I'd previously been there to watch Everton vs Liverpool,then I had the fortiune to go with my school to watch the Finland game. I don't remember the mini bus trip that took us to London and back but I do remember the wooden benches in the stadium and Mark Hately who seemed to disapear from the international team within that qualification period..
The money in it now has made the sport harder to watch whether you pay season ticket or watch it on the telly.Yet we still to this day 4 weeks before the 2022 world cup starts England have yet to win any tournament since i was born and i will probably end up in the ground with a headstone before England win anything and probably long after that.
Bit of a strange era; seeing players like Francis, Woodcock, Hateley, Anderson so prominent in the early qualifiers, but then dropped out of favour before or during the World Cup in Mexico, replaced by the likes of Beardsley, Lineker, Waddle etc. I have faint memories of Mexico '86, but seeing the set up of the team before this in the mid 1980s was very interesting. Well, Francis was far from his prime, he was a killer striker 7/8 years before, Woodcock was good, but a bit too old to play in Mexico, and the difference between Hateley and Lineker is like night and day.

Yes it was strange! Barnes was great here and playing for Watford at the time. When his career took off at Liverpool he was largely disappointing playing for England post 1986WC.
Barnes, Lineker, Hoddle, Waddle, Robson - all genuine world class talents. The defence wasn't bad either - Shilton, Stevens, Butcher, Wright, Samson. Add clever players like Beardsley, Hodge and Steven and you had the makings of a golden generation as good as any other. Problem in Mexico was that Barnes was on the bench too long, baffling. They played some good football in these qualifiers, Bryan Robson at his peak. Loved him in an England shirt and I'm a Liverpool fan. Wilkins shouldn't have started in Mexico, did us a favour getting sent off as it freed the team up.
How did we get from this kind of open play to where we are today? It's easy to forget just how things have changed for the worst - until you see footage like this.
I was at the England v Romania game as a 9 year old It was midweek and getting into the stadium was a nightmare We missed about the first 10-15 mins as did thousands trying to get it through the turnstiles Not sure what happened but fans were pissed off and got quite scary as a young kid

During the covid shutdown 2020 I watched a lot of the games from the 1980's. A lot of those games haven't aged well. Awful finishing in particular. We were lucky to have had enough world class players to disguise the general poor standard amongst most players and teams.
Football was more unique and less generic back then. Probably the better and more interesting for it. Dietary habits have changed Tactics have changed Skill levels have changed because the air of mystery between opponents is non existent. Every team plays the same now and most top players are multi millionaire mercenaries.

Once over, England v Italy would have been a clash of 2 very distinctive styles. I think football as a whole, has been swallowed up into a whole encompassing "one size fits all" framework. In the 90s for example, when a highly technical side played one touch possession football compared to the long ball percentage stuff that was the norm - it was a novelty and a sight to behold. Now it seems that every team tries to play that "high press Barcelona Guardiola" way which has ironically made the game a tad more boring and predictable as a result. England stink. Look at that qualifying group…should have been a walk in the park for a footballing nation of England’s size. But take away the matches against Turkey, who were pathetic, and we can see that England made hard work of this campaign. They were lucky to have made it to the quarters in the tournament, where of course they lost to the first good team they encountered. As per usual.

Actually, i felt England came alive once he was out of the team in Mexico '86.
Unfortunately Robson wasn't the last time England would take unfit players to tournaments, also add likes of Beckham, Owen, Rooney etc.

I couldn't help but notice the other night during the England v Italy qualifier how similar in style most teams are now.
Once over, England v Italy would have been a clash of 2 very distinctive styles.
I think football as a whole, has been swallowed up into a whole encompassing "one size fits all" framework.
In the 90s for example, when a highly technical side played one touch possession football compared to the long ball percentage stuff that was the norm - it was a novelty and a sight to behold.
Now it seems that every team tries to play that "high press Barcelona Guardiola" way which has ironically made the game a tad more boring and predictable as a result.

@@ianarn The controlled long PASS is not the same as the P.O.M.O. sky football of the 80s.Just howitza the ball aimlessly forward to the penalty area or corner flag and try to force an error.Around '85 it looked as though we were playing a different sport in which artistic elegant football was becoming a lost art.Wimbledon and Watford were the worst culprits and worse still were moderately sucessfull.Thank goodness Spurs,Liverpool and Forest eventually called time on the nonsense

England stink. Look at that qualifying group…should have been a walk in the park for a footballing nation of England’s size. But take away the matches against Turkey, who were pathetic, and we can see that England made hard work of this campaign.
They were lucky to have made it to the quarters in the tournament, where of course they lost to the first good team they encountered. As per usual.
