Haha! I'm positively surprised by seeing my favorite barrang youtuber in Cambodia make a video about this. My Khmer girlfriend was so angry when she saw that video that I had to tell her that just writing "FU*K YOU" etc in his TH-cam channel would probably make her banned so she opted for a more balanced "you know nothing about Cambodia food so what are you talking so stupid and bad" etc. If she ever saw him on a street in Phnom Penh I don't think she could control herself and I don't think she's the only one 😂
TH-cam is very lenient with insults. I insult people with bad words all the time and all TH-cam does is give out warnings and that's only recently. A couple years ago nothing happened but now it gives out warnings. I've received many warnings but I'm not banned yet. And also I don't get warnings all the time so I think you get a warning when someone flag your comment. One F U won't get your girlfriend banned.

Wish you'd list whereabouts you eat in pp. It's changed a lot since I lived there 10 years ago. Safe food was much more difficult to find 10 years ago but pp has changed a lot. There isn't anywhere that doesn't have a high rise going up. I love the khmer people and am happy to see it developing. But 10 years ago it was very different. I mostly ate at riverside. There wasn't grab so getting around was often a bit of an adventure. Still I will always love the khmer. Cambodia was the first place I lived long term as an expat.

Thais food were made famous during the Vietnam war when American soldiers were stationed in Pattaya. When the war was over and Americans return home they raved about Thais food and Thais restaurant were popping up everywhere in America. I’m Khmer living in America, I don’t give a hoot what mister Roger says. Khmer foods as a whole depends on the region, examples: Battambang- spicy, PP - sweet etc. Cambodia have many ethnicities which also influenced its cuisines , Laos- Khmer , Thais-Khmer, Khmer Chinese, Khmer Muslim, Khmer Viet and of course influenced by the French. Thailand commercialized everything to the west - which is genius in my book, Cambodia should do the same.

I visited Cambodia last month and I love Khmer food, some cambodian food are better than Thai food. Thai food are too sweet for me. Cambodian people are friendly.
Tai people are from China, don't know why they claim most Cambodian food. I know they have some of their own original food but they instead claim all of Cambodian food which is very unfortunate because western people don't really know Cambodia that much and believe in Thai false claim. It doesn't help either when western propaganda always paint Cambodia as bad and communist.

Much later after failed lao rebellions (~19th century), the thai government started the thaification to integrate isaan into thailand. The lao language belongs to tai-kadai family and isaan is basically a dialect. Isaan is not a language, its just language written in thai letters. Thai letters are slightly different than lao letters. I dont came up with it, its just the history and fact. As simple as that. I have many friends from isaan and live in Laos. They all agree with that they all speak the exact same language - Lao. You can do your research, ອ້າຍ :) are you thai? Obviously not from isaan or Laos
@Muay_Thai1930 Well, brother, Lan Xang kingdom existed until the early 18th century, which is quite a long time. That’s were also kind of early lao identity derived. Then Laos was taken by Siam (today’s thailand), before the french proctectorate (and lots of fights in between, even involving burmese). Then, I agree, today’s Laos was basically established. Talking about the language, you can find many sources that the so called “isaan language” is referred as Lao language even by their native speakers in in the north-east of thailand as well as in laos (belonging to tai & kra-tai of course as you mentioned). As a sub-group of kra-dai there is lao-phutai - phu thai - thai yo and lao language (including isaan dialect which is spoken Lao written in thai letters). Go to places like nakhon phanom and you will see for example people speaking the typical phu-tai exactly the same as in many other parts on the other side of the mekong. The official language in isaan is of course thai as its thailand (school language, governement language as part of the thaification of from the thai government after many lao people migrated). BUT: the dialect spoken is isaan, which is Lao. I've recently been to laos as well as isaan and had great conversation in phu-thai language with thai people in isaan, absolutely funny and they loved it (to my background: I'm a farang speaking lao and understanding thai as well) Now back to the food: We have to distinguish between northern thai food, central thai food, southern thai food and northeastern thai food (isaan/lao food). So when people talk about thai food, there are many kinds of thai food and there are huge variations between those 4 main regions. Except isaan and lao food - thats very similar. ”Northeastern Thai-style (Isaan) food is actually derived from Lao cuisine…” google it brother. It's a lot more than just what Cambodians foods or Thai foods are. It's the mind of the people. The world knows Thailand more than they know Cambodia. Most of them think about war and atrocity when they hear about Cambodia. Thailand is smart. They kept their country out of war and catering different factions in Laos and Cambodia at their borders so they acted like defending Thailand. At the same time, Thailand engage in in their international endeavor to advance their country while Cambodians and Laos fought each other. Now, Thailand is far more famous destination for many people. However, Cambodian dishes are not much different from Thai food except the chilly part. Thai put chilly on everything, not in Cambodia. Today, Cambodia is growing. More and more people get to know the country, the people and their foods. But they still have to do the catch up to Thailand. That's why we hear a lot more of Thailand than Cambodia. I've eaten Khmer foods almost all of my life. I know what it is.

As a countries that are not well known while people try to build the country back, bring up their culture and food to the world, it's only reasonable that they're not happy about it. He's an influencer with millions of subscriber that can effect a lot of people mind to think that Cambodian and Lao's cuisine are actually horrible compare to Thai. Are there any plans to legalize cocaine, meth, etc. to further promote tourism in Thailand? And it's still popularly known for its sex tourism. An English article was released this year titled "Thailand is a Global Capital of (Illegal) Sex Work". According to the article, Thailand has a long documented history of prostitution since the 1300s and started booming in the early 1900s when it was servicing Chinese immigrants, then Japanese and then U.S. soldiers. There's no envy here. Cambodia, and probably Laos as well, do not want to attract tourism by pimping their women and attracting drug users.

I always find Thai food too sweet and super spicy in everything. You have to tell them if you don't eat spicy. Khmer has more varieties and Kroeung (Khmer treasure).
Oh OMG. I have the same problem with Thai food too. Too sweet, spicy. I tried padtai from about 8 different restaurants and I couldn’t eat anymore. Too sour from too much tamarind source and sweet. My thai friend complained about thai is too sweet and she thai.

I don't live in Cambodia but I did visit about 10 years ago. While I believe there's good food to be had in Cambodia, I sadly didn't taste any. The famous chicken amock(?) - my memory is very bad - tasted like a wannabe Thai dish. The ingredients were there... Just not enough of it.

Thats because 10 years ago, Cambodia food wasnt heavily influenced by Thai food yet. This is a fact. Lately they have been learning how to cook Thai food a lot with some minor twists here and there. Go visit Cambodia now again and when they cook, you will see they use Thai brands imported from Thailand because thats how they learnt food recipes while they worked in Thai restaurants 🤷♂️

Then Laos was taken by Siam (today’s thailand), before the french proctectorate (and lots of fights in between, even involving burmese). Then, I agree, today’s Laos was basically established. Talking about the language, you can find many sources that the so called “isaan language” is referred as Lao language even by their native speakers in in the north-east of thailand as well as in laos (belonging to tai & kra-tai of course as you mentioned). As a sub-group of kra-dai there is lao-phutai - phu thai - thai yo and lao language (including isaan dialect which is spoken Lao written in thai letters). Go to places like nakhon phanom and you will see for example people speaking the typical phu-tai exactly the same as in many other parts on the other side of the mekong. The official language in isaan is of course thai as its thailand (school language, governement language as part of the thaification of from the thai government after many lao people migrated). BUT: the dialect spoken is isaan, which is Lao. I've recently been to laos as well as isaan and had great conversation in phu-thai language with thai people in isaan, absolutely funny and they loved it (to my background: I'm a farang speaking lao and understanding thai as well)
Now back to the food: We have to distinguish between northern thai food, central thai food, southern thai food and northeastern thai food (isaan/lao food). So when people talk about thai food, there are many kinds of thai food and there are huge variations between those 4 main regions. Except isaan and lao food - thats very similar. ”Northeastern Thai-style (Isaan) food is actually derived from Lao cuisine…” google it brother. It's a lot more than just what Cambodians foods or Thai foods are. It's the mind of the people. The world knows Thailand more than they know Cambodia. Most of them think about war and atrocity when they hear about Cambodia. Thailand is smart. They kept their country out of war and catering different factions in Laos and Cambodia at their borders so they acted like defending Thailand. At the same time, Thailand engage in in their international endeavor to advance their country while Cambodians and Laos fought each other. Now, Thailand is far more famous destination for many people. However, Cambodian dishes are not much different from Thai food except the chilly part. Thai put chilly on everything, not in Cambodia. Today, Cambodia is growing. More and more people get to know the country, the people and their foods. But they still have to do the catch up to Thailand. That's why we hear a lot more of Thailand than Cambodia. I've eaten Khmer foods almost all of my life. I know what it is.

I personally think that Cambodian and Laos people are not over reacting anything. As a countries that are not well known while people try to build the country back, bring up their culture and food to the world, it's only reasonable that they're not happy about it. He's an influencer with millions of subscriber that can effect a lot of people mind to think that Cambodian and Lao's cuisine are actually horrible compare to Thai. A lot of Laos food content creator also unhappy about it cause a lot of Thai food was originated from Lao. Are there any plans to legalize cocaine, meth, etc. to further promote tourism in Thailand? And it's still popularly known for its sex tourism. An English article was released this year titled "Thailand is a Global Capital of (Illegal) Sex Work". According to the article, Thailand has a long documented history of prostitution since the 1300s and started booming in the early 1900s when it was servicing Chinese immigrants, then Japanese and then U.S. soldiers. There's no envy here. Cambodia, and probably Laos as well, do not want to attract tourism by pimping their women and attracting drug users.

I always find Thai food too sweet and super spicy in everything. You have to tell them if you don't eat spicy. Khmer has more varieties and Kroeung (Khmer treasure).
Oh OMG. I have the same problem with Thai food too. Too sweet, spicy. I tried padtai from about 8 different restaurants and I couldn’t eat anymore. Too sour from too much tamarind source and sweet. My thai friend complained about thai is too sweet and she thai.

I don't live in Cambodia but I did visit about 10 years ago. While I believe there's good food to be had in Cambodia, I sadly didn't taste any. The famous chicken amock(?) - my memory is very bad - tasted like a wannabe Thai dish. The ingredients were there... Just not enough of it.
A lot has changed in 10 years. Food quality has improved. There are more midscale and upper scale restaurants.

Thats because 10 years ago, Cambodia food wasnt heavily influenced by Thai food yet. This is a fact. Lately they have been learning how to cook Thai food a lot with some minor twists here and there. Go visit Cambodia now again and when they cook, you will see they use Thai brands imported from Thailand because thats how they learnt food recipes while they worked in Thai restaurants 🤷♂️
