- Garbage performing Special on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno on April 2, 1999. This was their second time playing Special on the Tonight Show as they appeared on there earlier on December 11, 1998. This is the full uncut version including the interview.

This is a VERY unique, rare thing playing the same song on the same National broadcast? Doubly so the fact its less than 6 months later? I have NEVER heard of this occurring before (its certainly possible, but this may well be a 1st on Tonight Show history. Anybody?) Does anyone in the know have an explaination for the repeated song? Clearly the grammys just occured, but still, it doesn't warrant repeating the same song IMHO. It's my favorite Garbage song so I don't mind! ;)
Love this version, I have been hunting for a better version for a decade. She is feeling good on this one. If wonder if anyone have money, they may be able to buy a copy of this show from ABC?
@@KNot-Mi-ReelName - - - - - - - This performance is much better on Letterman (search: "Garbage - Special (Live on Letterman)" However this version has a nice interview that isn't on the Letterman version. The audio here is kind of "flat" but is very nice on the Letterman version. Also Shirley is wearing a skirt and the cameraman on Letterman did a great job there. Both performances - here and there - are good though.
I was there taking a tour of the studio that day and got yelled at backstage for touching their equipment. But on the plus side... I GOT TO TOUCH GARBAGE'S EQUIPMENT!

Hey Sam, speaking from experience, its likely they used a VERY subtle autotune on her vocal for the non-word "I-I-I-I-eye" (don't know how to spell it, yes I know she's singing "I") at the beginning of nearly every verse at beginning of song. The reason being that, though she is a remarkably talented singer, this is an extremely difficult type of vocal to pull off alone live. Without the autotune it sounds sorta bland and empty. The band traditionally doesn't use hired backup singers for harmony, live or in studio. Instead, nearly all backup/harmony vocals are sung by shirley in studio and dubbed in). To add some validity to my point, in BOTH Tonite Show performances the band used whats called a 'click track' (pre-recorded instruments or vocals that must be played in time by the live musicians, headphones on drummer is a dead giveaway), notice the female backup vocals that first play at 1:40 in this video. Shirley didn't sing them right? And there are no singers behind or off to the side. Also note they don't even attempt the haunting background 3 part harmony of the outtro of this song, where shirley sings "ahhh ahhh ahhh ahhh", not even on the click track, which is a strange choice IMHO (best part of the song too!)
I respect this live, they aren't relying on any tricks (which autotune is used for; lousy singers without talent, skill, or morals), the band is 'keeping it real' as you guys say. :) All this proves is respect for the audience and the song, Shirley is one of the most talented & respected vocalists ever, and I could never say a bad word about her or the band, this is time honored live music techniques, not the 'hide the complete lack of talent' deception that has become the norm of todays musical jokes. :)

6-13-2020 - - - - Something odd about this song: near the end she sings "I looked for you..." but on the lyrics printed it says: "I feel renewed." It's hard to tell, really. Shirley has been known to alter lyrics during a performance. Particularly at the end of "Vow" sometimes when live. It's all good. The Letterman version of this is better though, but lacks the interview.

A wonderful live version of Milk at the 96 MTV EU awards turned into a 3 day marathon binge of nonstop garbage pretty much all day long. Unhealthy? Nah. I listen to garbage when i ride my bike on a USB speaker. I listen to garbage when i come home and change. I listen to garbage when i go to the shop. Never seen them though.
