The comments are so right....... Your aunt and uncle are absolute angels. The cancelling of the name on the book to change it to Dani. They love you. We want to hear more from them, perhaps even write a version of that same book and have your aunt & uncle write it and you animate it? A book, a series, a short movie - whatever! I truly believe that will make such a huge difference in so many people, caregivers, parents, etc’s lives..... You 3 together can change the trajectory of so many!!
Humans are naturally inclined to fear what they don’t understand. I’m on the autism spectrum and due to a broken education system, I was wrongly labeled as having an IQ of 80 and told that I would never aspire towards anything greater than bagging groceries (though a noble profession). In reality, tests tailored to my needs showed that my IQ was in the above average to gifted range, though this would unfortunately end up being obscured by a lackadaisical school board. Considering the above, my mother and family had little hope for my future, but my father didn’t, he saw what I was capable of and taught me not to allow myself to be defined by the proverbial standards imposed upon the socially challenged and with his support, I went to university, got into nursing school, graduated with my bachelors degree summa cum laude and recently was accepted into a prestigious doctoral program to become a nurse practitioner, which I start next year. Ultimately, success for those on the spectrum is largely predicated on advocacy and support, something Dani’s aunt and uncle provided her with and as a result, she’s been remarkably successful. Tragically, too many gifted individuals on the spectrum fall through the cracks and never realize their full potential, due to a lack of support, a statistic that Dani’s parents almost made her a part of.
Some people just hear that autism is genetic, and take it personally because it sounds to some people like an insult to their family genes. Fortunately my parents were smart enough to understand that "genetic" doesn't always mean that it runs in the family. It just has to start somewhere. They didn't always deal with my autism very well, but they dealt with it a hell of a lot better than her parents did.
wow! I can relate to feeling devastated when being diagnosed with autism, because I was diagnosed with Asperger' Syndrome at age 14 back in 1998, didn't know what that was. Just heard it was a behavior disorder, but it sounded like some foreign word to me. I thought maybe I had some kind of German disability or something. And then in the spring of 1999, was when I had learned that Asperger's Syndrome was in fact a milder form of autism, I became devastated when I learned that. And I didn't want to be autistic, nor did I want anyone from school to know I was, either. So, I get that part.
