They found the kid’s name: Joseph Augustus Zarelli. The police apparently have a suspicion about who the killer was but remarked that it’d be irresponsible to be public with that information. One step closer, guys.

Since he was never reported missing and nobody ever came forward to claim him after his body was found, I'm thinking the family or someone close to them had something to do with it.

Apparently the first witness who 'didn't want to get involved' was actually checking muskrat traps he had set, and didn't report the discovery of the boy because he didn't want the police to confiscate the traps.
Silly reason not to report the boy, but it doesn't seem to be really suspicious when you think about it.
They were both using illegal traps in the area and were afraid of getting in trouble
UPDATE: The Boy in the Box has been identified! The boy’s name is Joseph Augustus Zarelli. While authorities are still unsure who did such a horrible thing to this sweet boy, they are happy he now has a voice and hope that it will help to solve his murder. Fly high Joseph.

Yeah, it likely that they didn’t have him in a hospital, they didn’t want him so they abused him and then dumped him. It’s sickening but that’s something that could have happened.
Personally I think they did an at home birth and never got stuff registered so that they could plan to sell him off later in life

His name is *Joseph Augustus Zarelli* unfortunately genealogists still don't know who the killer is. Genealogists said that Joseph has a number of siblings both on his mother and fathers' side who are living but out of respect they will keep the name of the parents confidential.

My theory is that the boy was abused by his parents and was born at home. He was never allowed to leave the house and one day the parents ended up killing him- hense the reason noone confessed to know him

That is possible but that injury is not caused by hands- I suspect they beat him with something. . . But if they did why hadn’t the boy lost blood? They can use that blood to find its parents and weapons.

Joseph Augustus Zarelli is his name. It was released by Philadelphia PD. His name was identified through groundbreaking genealogical DNA evidence. They traced down the mother, had her children tested, and it was a match. They then found the father from the birth certificate, whose was written incorrectly (very common in this time). DNA tested father’s children, it was a match.
DNA from Joseph was extracted in 2019 when the PD got approval to exhume Joseph to get DNA. This took over 2 years to properly process the DNA that had degraded.
There are multiple theories, especially stemming from the terms used from the PD such as “birth mother/father” terms, hinting that he was “adopted” out. There was a woman by the name of “M” (later Martha) who had an eerie story that matched details uncannily. She was later dismissed for being mentally I’ll, but in her testimony, she said her mother was extremely abusive which could have contributed to her illnesses. The link from the birth parents to M’s mother through adoption are unknown which raises a lot of questions. Most are unsure of her story.
There are a lot of questions and very little answers. This is what we know:
His name is Joseph Augustus Zarelli. Born on January 13, 1953 and died in February, 1957.

"Martha" also had other details about the case that had never been released. For one, that he had been beaten to death after having thrown up his dinner. The dinner Martha described matched the contents of the boy's stomach.

Extremely upsetting. He was clearly severely abused so many more marks on him than what the examiner claimed. His head was shaved, looks like multiple bruises on his face and behind his ears. There is something eerily familiar about this story... I can’t place my finger on it. 1957 was not that long ago in reality. (63yrs) someone still knows something about this.

I always think that it's something else like some ghost or person.
I went down a Reddit rabbit hole on this case last week. My money is on Martha’s statement. She said the boy was purchased to be abused, kept hidden in the home, and was beaten to death after vomiting his dinner of baked beans. The “mother” who purchased him slammed his head on the floor repeatedly for being sick, then bathed him when he became unresponsive. She then forced Martha to help her dispose of the body in the place he was found. When a passing male motorist stopped to see if he could help them at all, the “mother” forced Martha to stand in front of the license plate visible to the Good Samaritan. Apparently, 3 details only known to the police were mentioned in Martha’s statement - 1) baked beans were found in the child’s stomach 2) his fingers were pruned from being in water (the bath) 3) there was a man that came forward and said he saw a woman and a girl unloading a box soon before the child’s body was found. The police refused to rely on this woman’s statement, sadly, because of her laundry list of mental illnesses. A tragedy in itself because perhaps, if she were subjected to the abuse she claimed she and this boy in the box were, the abuse itself could be the catalyst for a lot of the psychological turmoil she suffered from, and ultimately, made the cops dismiss her despite the damning evidence she came forward with.
Yeah I myself was convinced in the woman's story sadly it didn't go any further they should've investigated and might solve the case, I feel bad for the boy. He didn't deserve that

I don’t think the child slave you have to sexually and physically abuse is going to be on display when neighbors pop over for a visit

If she was chalked up as the unreliable “crazy lady” by the community and the police she could’ve faded into obscurity with no one really remembering any links or info for internet sleuths to track her down

11.30.22 Update: The police have FINALLY identified him and are going to reveal his name to the public next week! Thank goodness for advances in technology and science that will help this case and many other cold cases like it. 🙌🏽 This boy deserves to have his name back and to be remembered for who he was 🤍

Ha. Pretty sure everyone here seeing this comment. I know right when I saw the news, I came here to see the new comments.
My theory about this case is that, the boys parents are the ones who killed him. I noticed initially that the child had a very elongated head. Which lead me to presume that it's possible that the parents knew their child had physical disorder or birth defect and were ashamed by that. Like In they way people used to have "disappointment rooms" where they would do exactly that. Hide children that didn't match up to societal standards. Which would explain why he was not recognized in the system as ever existing, If he was being hidden way.And as for the head trauma, perhaps the boy , because of a birth defect, maybe fell or hit his head. Causing him to pass and the parents panicked , or another opinion, if to the parents he was considered a "disappointment child" they might have been abusive and acid killed him. And in either scenario, to make sure they weren't charged, cut his fingernails and hair, to make him look unrecognizable to to public so he could not be traced back to them.
That's probably why he had to wear the hat with a strap,so that it wouldn't show his head

Sylvia Johnson His cause of death was due to head injury. The head swells up but it's possible he might have been mentally unstable due to the last theory of not wanting to bath.
This one's especially upsetting because it's a young child. And those pictures of his face and head are so disturbing to me

As of today, 12/8/22, we now know who the boy is: Joseph Augustus Zarelli. it's easy to find who is most likely his father online, who is recently deceased. ages match up, names as well as location. I am so grateful LE never gave up on this little boy. He now has a name and although his killer is most likely passed, at least him getting his name back has now taken place. He was only 4 years old...and he was really small, only 30 lbs. obviously abused, not fed and never claimed. so heartbreaking. Rest easy Joey Z.

Update!! As of November 30, 2022 the victim has been identified and his name will be released the following week.
His name is Joseph Augustus Zarelli! The parents are deceased. Therefore are NOT being made public. Joseph does have siblings who are alive though. The murderer still remains unsolved but investigations continue. There are even suspects. Neverteless, Joseph has his name back! They never forgot him, and justice will be served. I sincerely hope Joseph can rest a little easier now that the world knows his name ✊🏻

The person who spent so much of his life couldn't live long enough to see him identified, but his daughter did. So his work paid off in the end. Props to the three of them and all investigators. Hopefully this case will be solved.
