    Hey, everyone! There always seems to be something a few folks find wrong with the build even after we've fixed the primary issue. In this case, his top fans were set to intake. I'd normally swap these around, but he'd end up with more exhaust fans than intakes = negative internal case pressure = dust influx from PCIe slot cover area (ask me how I know). The top of this case has a dust filter as well, so I left things as is. And the "heat rises so that's inefficient" argument goes out the window the moment you introduce any sort of active cooling component. Hope this clears it up. Not the end of the world either way, but not something I was willing to change in the moment 👍

    • @killertruth186
      @killertruth186 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yeah, dust filters on the top obviously show the case was designed to have more intake fans than exhaust fans.

    • @qT_p13
      @qT_p13 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I wouldn't call it wrong, just unconventional. A pc case with fans is more of a vacuum pressure system so the "heat rises" argument doesn't apply at all. Its all good either way honestly, positive pressure, negative...and maybe the owner wants it this way intentionally who knows.

    • @chadsmusiccreations
      @chadsmusiccreations 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I love this pinned post! Positive pressure is the way to go,. either by amount of fans, or by judging or using math on cfm so that you obtain a positive pressure in the case. Without positive pressure you end up making a vacuum and it will suck dust in from every little opening that is not filtered with a dust filter. I have not had to really tear down and clean my pc in what feels like forever because of doing a positive pressure type setup. I just watched this video and love these video series that your doing. You are helping a ton of people who might not be able to afford to get it fixed, and then they can in turn watch these videos and learn how to fix their own pc's in the future. Keep up the great work!

    Things I've learned in your channel lately since watching the series. When there's no display output, one of the many things could be the problem... A) It could be the bios, which is not updated to properly work with the current cpu and gpu. B) Ram may not have been put in properly. C) Could be the power supply. D) CPU socket/issue and whatnot. E) The GPU itself. F) And finally the motherboard itself. I think I'm getting better at diagnosing the problem and all thanks to this wonderful channel :)

    It's good to note that PC Part Picker will notify you if there are potential bios complications. Good stuff Greg, I was wondering how easy it was to rectify this problem, I actually went with a 10600k, mostly because this issue kept showing up with the parts I wanted to get in an AMD build.

    • @Josiuh
      @Josiuh 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That message on PCPP is a generic message that shows up whenever there MIGHT be an issue...therefore you still have to do your own research because PCPP's generic message will be inaccurate at times

    • @Lukecase2
      @Lukecase2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      the incompatibility message popped up when I built my pc on PCPP but it was a false message. I was glad to see it though because that let me learn a little more about PCs from the research I did.

    • @Josiuh
      @Josiuh 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Lukecase2 something PCPP doesn't do which they absolutely MUST (granted it can't happen over night) is providing a warning when someone picks a part that has faster lane capability than the MB they choose....for example, when someone chooses a Gen 4 SSD even though the board selected only supports up to Gen 3

    • @limecheesecake1832
      @limecheesecake1832 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sometimes PCPP does spit out false positive "incompatibility" issues though, so it's usually best if you don't know, is to go online (like Reddit, a Discord server, or a forum) and talk to someone with more knowledge than you (but make sure you get a second opinion) like I did when I first started.

  • @calvinweese
    @calvinweese 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    As someone who has that exact GPU, this breaks my soul that it was so easy to fix. I have to wonder if the original person who built it, actually picked out these parts, themselves, otherwise this shouldn't have been overlooked. Things like this tend to happen when people throw things together without properly doing research, which, for me, comes down to every single last component that goes into my system builds.

    • @raul0ca
      @raul0ca 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      At least Greg is free. I also watch Adamant IT, who runs a PC repair/build service, and he most definitely is not free.
      When I built my current system with a Ryzen 5700G I didn't know I needed to update the BIOS before it would work. I thought it was a sketchy power supply or my questionable ASRock motherboard.

    • @raul0ca

      Not every motherboard has the BIOS flashback function. Only higher end/recent motherboards can do this. Check the online manual before you buy

    • @hedonistic_mushroom
      @hedonistic_mushroom 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bios flashing is a godsend now. I know it's one of those things that, if you know what you're doing, you won't ever need it. But the PC building space is attracting more and more people (majority of which are coming into this not knowing much either), Flashing a BIOS needs to be one of those ubiquitous features that really should come with boards above the budget tiers.
      The stupid thing is each manufacturer implements it differently, the procedures aren't always fully documented (looking at you Gigabyte).

    Well, I recognized the P-500A case immediately since that's what my system is in and mine is pretty similar in specs. Considering how easy that case makes cable management, I get the feeling the owner didn't really even try. Also that case is missing the two lower cable cover slides. I'm glad they will actually get to use this now.

Note: pc was so old that plastic parts were brittle and breaking and lots of dust. i didnt do a DEEP clean but i did a general dusting, cleaned contacts with IPA, repasted CPU and checked all connections. I actually have a similar issue with a PC I bought secondhand. Turns on, fans turn on, doesn’t post.
    I’m kinda excited/hopeful that this might be the issue. And yes, just like your viewer, mine has been a paperweight for a while as well 😅
    Anyway, great video as always! 👍

    I've migrated from an Intel Ivy Bridge platform to a Zen+ platform using the same installation. After the 3rd time of shutting it down and starting it back up, the whole bootloader got corrupted and it was apparently caused by an "unexpected" shutdown according to logs, had no other choice but to start from scratch. Anyways, great video, Greg!

    I've built a few similar PC's recently in Phanteks cases (P400a/P300). They are definitely tricky to cable manage with the looped wires and shorter than desired cables.
    Awesome build. I'm running a similar setup currently with a Ryzen 7 5800X. Any decent $40 CPU Cooler like my Cooler Master Hyper 212 Black will prevent thermal throttling. I get to 85C in synthetic 100% applications like Cinebench R23. During gaming, it's between 65C-80C. I suspect this viewers PC may thermal throttle during gaming with the current CPU cooler.

    Wonderful job bro! I have my IT certifications and I’ve been wondering for a long time whether I should start a TH-cam channel as a hobby and as entertainment and way of teaching for other folks! I got new parts coming in and I think I’ll film it all!!!

    In general i do like this series. But sadly quite a lot "broken PCs" come down to a bios that does not support the installed cpu.
    It happens so often, that my head always goes "amd cpu + no post? wrong bios!"
    But at least i learned something, so i can help my friends and family when they have this kind of problems (and of course others :P).
    Thanks for this series, Greg!

    Great stuff Greg, I have a feeling he was willing to wait so long because he didn't want to turn his nice hardware over to just anyone to do some troubleshooting. You were able to get everything running and clean it up nicely, I'm sure he'll be super excited!

    I love this series! I have learned a lot from it already, thank you Greg! I have a piece of advice for the people who are unsure whether to build a PC themselves or buy a pre-built one: my PC is a prebuilt, it was built by a company like CyberpowerPCs, I don't want to say they are all bad, but I regret not building my PC myself, I could then buy a nicer case for example. Flaws like: Single channel memory, the sidepanel bulging with cables, surely a company that builds PCs every day should know how to manage cables, but to the point. Two days ago I completely rebuilt it. I bought a new case, AIO, and some RAM (dual channel configuration xD) and it's fun! As long as you don't do anything stupid, nothing will go wrong. PC parts are actually pretty sturdy, but that doesn't mean you can do anything with them, just be careful and have some confidence in yourself. Organize it and make a checklist: 'Did I put the IO shield in?' 'Are the standoffs placed properly?' Trust me, just do it!
    Greg, thanks for this series!
    Greetings!

    I'm honestly surprised that motherboard manufacturers haven't started baking in rudimentary network drivers into the bios so you can just press a button on the board (maybe bios flashback) to make it fetch the most up to date bios revision.
    At least in the more expensive models.

    That CPU cooler is a bit weak for a 5800X, but man, this is a super powerful rig to just leave sitting... I would never have left it alone like that for so long. I already looked into the BIOS flashback and updating the BIOS before I even bought a single piece of hardware, so my rig worked no problem.
    It's good that his problem was just an easy BIOS update, and that his board is so nice that the process was easy.

      That's what was so shocking to me. To have a build that powerful sitting in dust when the solution was pretty obvious. The motherboard even had the flashback option as well. I guess some people have other things going on in life

    That 5800x could definitely benefit from a better cooler than the stock AMD cooler. I can't believe that the system has sat for over a year when all it needed was a very simple BIOS flash!
    As for the OS transfer, you can remove old drivers through device manager using an unhide option via command prompt. It will show ALL devices ever installed and I did just that to upgrade from my i7 4790k to a 3700x build. The OS had zero issues with compatibility and I had no blue screens at all.

    Reminds me of my first build in a way. All new parts, I7 4790, MSI Z97 PC Mate motherboard, I used my gtx 745 from my alienware for about a year until I got a 1070 sea hawk, And a thermal take PSU I got from best buy. I was using it to watch youtube, Sorta leaning back in my chair, And it turned off.... Never turned back on... It died in like 2017.

    One thing you could also do if you dont have an older cpu laying around is google how to reflash bios on your specific motherboard and use your keyboard flying blind. Just a thought and way more accessible than buying an older cpu.

    The instant you mentioned a 5800x and "over a year" made my mind go right to BIOS versions. I'd prepared a usb drive for that eventuality on my 5800x build, but it booted fine first try.
    Also, I'd like to see how that AMD cooler performs on a 5800x. I have a Hyper 212 dual fan cooler but I think I skimped on thermal paste slightly too much. It runs hot on bench tests but does fine in gaming. I think I'll repaste when I clean the pc and install the extra fans and m.2 ssd I got recently.

    The thing with the EVGA cards is routing the power cables from the bottom looks a bit ugly since they block the light bar. They should be routed from above or to the side of the GPU.

    Right from the explanation of the first symptoms I was on the bios because... I got the same issue. I was a bit on an edge case, I bought a 5600X with a X470 I knew would work. I asked the shop I bought it from to perform a bios update (that they charged 25 Euros for) and they didn't do the latest BIOS. So I had to contact AMD to get the Athlon update kit as my mono doesn't have bios flashback buttons :D Anyway, glad this awesome machine is back into operation, that's a damn good computer.
