Anybody else sitting around and listening to one great '80s song after another? The '80s weren't without their issues, but my God, we had some excellent music!
In 1987, my old high school won a contest to have Wang Chung play a concert there. Some very amazing students were able to turn it into a fundraisier for a student that suffered a brain injury a few weeks before. The band visited the boy in the hospital, and made a big difference in his recovery.
something similar happened my Senior Year of HS , a friend of mine was sitting on the hood of someones car in the school parking lot, and he would not get off of it, so the dumb dingus in the car thought if he started to back the car up really quick, it would get my friend to get off the Hood. unfortunately, my friend fell off and hit his head, and had a serious brain injury. he used to be an "A" average student, but after he recovered , he had the mental capacity of a 8 year old 😥sadly , no bands visited his hospital room tho...
I remembered watching this on MTV and VH1. this should've been an award winning video. The way everything was done. This cannot be replicated. I loved Wang Chung. I'm 65 now and still love it❤❤❤❤

I would like to point out that this was before even the damn VIDEO TOASTER was an option. This was done with scotch tape and an exacto knife. Editing is this person's super power. The only video I can think of that even comes close is the Scissor Sisters "I Don't Feel Like Dancing".
I'm a radio host on my village internet radio station playing nothing but 80's music and I can absolutely assure you this one gets played often on my show.
I agree 100% My life from 1981 until 1988 was beyond magical. Even though I lived in a small town in PA, the social scene was perfect. Great friends, great music, awesome parties and it all seemed like I was somehow caught up as a character in a movie. Each weekend I would say that there is no possible way this one could be better than the previous? Well, it was, and it kept building until it finally hit a crescendo in late 1988 when I realized I had to move on with my life (I also met this girl, she really was different than all the others, and then................true adulthood hit me like a brick wall?) I know that to dwell in the past is a bad idea but if I could find a way to go back for even a week? No stress, hardly any obligations other than my job and just living in a dream and being on top of the world?
For real, this was pre digital. Pretty sure this had to be spliced together physically. Maybe they had a splitter though. Regardless, 1000x harder than today.
I would hate to edit this even in digital, I imagine they used a switcher and had several video players going into the switcher at once and would flip the buttons on it. They still would have to go back and edit in material.
I believe the proper form is "wanging chung", where "wang" is the verb and "chung" is the direct object. Now, if these two words appear in the opposite order or not directly next to each other in the sentence, all bets are off. The Latin rules prevail, and you must determine the meaning of each word in relation to each other word, and by the time you've done that your language and civilization have died, and THEN where are you. Best to just *wang* that *chung* and leave well enough alone.
I agree that I think it's just the seizure-inducing video for people who didn't even know they were sensitive. I love the song, but it got to a point wherein the video was completely unwatchable. That's why I'm now in the comments! ;)
It's directed by the genius duo of Godley and creme and those guys totally took video production in totally strange and bizarre directions starting with the stunning 1981 visage classic fade to Grey

What I did, is stand in the same spot for 2 takes of me saying a line and then cut rapidly between them. Then you'll see me and my gizmo flashing around in one corner and I'm on drums in the other corner and my cat comes and goes rapidly
The landlord in our office building is named Chung. When we were in the process of negotiating the lease, "Is his first name Wang?" was an FAQ. It's bad enough we sing this at the first of the month when the rent's due...
In '87 for my high school graduation, they performed at Walt Disney World in Orlando, FL for Grad Night - it was a lot of fun watching them do this hit song live.

There were others smaller acts like "someday" by Glass Tiger and a few others, but Wang Chung was the biggest band there that late night (it was after the park closed only for students across the state)- it was a lot of fun.

Unfortunately, one bad memory were some drunk students from Miami. They jumped out of "It's A Small World" ride and broke some of the figurines. As a result, when it reopened later in the evening they had people on "deck" on many of the rides, which ruined the effect to ensure more drunk students would not damage more of the rides. I have no idea if they still do it today or had to give it up sponsoring this night because of misbehaving senior graduates.
Great tune, great bass line, great horn section. Hard to imagine a more danceable song. Fantastic memory of the 80's. I always wanted to Wang Chung, just once, but this damn near gave me seizures when I watched it.

1979. I was a freshman in HS. Heard this song and was HOOKED. Was so heavily into Gary, that I saved to buy myself a mini- Moog and taught myself to play synth keyboard. Still playing today. I always wondered when that sentiment began, like did someone that grew up in the 20s think swing music was the best ever? That's pretty much the beginning of recorded popular music. Yeah it's about 100 years now. That's all the way back when there were only 2 radio stations, one for music and one for news.
I'm a Gen Z, and I find this more listenable than the descent into Hell that is TikTok. VERY toxic platform with very predictable music. While the general treatment of women was still a work in progress in the '80s, the artists in that decade were at least creative. MTV was also more like teamwork than a tiring platform.

They probably used the 1984 tour to preview material they were working on, to gauge the reaction, and to give the audience something they weren't expecting. I don't blame them. When you open for a band like The Cars, you've got to pull out all the stops to get the crowd to remember you after its over. What was it like when you all heard this in 1984? Because this sure ain't Dance Hall Days, which was their big single at the time.

I might not have grown up in this era, but my parents had me grow up with the music, and now that I’m older, I can really appreciate how good these songs were. Love this one. Especially the short shift after the second chorus, definitely my favorite part

I think my favorite part of this band is how happy and fun everyone sounds, then you watch the music video and the happy singing man, Jack Hues, looks like he's going to tear your heart out of your chest. The absolute death glare the entire time.

I always wondered when that sentiment began, like did someone that grew up in the 20s think swing music was the best ever? That's pretty much the beginning of recorded popular music. Yeah it's about 100 years now. That's all the way back when there were only 2 radio stations, one for music and one for news.
I'm a Gen Z, and I find this more listenable than the descent into Hell that is TikTok. VERY toxic platform with very predictable music. While the general treatment of women was still a work in progress in the '80s, the artists in that decade were at least creative. MTV was also more like teamwork than a tiring platform.

you know everybody is going to say the time period they grew up with was fun... its literally you being young and just having new experiences ..nothing new about that with later generations you still are able to experience previous generation songs ..you tend to have a bigger library to experience really. i was born end of 80's myself but grew up in the 90's
Each time this song was played my nephew, age three, would shriek, "Everybody have fun tonight!" at the top of his lungs; the novelty wore-off quickly.
It is as if the entire history of pop music was leading to this single in 1986. It was glorious, and will likely never be repeated in our lifetimes.
I know it says 86, but I saw them in 1984 open for The Cars, and they sang this song. Not sure how/why they put 1986..
Man, if only I had been there, @@gc4644 . The reason it's 1986 is that was the year that the single was officially released, as the lead single for the Mosaic studio album. They probably used the 1984 tour to preview material they were working on, to gauge the reaction, and to give the audience something they weren't expecting. I don't blame them. When you open for a band like The Cars, you've got to pull out all the stops to get the crowd to remember you after its over. What was it like when you all heard this in 1984? Because this sure ain't Dance Hall Days, which was their big single at the time.

Brilliant band never fully appreciated for their genius. Incredible editing to boot... In so many ways this band represents the apex of 80's pop.
The local radio station in my area plays this on heavy rotation, and I don't blame them. The 1980's was truly the best era for music.

I think my favorite part of this band is how happy and fun everyone sounds, then you watch the music video and the happy singing man, Jack Hues, looks like he's going to tear your heart out of your chest. The absolute death glare the entire time.
