Thinking I might try your course. I’ve got 20 years of playing the most classic difficult pieces badly and not memorizing when I finally learn them and move to the next one. Never had a single lesson or had a routine. Do you think your course can give me what I’m missing?
What a special friendship these guys have. A guitarist and a luthier, I wouldn’t be surprised if they stayed friends until they’re both old and grey and I sincerely hope they will still be making videos like this then
I really appreciate you putting the titles of the pieces on the video Brandon! As someone who's relatively new to classical guitar, it helps a ton to put a name to pieces I've heard a million times without knowing the name, or even pieces I've never heard.
"Around the 12th fret on the third string I'm hearing a boing-iness on the other one and a clarity on this one..." Just, wow, that Marshall can pick that out with all of the other sonic information. I suppose you have to be able to, if your job is to know the sound of your instruments and know what makes it, but that's just incredible.
I dont want to disregard his ability. He is definitely skilled, but i will say that if you know the music or songs its a bit easier to know the fret and string. Still impressive tho tbh
Yes indeed. What strikes me is that here, as in digital audio tests, what enables the real experts to detect differences is very specific details, rather than some general quality.
That first Hauser is beautiful. Closing my eyes and listening to it there is this "moreishness" that Marshall implies perfectly. Also that "Torres" is super interesting.
I now know that you read these Marshall, and Brandon of course, PLEASE do more of these videos! Its such an honor to listen to the different guitars and hear you talk about the differences! I could easily watch a new one every week and be very happy!
Gosh your playing really is so inspiring. You understand each instrument, each piece, each luthier, each note, each composer, and bring it all to life. You appreciate every tiny detail, yet you never lose the bigger picture. You never impose yourself on any of these elements either, you simply explore and enjoy them all. Thank you, I always learn so much here 🙏
those classic instruments, even for a nonplayer like myself, the qualitative difference is astounding. there's quality, and then there's transcendent, otherworldly tonality.
I'd love to see another collaboration with Marshall talking about the different styles of classical guitar and what makes them different from one another. I know quite a bit about steel string guitars, but now I'm on a classical guitar kick and it would be interesting to me, at least, to learn how the classical/flamenco guitars are braced and different construction oddities. Thanks for your awesome work Brandon! I love watching both of y'all.
amazing guitars and amazing playing 👍🏻♥️ I listened to this video without watching it first and it's was awesome to hear the intricacies and the quality of these instruments
This was a fantastic video. All the guitars sound amazing. The best part is just the playing and the discussion between the two of you the challenge isn't really important but it adds a structure and narrative that makes the video a lot more fun to fallow. Thank you.
You just need to make an album of all these songs you play! I'm always hearing something new when I listen to your videos and even your versions of things I do know are generally the best I hear. Let's have it!! EDIT- yes.....prayer answered. I see it. Download in progress!! 👏. I'd also like to hear just a little bit about what's so special about a Fleta vs Torres vs Hauser.
These videos with Brandon and Marshall in the shop are wonderful! Its such nice atmosphere just listening to Bradon play and you guys hangout and talk about the guitars just makes me feel good. As a metal guy who inly has electrics im surprised how much these videos captivate me, especially the ones of the two of you in the shop. Also the little bit Brandon played at 7:00 was very nice!
Wow he is the rainman of luthiers. This was so interesting. As an extremely frugal person (my guitar was $300 and I don’t plan on upgrading) who has always justified not buying a decent guitar this was a bit jarring. The sour grapes are real lol. I still believe that there is demonstrably a diminishing return on investment once you get above the $1500 mark, but wow I’m impressed by the nuance that is actually intelligible to your ears. What is even more astonishing is that once Marshall described what I was hearing I could hear the difference too. I definitely don’t possess superhuman powers like you both do, but the fact that this ability to distinguish is apparently semi teachable is astounding. Please do more of these. If you do, you might be able to convert me to buying something a little nicer and practicing more often lol.
I love these videos. So inspiring. Brandon’s love of the music and and expression played on these beautiful guitars and Marshall’s expert insights into how they are made. Hope to visit someday. 👏🎶
This was so much fun! Please keep doing these videos. That Santos was gorgeous! I will be dreaming about it for the rest of the night. Maybe Marshall will let you play it for a longer video so we can hear more of its beautiful, sonorous tones. Now I want to learn more about Santos. The real find for me today was the Simplicio. I was quite taken by the sound of this instrument. Since never having heard of this luthier, I feel compelled to ask Mr Google to tell me more about him & his guitars.... Incidentally, my classical guitar is Fleta copy built by a wonderful luthier near me named Ivon Schmukler. It is a very large guitar and unfortunately, now that arthritis is becoming more of an issue for my small hands, it is getting harder for me to play. I hate the thought, but I might have to start looking for a classical guitar that is a bit smaller, but still sounds like a big guitar that is capable of big dynamic ranges like my Fleta copy.
Serious question for Marshall and yourself: Are piano-like qualities in a guitar a kind of bench-mark for "sound satisfaction"? I would love a follow-up video on why the piano comparison is made. Excellent video as always. I wish I was in the room with you both.
I should have watched the whole video before asking, as I hit play again and my question was 90% answered - every stringed instrument out of shot was talking back to the guitar being played. OK now I get it. Still would love a follow up video on this very subject.
Love your vids!! maybe in the future try these challenges but he has to pick it out of a small pool of guitars rather than 2 :) (might be too long I don't know)
Pure zen.. . Yeah Yeah.... sure... I'm the one with the [In walks weirdo] T-shirt... metalhead timber framer (yeah - told ya) and I'm well impressed with the both of you... your depth, access, width... everything. Nerd away. Please! Whatever you're pondering over a beer, thinking: That's too far out there! ...do that!
I guess this goes to show that some more recent luthiers are matching, and in some cases surpassing, the skills of their forebears. Plus they have the advantage of a lot of nice tools that weren't available in years past.
The first comparison let me surprised he missed: all vintage guitars Ive ever have the chance to listen have that dark undertone and better definition. About number 3: his dad's replica is better than the original, imho. What a great guitar.
Your playing was very subtly different between the originals and the replicas. You get more into the music playing the originals. The only one I couldn't tell was round 4, which made sense after the fact. Great episode!
I guess because the microphone was placed to also pick up the speech, we can hear Brandon breathing when he's playing. Made me remember my first music teacher say that you should breathe with the music😀
If those ears could talk... MMIA My Mirth Is Audible They can. Marshall is brilliant. BTW I'm trying to learn the ROTO on my tenor and new baritone ukulele. I'm trying to take baby steps.
Let me tell you that I love this kind of videos. It's always fantastic to hear great guitars being played by a great musician. Having said that I would like to add a little criticism: none of the guitars - none of them - really impressed me listening to the video. I would say that unfortunately the recording doesn't do justice to the guitars. I can very well hear the differences between original and replica as well as the sound differences between the models. But the sound in general overaccentuates the mid range. The treble strings seem a bit weak on all instruments which in the room certainly was not the case. So, unfortunately I as a listener was not impressed with the sounds that I heard as you both were in the room. Hope this makes sense. Keep up the good work!
What would confound me would be that a replica might be so good that there really is no difference, (or GF it might be better) Also I find that atmospheric pressure makes a difference.
Each of them sounded beautiful. That last one was phenomenal. And Marshall's ears for the details of each guitar is also a phenomenon in and of itself. Unrelated: It might be time for a new camera. I'm not expecting 4K HDR, but the strings (especially for the zoomed in cuts) look aliased (AKA blocky) and other visual details are a bit soft (not in an out-of-focus way, but in an at-the-limits-of-the-camera way).
Ok, so we go to a music program at a church. We hear various singers, some enjoyable some to close to the mic. Then Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Stanford Olsen and Marylin Horne come out to sing with no mics and we forget who else sang. The Brune Hauser and and the Santos Torres would sing very very nicely together. Oh some may not know Stanford Olsen th-cam.com/video/AAqtPyw7hXM/w-d-xo.html
This test should be done double blindfolded (also Brandon play blindfolded) because the player can introduce unconscious bias - play more carefully with the original. Some people can detect that and decide on it.
Agree about double blind (if it’s possible to play blindfolded-not a guitarist!). I was just thinking this; especially in 2nd set, there was something in Brandon’s expression with the second guitar that made me think he was playing differently.
I love this video, but IMO it really shows that there is virtually no difference between the guitars. If a true professional can't sort them out, somebody like me will NEVER be able to tell them apart. If you REALLY wanted to test this out, instead of two guitars, play ten guitars with nine replicas. I doubt he would be right more than 10% of the time.
Changing strings can make a big difference to the guitar sound. It's worth trying different makes of strings on your guitar, and keep in mind that "expensive" strings won't necessarily sound "better" on your guitar. You will probably need to try different strings yourself, since the language used to describe their sound, like "natural," doesn't translate well from ear to ear.
It's not just the sound that matters. It is the playability as well. Better to do a comparison with the guitarist rather than the audience. That said, a concert level classical guitarist can make a well-made entry level classical guitar sound amazing.
Exactly! In fact, Marshall and I did many videos comparing different priced guitars and the conclusion everytime was playability is the most jmportant factor.
@@brandonacker Thanks for your response. I am a mediocre classical guitarist on my best days. However, I can say that a concert level instrument does make a difference. I had the honor of going over to Tom Humphrey's apartment in NY back in the mid 1980s to try out his guitars. He had three that were completed. I sat down on his couch and had an almost mystical experience (given that I am a hard-core scientist, that is a big deal to me). It was though the guitar played itself. I sat there holding this work of art and amazing sounds were coming out. I immediately asked about purchasing the instrument, but he said that it was already taken, and he had a 3-year waiting list. Plus, the price was over half my salary at the time. I will never forget that wonderful day in mid-town Manhattan. RIP Tom.

It was fantastic having you over! This was a ton of fun!!!!
always a fun video when you're here marshall!❤
you’re so lucky to have had so many private mini-concerts from brandon, what an experience! and what amazing ears you have!!
And what strings did you use?
@@hargisP2 Optima strings. All in tis video were 270 MT.

Ill say this on every one of your videos i watch. You make the best classical guitar content HANDS DOWN. Its not even close.
Thank you:)))
I love these collab videos with Marshall, always an instant watch for me! Thanks Brandon and Marshall!
That first Hauser is beautiful. Closing my eyes and listening to it there is this "moreishness" that Marshall implies perfectly. Also that "Torres" is super interesting.
Always love seeing the two of you collaborate. Marshall does it again - those ears can pick up on everything

That last guitar just sounds amazing. The harmonic strike at the end just goes on forever.
please never stop making these videos. I love them
Would love a Spotify album of you plaging these songs
Dude your playing in this one is especially good!!
The round 3 ones were so incredible! I actually got tears in my eyes from it. Great job Brandon!

The last guitar is the final answer. Love that guitar.

What kind of money to buy one ?
It was gorgeous

Can you do the challenge with flamenco guitars?
Also, why was Marshall working on your Itzkin? It looked like your guitar in one of his videos.

$500 off a guitar? Now I'm really scared of looking at the prices. 🧐👍

I found myself having a preference for the replicas
Fabulous thanks
Marshal, what strings do you use on these?
