Kane's penalty was a scandalous. Raheem Sterling, in fact, didn't get fouled, but he just got dived. Also, the Danish keeper was blinded by green laser before Kane scored the penalty. 4.Last, but not least, Southgate should not pick Rashford and Sancho as a penalty taker vs Italy.
Thanks. What this shows is what we have now and that’s journalists exaggerating our chances and making us think we are better than we actually are. This is what we see, where journalists hype up Gareth Southgate.
For some reason i really like Sven but he knew absolutely nothing about football and listening to him recently saying how he had to play Scholes, Gerrard and Lampard otherwise he would be crucified by the press and how he had to play 442 and letting Beckham do what he wanted on the pitch
How can the players be on their own in North Macedonia when clearly some fans made it over there. It's misleading even from the narrator who failed to see that England fans were present at the game. The FA did a poor job of not giving them tickets. Back in those days most games would have had up to 4 goals scored in them. Also you have games where teams won by 3 goals. Some others had 5 or more in them with 4 or more goals separating the sides. Some of the results back then were poor even by today's standards.
Michael Owen was actually Englands best player back then. Englands biggest problem in that time period was talent evaluation. They just didn’t always have the best players on the team and in the starting lineup. Beckham was way overrated and it became very evident when he left Man united and went to Real Madrid. While at Madrid surrounded by superstars he got exposed for not being equally as talented. At United he blended well within the great system they had. In that time period, Owen was world class, Gerrard was world class and Rooney was 2-3 years away from being world class. So they had 2 great players surrounded by a bunch of decent to pretty good players and that’s why they never won anything
tbf to beckham id say beckham had world class impact on a game (rather than wc player) prior to his metatarsal injury in 02 (97-02). Even at INT level we but all know what happened in 98 but he was a shinning light in 2000 in a poor eng display. But I agree in general people see the photos and question but forget everyone's primes were at different points. How many players were actually World class (form) in 04? Cole and cambell maybe? Owen was class but even he was on 1 leg casue of injuries over the years.
@@GOATZELWARDBANDWAGON. ya I think what you said is accurate and fair. I was also kind of saying that in hindsight England wasn’t as good as well all thought. Beckham was one of the most important and best players for England and he wasn’t that great. You’re definitely right about how he was after the injury.totally different player.
You don't have a clue about football, it's embarrassing. Owen was a great finisher, and when he had pace he was world class. After injuries and Liverpool rushing him back he was ruined.
England should never, ever, have a manager from another country manage them. There is way too many great English managers and way to much pride to have have a foreign coach. That was a mistake
England's right wing was stinkingly slow and totally unidimensional with Beckham and Gary Neville. In the middle they packed the space with 3 talented individuals (Gerrard, Scholes, Lampard) who could not figure out how to complement each other. Defence wise they were fine. The only iota of creativity which this so called golden generation ever had was on the left wing, most of the goals were created by Ashley Cole, Joe Cole and Rooney feeding into Owen. It would have been better had they consistently played Joe Cole on left, shifted Scholes in the middle along with Hargreaves and either of Lampard or Gerrard not both. They should have definitely dropped Beckham or Gary Neville and played someone like Shaun Wright Phillips there.
Agreed he was bang average. Look at the errors he made at Arsenal, in the end he was protected by a good back 4. A couple of examples being Gazza in 91 and Nayim in 94.
@@jrothweldo7 That’s a redundant stat when you realise he only played in 53 Premier League and FA Cup games out of the possible 92 games that Arsenal played in those two seasons. Even worse when you see that he played only 17 league and 1 FA cup game in 2001-02.
Beckham ruined our chances as he was allowed to play wherever he wanted and it must of affected Scholes, Gerrard and Lampard who aoart from Lampard were better then Beckham and Beckham being captain is a joke!

Euro 2008 was a bigger chance. Players like Rooney, Lampard and Gerrard were at their prime late 2004. All the players were in their peak.
@@OnmysheetThere's no way you would have laid a glove on Spain, Holland, Germany in that tournament.
Probably would have bottled Italy & France too.

Mental how Wayne Rooney's 1st game for England came a game after David Seaman's final game for England.
passing of the baton from one generation to the next.
I felt for Seamen , he was a fantastic servant in no.1. You could see the look in his eyes , he had one more tournament in him . Best keeper

55:33 what an impact Darius Vassell made
That boy ( who is in his 30s probably by now) who boasted about England v Australia must have felt a right mug
Luis Figo always looked at least 10 years older than he was😄
Must of drove Scholes mad playing with people that rubbish! The amount of assists he should of had of they could finish
The standard of English football was horrific back then😂😂😂
Club football was more important to us back then. Why the national team was awful
@@j_james_01Had England actually won anything, suddenly the national team would have been more important. Classic deflection.
They were still one of the best national teams in the world. Football nowadays is simply of a higher standard everywhere.

Michael Owen Was Handsome
Do you have England’s Dream Ticket, the DVD of the 2002 qualifying campaign mate?
Yes but not in its entirety because of copyright.
can you post what you have of it?@@csenterprises9632
David Beckham rescues England ONCE AGAIN. It shows how important and effective Beckham was for England.
time enables us to appreciate the players that delivered
Then McLaren ditched him for Downing in the 2008 qualifiers.
David Beckham played his best England's football under Kevin Keegan. That man even used him as no 10 in some matches. Delivered so well.
