‎ It's clean up time for Cory's urban fish farm! Duckweed has taken over most of the plastic totes and even the 800-gallon tank. But on the plus side, many baby fish have appeared because of the added cover. Elmer the fly river turtle is doing great and just got some new tank mates. Join Cory as he goes on a tank cleaning marathon.

I definitely enjoyed a throwback to your earlier videos of "this is how it looks" behind the scenes. I also hate it when you spend hours working on a project and turn around and jt doesn't look like it. I just call that the "You have got to be kidding me" phase of the project.

This was so great to see. Seeing clean, efficient fish rooms and pristine tanks on TH-cam sometimes gets a little discouraging when I look around and see buckets and algae taking over my home. As always, I really appreciate your transparency.
I'm so envious of your duckweed! I can't grow it fast enough to keep my goldfish happy; I had to beg some from our club members.

  • @ItsLaurenE

I have a huge appreciation for any hobbyist showing the "yes I'm human too" version of themselves. I find yourself and others i follow to be very helpful, honest, and transparent.
I agree with another commenter- it's nice to see a less pristine presentation now and then. I've had friends tell me my tanks are incredibly clean, it's thanks to people like you that have taught me so much and I've found a way that usually works for me. I definitely have my moments of My life taking over and can see when I've been neglecting my tanks.

Hiya Cory! It has been a while, but I wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed this video. Transparency is (sadly) such a rare commodity these days, so whenever you pull the curtains aside and show us that we aren't the only ones with duckweed, BBA, and other issues, it is encouraging and a reminder to all that even the pros have tank issues.
The pressure to only produce highly polished and perfect content can actually be a detriment - especially to newer hobbyists who then develop unreal expectations and get discouraged and quit when algae or other common issues happen in their new tanks. To me, the only filter that should apply in this hobby is the one in your tank...
Incidentally, I just did some restock purchases from you and as always, everything is top-notch. Thank you for always keeping things real and down-to-earth. Looking forward to the next behind the curtains hangout video.

It’s easy to see why people only put the best on the internet. Compliments feel great. People tearing you down doesn’t.
However my main goal is still growing the hobby, engaging in real hobby activities promotes this and helps people have realistic goals.
It’s easier to spend money and make a great looking video. However it’s just not relatable for most people. A lot of creators can spend $500 a video on plants, fish, and hard scape. Hobbyists can do this also, but only at the beginning of a tank. So often times only the first quarter of a game is shown on TH-cam because it’s the easiest one.

After getting back into the hobby this year, things have definitely changed. TH-cam is a big game changer. Watching this particular video was fantastic. I try to keep everything neat and clean, but life can get in the way. Although my water parameters are usually spot on, a little algae here and a little there tends to detract from my tanks as displays in my living room. Glad to see others have the same issues. People talk about maintenance and general clean up being an ongoing issue but actually showing viewers was brilliant...I don't have to worry that I'm the only one anymore. Definitely got me into the tanks today for more than water changes. Cleaned up glass, lids, filters, and moved all the decor around in 14 gallon Betta tank so he doesn't get bored with same ole same ole. 75 is laid out exactly like I want. Easy maintenance is just that, easy. Other things tend to get pushed back a little longer than they should. I actually enjoyed the upkeep session as it was relaxing and you get to immediately see a difference your efforts make. Thanks for the nudge and keep up the videos. Really enjoyed the behind the scene look at warehouse with shipping prices, plants, employees, costs, postal, processes, etc. Then again I really enjoy species profiles, plant highlights, product reviews, live chats, tours, and of course DEAN. Have a great day!

  • @seeing8spots
    @seeing8spots ปีที่แล้ว +2

Honestly I really enjoyed this "real" aquarium keeping type video. All of us get busy, sick, overwhelmed etc at times and the tanks get behind on maintence. It's nice to see a professional acknowledge it!
It also nice to hear you acknowledge that you need to downsize so you can enjoy the hobby more; I think a lot of people think more is better and it's not always the case. It's why our hard limit is 4 tanks actually (two 10gal, a 20L and a 55gal), anything more then that and it becomes "work" instead of "hobby".

Pre Filter Sponge: What I do: Have several filters. Take out dirty filter & rinse out a lot. THEN toss in my shrimp tank and let them clean up all the little things. Take a clean as new filter out of the shrimp tank and put back in tank I removed the old one from. Use those shrimp to clean the filters more and feed the shrimp.
Also, great to see an old school Cory video!!!

One time I spent 1 hour getting rid of all the duckweed on a 20 gallon long. 2 days later, more duckweeds so I spend the next 3 weeks on duckweed patrol 10-15 minutes every other day with a fine shrimp net. After 3 weeks, I put a towel around the tank and left it dark for 1 week. I won the war but with the amount of energy and time I spent, it felt like a loss. I did the same on 2-10 gallon tank and 1-29 gallon, a quick lesson I learned is that spend the additional time to quarantine and double-triple heck quariple check plants bought on-line. The pond snail and MLS battle was sadly lost as I did not want to go to chemical warfare and just go nuclear. I went with assassins but I think they all got bribed. Love seeing the behind the scene of trying to maintain your fishbarn. Thank you.

This is a wonderful video Cory! These are the sorts of videos that drew me to your channel years ago. Things do not always need to be super polished, and honestly I think I enjoy seeing the more down to earth 'this is what maintaining all these tanks really looks like' sorts of videos. The polished videos are fine and dandy, sure. But they have a certain hollowness to them. A feeling of disengenuity when all a person ever posts are videos of super clean 'perfect' tanks. I much prefer to see the journey keepers go on with their tanks. The ups and the downs. That's the real adventure. That's the best content, the real content.
You are doing wonderfully Cory. I appreciate the time it takes for you to make these videos and show us your journey.

I love watching you work. Like you said at the end it inspires me to play with my tanks too. Gives me ideas to try new things and apply the tidbits of knowledge you pass on that apply to my tanks. I love that your tanks are works in progress just like mine are. Fighting algae in some, lighting in others, duckweed pros and cons, snails which I love but sometimes... I have a 5 gal bucket with a kitchen garbage bag in it just like your big composting can. It gets algae, duckweed, trimmings, anything that will compost. I take breaks while working on tanks to watch my fish. Seeing them happily swimming around and interacting with them makes me smile. I agree that sometimes duckweed is good. I had the most baby fish in the tank filled with hornwort and covered with duckweed but it can get out of hand or hop into tanks I don't want it in. While I am watching my fish on my breaks I notice how things are going in each tank and what needs attention. Fish keeping is a journey just like life is. I strive to have the perfect, beautifully scaped fish habitat in my little water worlds. I am not there yet and may never get to the perfection I have in my head. I enjoy the challenges and setbacks when I can figure out or learn how to achieve the goal I am chasing. It might not be easy or fun at the time but when I have success or get a happy accidental positive result it is worth it. Thanks for your great videos. Now I think I will go down to my fish room, put on my Murphy hoodie and continue the duckweed eradication I have been working on for a couple months in two of my planted tanks. I am down to fishing out one or 2 duckweed at a time using an old plastic rod for adjusting vertical blinds. I roll it next to them and magically they grab on then I bang the rod on the edge of my duckweed bucket to deposit them on the compost pile of their friends. Every time I open the lid I find a few duckweed that escaped my hunt, was hiding under the frogbit or way in the back.🐸

On the hoodie, if you put the aquarium co op logo just below the little Murphy it would be yet another advertising opportunity but more importantly I notice that other people like to ask and talk about what's on the front of my t-shirts, that doesn't happen when it's all on the back. Great opportunity to chat about aquarium co op with strangers! Love All your videos, this one especially.

After two weeks there's only like two boxes on some tables, I'd say that's a pretty clean operation. I like the simplicity of that green shirt. Hope you get some time to relax coming up. That's important, you seem like you work too hard. Maybe just put white electrical tape over that sign wire. Those wild caught Cupido Cichlids are beautiful. Elmer is gorgeous.

Love seeing the real world fish room. Mine is mostly the same. I’m always afraid to throw away duckweed because babies might be in there. That token gold fish is a great idea. Too bad they don’t stay small for long.
