      your "backwards" fan setup made sense fwiw the front is a restriction and having it as an intake; the dust would have collected up in the grate and suffocated the system of fresh air over time. that fan setup was best case as it was. as the exhaust, you'd never have to worry about that becoming restricted with dust. fans will always suck in dust, that's life

    Considering the Intel to AMD platform swap, perhaps the viewer was used to plugging the video cable into the motherboard instead of plugging it into the GPU? That would explain the "no post / no video". Honest mistake that a lot of people have done when switching from having an iGPU to no iGPU

      More then likely, the culprit is probably his monitors backlight burnt out or his monitor died. His computer worked fine for a bit then all of a sudden it doesn't and won't boot. But since it booted right up here, its very likely the monitor or maybe he was using a faulty display/hdmi cable. Either way, it would appear to him as a computer no boot when in fact the computer was working fine, he just doesn't have a monitor anymore.
      I would also like to point out that the owner claimed it happened after a crash. But a "crash" can be interpreted as different things by different people. Something as simple as a power surge followed by a brownout could cause his computer to reboot and may be considered a crash by him. His computer survived, but it may have killed his monitor. It would explain why he thought his computer was the problem. If he didn't have a light on or other external stimuli to indicate a power flicker, it wouldn't have even looked like a power out and would appear to just be a computer crash. Just a possibility.

      I suspect bad/weak extension may have been my issue, a few months ago i installed a kill-a-watt at my outlet because I wanted to give mining a try (ive since given up on it) and it was blocking the outlet for my monitor so i installed an extension between the outlet and kill-a-watt so i could plug in the monitor. After some time, i kept getting random reboots. and it was inconsistent. it would work for a few days, and then either restart or just wouldnt boot/post. I swapped the PSU and PSU cables, MOBO and RAM, those didnt fix it. I just recently removed the extension and kill-a-watt and so far its been good.

    In my experience Win10 is rock solid when it comes to hardware swaps. For context, I've run the same Win10 for over 6 years, swapped 3 cpus and mobos, at least half a dozen video cards, and I never did a fresh install and it always worked perfectly. The latest swap was a 7700K to a 5600X (with new mobo of course) and Win10 didn't care, it booted up and ran flawlessly for a whole year. (It finally died when I tried an upgrade from ye olde bloated Win10 to the new Win11, it didn't like that at all... so a brand new fresh Windoze for the first time in 6 years). I also did an i5-8600 to an old Atom N*something (single core with HT) and Win10 still didn't care.

    Well, you know your Hardware, but Software is another thing. Updating drivers CAN fix Issues, but also introduce some. Reinstalling Windows can break registrations, leading to reinstalling many thing or even losing Data. For example If you format your Bootdrive for the reinstall, you can lose Bookmarks, Passwords or Savegames (if they arent in the Cloud).
    Yes Windows-Setup brings the option to "Update" or installing while keeping files. But that also keeps broken registrations, if those do make problems.
    And before asking Questions, I do build PCs by myself and i'm the "Techie" in the Family. My first PC Build was 17 years ago. And i used PCs even before that. Do YOU know Floppy Discs? XD

    You have to uninstall all MOBO related software and drivers before the swap and you're good to go.

    Having two windows install drives connected at the same time will likely break both. I ran into this problem when I cloned my dads HDD to SSD and then put the HDD back in the system to use as a secondary drive. I didn't clean the disk properly and so it still had the boot information on the HDD. I had to manually repair the boot sector/files on the SSD after using fdisk to clean the HDD.

    It's always best to start with a fresh install, but switching platforms without reinstalling doesn't cause as many problems as it used to. Windows 10 is very resilient when figuring out the new hardware and installing the required drivers accordingly. There may be a performance hit, but that's the same when comparing any old Windows install to a fresh install, even if you haven't changed platform. I usually just run cleaner utilities (CCleaner, DDU etc.) after swapping, to wipe the old drivers and registry entries, and then it's good to go.

    • @josephpalmer5997
      @josephpalmer5997 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Completely agree here. Pretty much since Windows 7, you can transplant a boot drive in any platform and it will usually work just fine. It may have some errors but as ReD DeV points out, you can run utilities to clean it. OR do the next best thing and grab the drivers from the motherboard download and run the uninstallers with those drivers. As long as you do some proper clean-up, it's not hard to do or even remotely unsafe.

    • @GregSalazar
      @GregSalazar  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Said this in a few other comments, but plenty of folks _have_ experienced issues after migrating boot drives from Intel to AMD and vice/versa on Windows 10. I've even run into it myself - which is why the safe recommendation is to start fresh. Keep sensitive files and games on a standalone HDD or something and it saves reinstall time as well.

    • @seshpenguin
      @seshpenguin 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, Microsoft did a decent job trying to make Windows, which internally is kinda a mess, more resilient. But in general, it's probably not a bad idea if you have had the Windows install going for a while to just reinstall anyway. Windows tends to accumulate "cruft", whether its weird settings inconsistencies or just random software you installed over time (especially if some drivers or software with kernel modules don't handle platform swaps as well. I know anti-cheats can complain if you change a major part of a system).

    fwiw I've moved SSD between old intel systems and newer, as well as crossover to AMD Ryzen. no issues.
    my main system has gone from c2d, to c2q, to i5 3gen then 4th gen then ryzen 1st gen. no issues.
    yeah win7 was hit and miss on this but win10 handles it much better.
    maybe there might be a performance hit because of old drivers lingering but afaik they shouldn't even be loaded if the hardware they were for is missing. noting I've even noticed, at least.

    • @tbuksuperfly
      @tbuksuperfly 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Was going to say the same thing. Previous versions of windows may cause problems, sure, but win10+ I've had no problems swapping entire platforms on existing installs. Not to say it 'can't' cause a problem, but it's unlikely. Presuming you will have issues is a bit disingenuous.

      I don’t own a pc repair business, but I do work a job in the hardware repair industry that does include PCs sometimes. My best advice is to have a good understanding of how to deal with customers. Not every customer is going to know how to explain problems and there are some who will be downright rude, mean, or just difficult to deal with. Just be prepared for that. It would be your business so at the end of the day you can deal with them how you want. Personally I try to remember that the problem isn’t always “solved” just because you say it is solved. It is often solved when the customer feels comfortable that it actually is. We don’t always fix machines, we sometimes fix people to!

    A lot of these new cases these days are more form over function. I removed the clear plastic screen from the front of my case, and modded up a fly screen cover to replace it. Temps dropped by around 12-15 deg c on both my CPU & GPU. Airflow is king when it comes to cooling.
    Keep the great video's coming.

      i have a thermaltake s300tg snow, its like the step up version of this case. its a case focused on noise, and with very very good thermals. its made out of some sort of steel, very heavy with really tight tolerances, and with filtered intakes. i am not using fans on the front, but i do have side intakes next to my mobo. if i ever needed more airflow than i already have, i would put bigger fans, like 140 mm perhaps, on silent mode, but it dont think its very necessary.
      At least the s300tg seems quite functional. i have a feeling this thermaltake case here is more budget oriented while still keeping some premium quality to it.

In fact, I use a dual monitor setup with Display port and every so many months have to actually disconnect the Display port cables from the back of the monitors and put it back in again because the computer loses communication with the monitor.

    Just so people know, with windows 10 (probably won't work with windows 11 or if you have your drive encrypted) It's handy to have a Linux live USB so that you can connect a windows drive and boot into Linux so that you can pull your files off a drive you don't want to boot and transfer them to a drive you can use to put them on your new install. If you have a problem with your windows installation and you are somewhat handy with computers it can be pretty handy to troubleshoot as well.

    I had an ssd is used for pc building with amd and intel and drivers for both nvidia and amd gpus that never gave me issues surprisingly. I will say its not as important but some may experience issues tranfering a drive from a previous build if it used an older motherboard. Some use different bios compared to modern uefi which changes how the boot drive gets configured when installing windows.
