Cory, life's been full of surprises here, and I haven't been able to interact as much as I used to.... Doesn't mean I haven't been watching, learning and ordering.
Please extend a thank you to Candi for her help on the last order, in fact.
So wonderful to hear you re-emphasizing what John Kempf and Dr Thomas Dykstra have been saying:
"Bugs won't *and can't* eat healthy plants!"
Shrimp and snails are considered "bugs" in the aquarium horticulture hobby (along with scuds and a host of other micro-organisms that are a part of a healthy ecosystem that new aquarists keep trying to eradicate because they heard "bug" and equate with "bad"). They will not attack healthy plants unless they are literally starving, and have already eaten all the microflora (bacteria as well as algae). So it was wonderful to hear you push back on the 'prevailing wisdom' that [erroneously] says snails eat plants @03:15
As for the potential identification of the scuds @10:20, there's a lot of re-arranging happening with genetic testing now more widely available and therefore being applied across genera. Up until 2019, all freshwater amphipods were placed under the Gammaridea suborder. Genetic tests indicated a genetically different suborder of freshwater amphipods, tentatively labeled Senticaudata. If you want to know which you have, Charles Clapsaddles' DiL is another nerm and doing the genetic testing. I was looking to see if she has a paper out yet, I didn't find anything.... yet.
For anyone wondering how much difference feeding makes in plant growth, my health and life's emergencies have decreased feedings to every few weeks around here (no animals are starving, each drop of water is thriving with microfauna and fish & shrimps continue to multiply) but my plants deteriorated even with the regular use of Easy Green products. It requires tripling my Easy Green to offset skipping feeding dried foods, to offset the loss/consumption of macro and micro nutrients. When we feed our tanks, we really are feeding entire ecosystems!!!
One tip that might need to be added to the Easy Fry food: increase aeration!
While the Easy Fry food is definitely my go-to now (feeds shrimp, fish, and microfauna beautifully!) it is higher in protein and fats (perfect for fry, and perfect for successful breeding in cooler water systems to meet energy requirements) and can generate a film on the water of Walstad inspired systems that don't have aeration that further reduces oxygen levels in the water. I've seen a couple of reviews complaining about the film, I wanted to clarify for anyone reading that the film is actually beneficial, and feeds our microfauna as long as we add aeration so nobody suffocates.
      Again, thank you!

While I do love my fluval3s and the way I have them programmed - I have them on 3 tanks. These lights are a slam dunk for anyone with a fish room or a need to cover a lot of tanks easily, especially with a wifi timer.

I'm excited for this new light!
Can it be over open water or would I need to get a clear hood? I run a few of my tanks open top.
Update: "highly water resistant" thanks Corey. You just answered my question lol.

I love this video format! I watch the old Daily Dose videos multiple times because I pick up a new little tidbit each time, and I'll definitely add this one to that list. It's really helpful to see you narrating tasks in real time because you drop little knowledge bombs in the natural course of conversation. It would be cool to see videos like this from other members of the Coop crew.

These are my favorite videos. Not just talking about how to do things or how YOU do things, but taking us along and showing us how. I get lazy with my tanks once in a while so seeing other people spruce theirs up really encourages me to do the same

Long time watcher, I really appreciate this format much more and don't mind the longer video at all. It's enjoyable to sit down with breakfast and watch what's going on in the fish room! I don't think anything was lost in your different style of filming, if anything it feels more like we are connected to you.

Videos like this and fish room tours are my favorite video formats. I love watching as you're doing things in your fish room working in the tanks, lots of little bits of knowledge to pick up, I'll watch these several times. I can't wait for the lights to come out, want to get a 48" one for a 75 gallon I'm going to be rescaping this winter.

Native Cory in his natural habitat always fun. Looking forward to seeing more.

Hey Cory I have a suggestion. You mentioned not having enough room for maintenance in your fish room. You should make you a rolling maintenance cart to fit your needs and make the top an adjustable counter. Doesn’t have to be something huge just so you can put what you need to keep from having to run back and forth and give you a wider work area. I’ve been watching you for some time now and love your easy green products. Can’t wait to check out the light. 😊

This video is AMAZING! I recently posted on the forum about my dream of having a crypt forest. I’m gonna be selfish for a minute and say this video is for me 😂. Thanks, Cory!!! I’m gonna do it this way. In my experimentation, the crypts definitely melt less if I stick them in the tank in their pots instead of de-potting immediately. I’m so excited to see this tank evolve. Also, I LOVE those tiger shrimp. They’re so beautiful. I agree with you - I’m also about observing nature over the long term.

This video came at the perfect time for me. I'm getting a bunch of crypts and swords soon and will try your potted planting method. H. formosa are my favorite species of fish! Mine swarm the front of the tank whenever I sit down to view them. That kind of behavior just melts my heart. ❤️

I love those shrimp, they are beautiful and different looking, I look forward to the progress of the crypt garden over time, it's nice to see something "real" and not just produced for youtube, it helps us understand what we could probably expect to be able to do ourselves, realistically.

Such a good video Cory! Reminds me of some of your old school content which were pretty much simple and straight to the point with good information. Regarding the new light, congrats on that! I'm stuck with the Fluval Aquasky LED lights that I bought many years ago. So glad that you "get it." With my current lights it puts me in an awkward position when I'm traveling overseas and when the power is out/glitches it leaves my tank without lights until I return. All the bells and whistles with its "sunset/dawn" mode, lightning, color selection I learned was irrelevant and nobody (including the fish or plants) cares or needs to see them. What my system needs is a stronger PAR light for plants (or the ability to have it that strong). Although, I also learned that low light often means low maintenance. Any ways, when and if my lights stop working I'm definitely going to purchase your new LEDs.

Having a app is nice since you can put a timer on it without needing to buy a Wi-Fi timer which would need a app anyways. Also I don't know if these lights can grow high tech plants so I'm going to wait but if they can I will 100% be buying these for any future replacements. They are much cheaper than the Fluval 3.0 planted light I have on my 75g.

I like to use a extenal diatom filter to clear water after working on a tank like this, it clears the water to crystal in twenty four hours. I removes the very fine particles. However some of the scuds you have in the tank may get sucked in. I got use to using it when working in a fish store we had our tanks link together by rows so when we did a gravel clean it would cloud the tank, so we would put the return at one end of the row of ten 10 gallon tanks and the out put at the other. We would start the cleaning at the end on day with the diatom filter running alright the next day when we opened up the tanks would be very clear. We would let it run until closing move filter to next row and repeat the process because we did it every day every two weeks at the end we would start with the first row again. Thus the tanks had a thorough clean every two weeks upon on diatom filter. It also helps to remove free floating algae when you clean the algae from the glass or brushing off the algae from the wood, rocks or ornaments.
And very effect if you go on a vacation and you come home and the tank takes on green water color, which is free floating algae. Also if you get fine particles free floating in the water a diatom filter removes completely clears the water.
Like the aquarium light simple functional and is a well thought out aquarium light for a reasonable light.
With multi levels of brightness and a couple of modes. Thank goodness a long cord. Add the Kasa timer and it a complete setup. Like the fact it is adjustable lenght to fit a tank upgrade. I find the shawdows on the edges not only create mystery but a place fish can use to hide in id the shadows one a place to get out of the direct light but also for ambush of prey. I went to Aquarium Co-op web page to look for it, and found all sizes of the lights were sold out or was out of stock. May not yet in stock so will check back in a couple of weeks as you did say it may or not be available at the time of filming. Great design.

I don't comment often but these recent videos have been killer!
Somethings I've been wondering about lately have been "easy" community breeding videos (single tank, multiple species), and hydroponic growing (balancing fish, food, nutrients, lighting) but with like a monstera (sp?) plant or pothos...
Just errant thoughts that have my ADHD brain going "ooh, what about this? Or this? Or this?" Because I am SO stoked I found this hobby. I'm new to it - only like a year in.

I read that that yellow packing stuff that's around the roots can mess with the gills on the fish or something?

Enjoyed the video. I look for the longer videos like this. Thanks for keeping the average Joe in mind when shaping and releasing your products. Sometimes I'll watch a scaping video and the guy just spent about a thousand bucks. PS your light is on my Christmas list!

Yeah, it’s kinda a pet peeve of mine. Most videos use like $500 in plants to get instant good looking tank for a video. As a hobbyist it doesn’t make sense to do this.

Those Aquarium Co-Op algae scrubbers were really something! Definitely try them out. I didn’t expect to enjoy them as much as I did.

Also love this format. On part showing your light. I hate I just bought another brand but it has built in timer function. Other then that seems similar. Maybe something you can add? Just a thought. It has 6 10 and 12 hr settings.
    Love everything you do! Ty!
Ps I normally listen to you podcast.

Great job in keeping it simple for “normal” fish keepers. Some stuff looks awesome but doesn’t always help the people 😁

Cory is the only one who I can enjoy watching planting - compared to all the other narcissistic aquascape TH-camrs whom I can’t stand watching!
Keep up the good work Cory and all the others on @Aquarium Co-Op!❤❤❤🐠🐟 Much love from Sweden!🤗🤗

Long form fish room updates are the easiest for you to do AND it's the preferred format for us fish nerds 🤓 just like the good ole day's.

    • @AquariumCoop
      @AquariumCoop  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I wouldn't say they're the easiest, not the hardest, but a video like this is 8-10 hours. Gotta plan, pick up supplies. Do the build which can take hours. Then there is follow up with some filming later. But they can be fun, I guess I just want people to realize it's a solid work day to make a video like this.

@@AquariumCoop i only made that comment because you said in this video that this format was the easiest for you. I guess it's just that I'm coming from the perspective of the videos i miss are the "hanging out in the fish room with you, no matter the project big or small" and you are coming at it from "what can i teach". For me personally the video that is just you picking up a camera and taking us along with minimum editing, planning is the most interesting to watch.

Daily dose flashbacks....LOL! It takes forever but I cut the pot off of the rock wool (doesn't damage the roots), open the wool slightly and stick in a root tab, and then I put the plant in the substrate. Your way is definitely quicker but I don't want the pot in the way. Thanks for all of the tips along the way.

Yup, I’ll show my way some more in a future tank. It makes more “sense” with carpeting plants.
