- How to Create VOCAL DELAY THROWS like a PRO
Vocal delay throws are a very common thing in modern Pop, Rock and EDM music. They can add some depth in a mix by emphasizing on specific words, lines or phrases of a vocal recording. In this video, I show you how I create Vocal Delay Throws to get the best results with a lot of control over that very nice mixing effect.

Hey, Chris! The TH-cam algorithm is still throwing your older videos at us, and boy-oh-boy am I glad. IMHO this is much easier than side-chaining compression or ducking inside of the plugin. Since I'm applying it to VSTi, simply create a separate MIDI track with just the necessary MIDI events, and as the Brits say, Bob's yer uncle!
Thanks from Italy Chris! I love your tutorials techniques! 🇮🇹❤️
This is what I have been looking for thanks, this tutorial touched my soul
Mix sounds so cool even through TH-cam. Beautiful.
Glad you like it! Thanks :-)
Thank you for this tutoríal. I have been using automatization on the delay sending but with your method I think you have got more control over the signal
You are welcome!
Loved your song
Thanks!
Awesome...
Wonderful - thanks, Chris!!
Nice video thanks man!
Glad you liked it!
I can't speak for other DAWs but Studio One has a really neat feature called Event FX, which allows you to add an effect to the currently-selected audio.
Good job Delay's Guru!
We enjoy all your videos, sir
Thanks for the lesson Chriss. U had been a good teacher always.
My pleasure!
Thanks Chris for sharing. Great and effective delay trick. Cheers!
This is another awesome video, Chris. I didn't even know it was called vocal delay throw. Now I know. What else am I missing out, with regard to terms and processes? Thanks Chris!
thanks for the video. I liked the song. I want to hear it when it's finished
Great tutorial - straight to the point!
thnx u so much!
Welcome!
Wow! thanks man. Jurado
Great Chris as Always!
Hey Chris, great technique, thanks!! 👍 Most of the time I use the sidechain compressor+automation technique for delay throws, but this is definitely a very good alternative-I'll try this on my current mix. 😁 Have a great week, Chris! Cheers!
Thank you, Chris! This is great, as always!
Glad you enjoyed it!
This is GOLD ! Big thank you Chris.
I have a question,
You called the stereo channel " Lead FX ", on that case there was only delay & Distroyer, but what are you doing when it come to a LEAD that has Reverb, Delay, Comp etc on them ? how are you apply it ? can you do this trick when it come to Reverb and other stuff ?
Generally, if you can please make a video on how you process Lead vox FX ( FX order/sends/extra stereo channels with fx , etc ..) it would be super helpful !!
It sounds super great! Way to go Chris! And thanks for sharing! ;-)
My pleasure!! Thanks!
This is nice and something i've seen done before, but now seeing your examples i think i'm gonna start using the duplicate audio way of doing things. Getting the vox onto another channel and chopping it up also allows for some slightly more creative ways of doing things, such as the odd stutter on phrases, or stutter builds into the effect, or maybe a reverse phrase into the main phrase or pitching the phrase etc etc etc etc etc!... nice1
Thanks for this.. but when you copy a word or phrase to the delay throw track, how do you get ONLY the delay throw to be heard on the delay throw track, so that the original word that is being delayed is not ALSO heard duplicated at its original time location on the delay throw track as well ? Nobody explains this in any tutorial video..
Dry/Wet mix, 100% wet
Awesome video! Thank you! :) Let me ask, when you create a reverb or delay throw, do you create it out of a completely dry lead vox track, so that the inital starting point is completely dry and then you create the throw out of that, or you also print the processing and settings onto it that you originally had on the lead vox before, too?
this intro is just sick btw 🔥
Thanks!
As usual pretty cool!
Thanks again!
You’re the best
Hi Chris, can you link to this music please? Sounds cool, it's a project of yours did you say? Where can I find this?
Selim, surely you can avoid all this vocal track duplication hassle etc by simply assigning an fx return channel with an inserted delay (as per normal) and then either automate the volumes of the fx return level, or the original vocal track's send level or even both to your heart's content, whereby you can equally precisely make the delays audible or not, at any given split second you wish: Exactly the same amount of absolute control, exactly the same result but much simpler routing.
You can stack even more effects together with the delay on that same fx return channel so you can end up with that specific delay character you wish, just the same anyway.
For sure...All roads lead to Rome :) I like to keep my Vocal Delay Throws independent from my main vocal track for way more control. I have that already setup in my Mix Template so I just need to copy the line I want to ''Throw'' on that track and voilà ;)
Chris is there a way in Echoboy using a stereo delay (dual or ping pong) to decide how much I want to pan right or left the 2 effect channels (like you did in cubase's stock delay?) thanks!!!
Good video as always Chris! I stumbled upon this technique after realising the delay made my entire track sound muddy because it’s applied to the entire track. But instead of using send and automation I think your technique is very promising! Or tried it so far and really enjoy doing it like this more ☺️☺️
Thanks Chris - From using VST 5.3 20 years ago then just coming back to music now with 10.5 Pro, your videos have really helped me get stuck in! Thanks a lot!
Question : What's the name of your new cool single and will it be on Spotify? That cresendo to the chorus when you stop the playback has got me wanting more chorus!
Great to hear! For the single, follow this link th-cam.com/video/z6Q3cUMvX3Y/w-d-xo.html
Sounds great Chris! also very catchy so I'm singing it around the house :-)
2:38 -- How can you visualize the sound wave in the automation channel?
Would also know how to show this..?
I use aux send automation for that. But there's no right or wrong after all.
Thanks for sharing.
Yes, All roads lead to Rome (that is the case for a lot of mixing techniques, Lol)
@@mixdownonline Funny, we have the same saying here. :)
hey Chris how did you get your audio to look like that when you turn automation on?
I actually have a video on Automation in Cubase scheduled for next week and I show how to do this!
👍👍👍
Can I get this project file with audio. It will help me to improve my skills. I wont use it for any commercial usage.
Chris, thanks for another great video. I noticed many people in comments have exactly the same question as I do. As I've been always doing those vocal throws by sending vocals to FX channel and then automating it on certain words. How does the first method compare to the standard 'FX send' one which most of us use? Pros and cons. I've noticed that many people have that question here. I'm really curious what is the difference. Thank you. I think it would be great idea if you make the video comparing both methods and explaining in depth the difference as I noticed it became hot question in the comments. Thanks Chris.
Hey Lucas, They both work well and will give you the same results...I used the Send FX a lot also. Why I prefer to add an Audio channel for this is simply a workflow thing. Faster to Copy/Drag on that channel what I want to add Delay on than automate the Sends, for me anyway. That's a personal preference, I shoud've point that out in the video. Good question!
@@mixdownonline so the end result is going to be exactly the same. Right? Apart from the workflow there is no difference?
@@mixdownonline Chris I was thinking about your method and came to conclusion that your method gives more control and allows to create more precise throwback than automating FX channel. Will try it in Cubase tomorrow though
Chris I’ve done those using an FX channel with the delay on the lead vocal itself and then automate the EFX send on the channel to just send the words to the delay. Then i can fine tune the tail of the delay by automating the efx volume (fader) if needed. Never thought of making a dupe of the vocal then cutting out the parts that don’t need to go to the delay. Do you have any thoughts on one vs the other? Thanks as always
This one gives me more visual control on what I want to add a delay on and is faster to work with, for me anyway. Both techniques work well and will give you the same results. I didn't explain that part very well in the video, sorry about that...I actually used the Automating Send FX on an old video.
Chris Selim - Mixdown Online Thanks Chris I started as a live sound engineer and then started recording before DAWs so I typically think in that frame of reference. Again thanks so much for all the great cubase info you provide.
Is THIS one of the prime pop vocal effects in the '90's and the '00s?
Hi, I wonder what's the title of the song, and how can we get it?
Great tips. I always used the second method, but failed to set the output to nothing, which doesn't work. Thanks for this!
Btw, in all of your recent videos I see that big mixer behind you (setup vertically???) Do you actually use it and for what?
That's a friend of mine who is storing that mixer at my studio. I use the premaps when I record drums
Sir I didn't get the answer, how to adjust vocals volume level and instrumental track level, so they mix well
Can't answer in only one line. This is what we call MIXING. Check this series I made on Mixing Vocals th-cam.com/play/PLHfS_0liDLINA3IGXMHEGIgU4BqpuRRHy.html
@@mixdownonline thanks sir for replying, Yes sir, I have already seen it, this series is very good, my question is, for the vocal track, set the volume like the volume of the song that it mixes with the rest of the tracks in the right balance.
Hi!! Thanks for this trick!
Just one question, every time I see on the right of your mix console that you have fader that are stuck and don't move.
How did you do that??!!!!!!!
Get that question a lot! There you go th-cam.com/video/z4-SyjKCX28/w-d-xo.html
@@mixdownonline HouUuuu yeah !!! Thank you ! And great job with your template, it's very helpfull!
👍
I have cubase 10 pro. The guys from steinberg realy do a great Job. But a week ago my hard disk crashes. And i made a new installl on my computer.
Than the shit begins.
I have great problems with getting the license again installed.
Email to cubase germany get no respons. Telephone no response because of corona?
I am looking for someone who can help me with using teamvieuw, taking over my computer from remote to help me out.
Are you the one who can help me out?
Oh, sorry about that. I'm surprised you did not hear from the Steinberg Support. On my side, I don't take any one on one clients for now cause my schedule is filled up for the next months. If I understand correctly, you have trouble with elicenser?
Sen Türk müsün goççum?
Lol, I know my family name is a common name in Turkey, but no I'm not Turkish. My father was born in Egypt.
A good complement to your video th-cam.com/video/f3nru61lQls/w-d-xo.html where at 7:07 you talk about throws. Actually I have used it that way, controlling with automation the amount of send to the FX channel. And I have used it until now only with ping pong delay in 1/4 note. I must try with stereo L 1/4 and R 1/2 or similar.
Oh yeah, I forgot about that one!
Chris Selim - Mixdown Online I don’t 😹. Well, the reason is that, to order my practice, I decided to take notes about the main aspects of each technique (different uses of reverb and delay, for example), and put each of them together with the link to a video in a document. So it is easier to remember the many different things and to experiment with the techniques and variations.
