I have been following this channel recently. Great work JC! The points made here are very articulate and would greatly help our student community. While pursuing UG-level research may sound like an excellent idea, we should also convey that this is not a necessary thing for all students - so don't feel compelled. In fact, many students (even very high-graders) dislike it because of the associated uncertainty and the fact that even diligent efforts don't guarantee research productivity, unlike course work ... and this is entirely normal! I see many students intending to work on research projects - only to find later that the forcing function for such intentions is solely a recommendation letter and not really genuine inquisitiveness in problem-solving. Hence it would be highly beneficial for the mentors if students communicate their agenda or research motivation upfront - they can be allotted tasks accordingly. (I am a faculty member at IIT Madras)

I am a first year UG student at IIT Kgp, and keenly interested in Research, this video gave me a lot insight into UG research...Thank you One question : When is the best time to start UG research?
Good question. I have touched on this point in an earlier video: th-cam.com/video/uWpHh-_Zfhw/w-d-xo.html Basically, after your 3rd semester you have some experience with the Department subjects and then you can approach a Prof.
You are spot on about the fem software. A high-level engineering problem to be solved from the PDEs as the first principles is such a Ph.D. thing anyway.
Very true regarding commercial softwares. My friends were bragging how they know ansys fluent, but when I asked them what is Navier stokes equation, they were silent. My response was without learning the physics and maths before learning the analysis software is like playing video games on computer.
That is even another level worse! At least I was talking about students who did know the basics of the subject but were not aware of the backend of the package in terms of the numerical methods being used.
@@Prof_JC this is the actual problem sir, in most of the private collages things like navier stokes are not taught, infact convection is also reduced to just empirical relations with no rigorous mathematical backing. As you said we are linving in the golden age of info thefore i had the privilege of watching lectures by legends legends like late Prof Som, Prof S. Chakarvorty etc via Nptel. Regarding numerical analysis the less said the better, we were taught method like crank Nicolsan methods to solve pdes but were never taught basic pde s like heat, wave, poison etc. In class of numerical analysis even the class clows were getting straight As as the class was just reduced to formula mugging and who can use the calculator the fastest, same was the case with FEM, just matrix manipulations. All the points are totally correct! Another point can be an issue for funding to publish at top international conferences. I'm in my final year (ECE) from a private university in India with a very minimal research culture but I was able to first-author 8 publications, and some of them were extremely hard to fund myself by exhausting internship stipends.

Good Attempt to guide aspiring students. I am also doing something like this in a different way to provide training for research students to help them write their own patents while they write their papers for publication or presentation. Of course it is for a fee and it is nominal.
Sir can you please advise on how we undergrads can understand which ideas are actually useful and which ones are childish? Sometimes when we do get ideas, there is this usual fear that it might be so childish that it already could have been outdated or it probably was already in progress or done. How to confirm if we are doing relevant work sir?
At the very outset it is not wise to try to come up with ideas. First of all start by discussing with the professor you are working with. Do some work. Read a lot. That will give you some experience in what is doable, what is interesting and significant. Once you gain some maturity like this, you will yourself find that you are capable of thinking of ideas in a realistic way.
If you ever thought you came up with something, 99.999% of time, someone has already cone up with it. But it's that joy of putting together things that drive researchers. That moment of feeling smart is all the game here.

I have an issue of going very deep into the theory of the subject matter before doing something actionable. I do so as (a) I have always felt that before doing something I should have proper knowledge of that thing in order to mitigate mistakes (b) ignorance makes me very uncomfortable. This mindset often makes me very unproductive which is looked down upon when you are pursuing an engineering degree. So given my present mindset, how should I transition into a more productive/engineering mindset? Please throw some light on it.
We have to be pragmatic and learn to find a balance. There is no end to going deep. If you need to convince yourself, try to think that once you start doing something hands-on it can actually deepen your understanding. Sometimes you will realize after doing something that ... oh that's why in the theory they mentioned that assumption or cautioned about such and such a condition. And then after you start doing things if you go back to reading once more you will realize that you have a far greater insight than before.
@@Prof_JC Thank you for the reply sir. I have a follow up question. I have a tendency to go through proofs very rigorously of complex topics. I do that in an attempt to understand the topic from the very first principles. But of course that's often very time consuming and exhausting. So I wanted to know, to what layer should we invest in understanding a topic specifically of an engineering subject. I have always been sceptical of blackboxing things, but if someone convinces me that it is no crime to do that, it will remove a huge burden from my subconscious mind.
@@Prof_JC I'm from Electronics and Communication department, but I've inclination towards software engineering. Actually I would like to rephrase my question. Let me put it this way: My question is about a very fundamental issue, that is, the way we have to absorb information in engineering (both academia and industry). We are expected to learn facts about certain topics, and apply them in a project in a short span of time. In industry, as I understand, it only matters to "get things done". But I always tend to dig deep in the theory, taking my time understanding every detail of the topic. I want to have a good grasp of a topic before applying it. But in a strict deadline of a project, it is not always possible to do so. So how do I convince myself that it's okay to be not knowing about a topic completely before applying it? (Note: It would be of interest to you to know that I'm in second year presently, so I have very limited experience as for any real engineering work.)
@@agastyasrivastava4012 Thanks for explaining your situation so clearly. I don't have any experience with ECE subjects. However, to answer your general question, yes it may seem that way that we have to sacrifice in-depth understanding to get things done for the immediate requirements. And that is sometimes true. But know this that you can always come back later to really go deeply into it. For instance, I teach solid mechanics, elasticity etc. You wouldn't believe the number of times I have read and revised and rethought about the same topics. Each time I teach it it seems I am peeling off another layer of confusion ... seeing things in a new light. But note if I had tried to go in this much depth back when I was in 2nd year, I would not have done well in my semester ... I would have probably not gotten the chance to pursue higher studies and perhaps never would have gotten the opportunity to explore things in more detail when it really matters. There is a beautiful piece of dialog from the 2007 movie The Great Debaters: We must do the things that we have to do so that we can do the things that we want to do.
in your research area do you work on practical research , i 've seen your website that you have worked on fluid and solid mechanics . does practical experiment do apply on these areas? + why did you chose mechanical engineering as your life
My own work and those of my students are focused on the mathematical modelling side. We do work with experimental collaborators. Choosing Mechanical Engineering can be traced back basically to my performance in IIT JEE and the rank I got coupled with my desire to come to IIT KGP for my UG studies. Plus I was good in Maths and Physics, so it seemed a sensible choice ... but that is true for most of us! :)
Hello sir, I'm 3rd year mechanical student. I've been approached by some of my professors to work on some projects. I have found academics easier but when it comes to project I have no experience whatsoever. I really find it difficult as the current research areas like cfd etc are very much advanced to a different level. How can I do well? Any suggestions would do great help.
Start slowly by consulting ur CFD teacher ( if there is one ) if not approach ur FM or HT professors for it. Let me just warn u CFD is tough it's not easy but the satisfaction of solving a CFD problem is too high. As for practical skills look for innovation labs or some kind of workshops am sure some colleges will have it. If that's also not possible invest in a 3D printer if u can afford one , for mech at least a 3 D printer is a must and u will definitely gain the practical skills u r looking for ( or the confidence of getting into a project ) . Also internships look for some during summer or ur free time.

Sir .. How can I deal with the situation where I am not finding the teaching style suitable for me... ?
Even if you go to the absolute best college in the world, you will still find some teachers whose teaching style will not suit you. So, don't let that influence or original passion for studies. As you yourself pointed out that you did get in touch with some professors whose teaching style you liked. Take that as positive. In keeping with the spirit of this video, if you start doing a project (for instance, with one of those professors you like) you will gain a further impetus to study. Actually, this whole thing you are feeling is very much a part of growing up. At every stage, you will find things which are not to your liking. So you have to adapt and extract the best out of it.
@@Prof_JC thanks a lot for replying one follow up...so should I work with teachers whom I like more...or should I make efforts to understand the teachers whose teaching style is not suiting me....will I miss out something If I only focuses on my liking or interst?
@@litcode702 I think for project work you should try working with teachers with whom you feel a natural level of comfort. However, you must make efforts to understand the teachers whose teaching style you are not finding that much suitable.

Sir, let's say the student get admitted to Computer Science branch. But he/she wants to do research, let's say condensed matter. He/she knows the physics required for that research before coming to college. That person approaches a professor asking to do research in the very first semester. Will the Professor allow? Will the Professor think that the individual can bring inter disciplinary approaches in the research?
I am a MSc Physics student. And belive me, what ever he mentioned is absolutely bullseye. When you dive into research you basically know nothing. Or I must trying something end you get lot or error. And before choosing a project make sure it atleast in the realm of your course, even if it ia completely new it fine. But always welcome the newness or else depression will eat you alive.

And what if it did? The country's economy needs people to have jobs and tier 1 graduates either are creating jobs or are working at high levels, I don't see how a noble prize or two will have a major impact on the country's population, other than ofcourse, bragging about rights
The probability of winning a noble prize is varied narrow, it involves luck. There isn't only a noble prize in the stem. I had worked extremely hard for jee but couldn't get my desired branch in any national institute. But i wish to be associated with any project work / research/internship with IIT during my UG. Please can you guide me on this Sir.
Please apply through the Summer Research Fellowship Programme organised Jointly by the three science academies of India and which leads to internships at the IITs and IISc.
Sir, is this applicable to institutes which have research oriented Undergrad programs like IISc or IISERs or is there any other mechanism in fashion there?
I disagree with whole idea of different path of research for UG students. The only way to do research is first a deep study/survey in the domain of problem of interest is essentially needed. Then learning for all related simulation tools/paper writing tools like tex, graphics editors, graph plotters are needed. Coding they all learn since their schooling rigorously. So what more!!! Yes! one needs to be a voracious reader for plenty of literature available, imaginative problem solver and good clean writing skill. That's it.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. "UG research" is an exposition to research. Proper research work can start at the postgraduate or PhD level. The time available and the base working knowledge at the UG level is much less. This has been my experience during my own UG days as well as in supervising about 3-4 students each year for the past 4-5 years. If you have had a different experience in supervising UG students, please share your practice with the approximate timeline you follow for them.
@@Prof_JC Sir, In the arena of research, there are no classifications like UG/PG/PHD research. Its all about new information or proposal about unknowns/unattempt options. UG students enrolled usually in 3/4 year courses. They are mostly equipped with all necessary fundamental concepts of maths, physics, chemistry and programming nowadays than ever before. Its only up to the instructor how early and how well they can expose the students to a precise and clear doable problem statement within a timeframe. Suitable formulated research problem is already half solved. UG/PG/PHD research should not be differentiated. It will only confuse them. Research should be "ACCURATE & NEW". "accuracy" is less of headache but the most difficult part is "NEW". To establish "Novelty" one needs to go through whole literature whether it is really NEW. Then there is no alternative to HARD WORK for learning all related fundamental concepts and existing ocean of available knowledge, clear understanding and great story telling approach to showcase their research outputs. May be someday we won't even need any research efforts form humans as this task may also be outsourced to some automated problem solver machine that would take all necessary problem inputs and deliver all possible solutions to choose from..... Its the TIME when humans are proving to be redundant. Moreover, UG research is mainly based on Supervisor's research whether he had the right problem to utilize the raw talent of UG students. As instructor is expected to read alot and dig out a super special well stated problem required to be solved.
On your last point, sharing progress, what do you think about sharing "possibly important" progress via email just to make sure your baby is not robbed? Does that happen at the UG level?
I always encourage my studdnts to email me because it helps us to document the progress with time stamps. But if the fear is about getting robbed of one's work, then there is a serious lack of trust in the student-professor relationship, and it would be better if the student works with someone else!
Csir funding - 5000 crore Apple r&d funding - 150000 crore IIT funding average - 500 crore Just give me some sense what research do the faculties do or are MOST of the faculties wasting the tax payers money over some research which has no value and those thesis will lie in the lab for years to come. I think most faculties are overpaid enjoying life with no significant contribution. Who knows I maybe wrong.

@@Prof_JC Thank you very much sir.

@@agastyasrivastava4012 What is your Department? And in which subjects are you referring to when you mentioned proofs?
@@Prof_JC I'm from Electronics and Communication department, but I've inclination towards software engineering. Actually I would like to rephrase my question. Let me put it this way:
My question is about a very fundamental issue, that is, the way we have to absorb information in engineering (both academia and industry).
This is like introducing test match cricket to a group that has always played T20s...:-).
Great analogy!
in your research area do you work on practical research , i 've seen your website that you have worked on fluid and solid mechanics . does practical experiment do apply on these areas? + why did you chose mechanical engineering as your life
My own work and those of my students are focused on the mathematical modelling side. We do work with experimental collaborators. Choosing Mechanical Engineering can be traced back basically to my performance in IIT JEE and the rank I got coupled with my desire to come to IIT KGP for my UG studies. Plus I was good in Maths and Physics, so it seemed a sensible choice ... but that is true for most of us! :)
Could you please talk on ancillary skillsets? On making publications, papers, etc

It is done in the IITs and NITs also as I mention in the video.
Pls do extend mentorship for undergraduate students in my college also..srm Modinagar campus pls 🙏
