Wow! To here Count Basie speak that respectively of Duke Ellington, as if he wasn't even in Duke's league, that really made an impression on me. I always felt in my mind and heart that he was a musical genius, but now it really hit home.
Duke's playing style was in another realm to Basie- Ellington had this lofty elegant tone. Basie's was an essay in musical physics- the relationship of space and time's relationship to sound. That's because in his early days Basie was socialising at the piano- but still swinging out.
Duke Ellington had the greatest jazz big band of all time, Count Basie had the greatest swing big band of all time.
Excellent take 🎶

Bill Basie is all class - he's funny, he's a genius and yet so humble - what a joyous human even all these years after his death
Man I wish I could've talked to the Count. Funny guy
Brilliant
Such a genius, and yet so humble. Love them both
2 legends..wish i could've met either one or both...Oscar Peterson is & always will be the gold standard of jazz piano!
That was SO sweet.
Nobody:
Oscar Peterson: 0:30
I think it was Basie who played that chord but in any case, a single simple three note chord and it's intsant Duke Ellington! Absolutely amazing.
People who claim,
I won’t finish that now just in case it’s a lie.
Plus la tricolour
Basie's humor was like his piano playing:Understated, but with sly wit.Very buddah-like.
