    Agreed, I think the Chinese version is the better story too. They actually spent time to get to know each other first as friends then as a couple so you know the love they shared is more genuine as opposed to Romeo and Juliet who fell in love on first sight which is creepy.

      The entire plot of Romeo and Juliet took place in 5 days.
      That's terrifying.
      Honestly though, the idea of falling in love with a genderbent version of your BFF is pretty...weird.

      Not only that but Romeo and Juliet is rumored to be Shakespeare making fun of teenage love, the Chinese version you can tell that their love wasn't just puppy love.

    I hope they didn't turn into the sort of butterflies that live only a day. THAT would be depressing!

      haha yea that would suck

    • @wonphi
      @wonphi 10 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      That would only suck relative to a human being. For a butterfly, 1 day will be a lifetime, and having spend a lifetime with the person you love, that doesn't suck at all! :)

      +wonphi Agreed! That reminds me of one of my favourite quotes... "If this entire lifetime of yours is only an instant, and even if we can only be together for an instant in this lifetime, that is still an entire lifetime."

      A young woman from Su Zhou told me it was the women from Su Zhou who were known to be beautiful. :-) I guess her version was a little biased. Could be both -- the scenery and the women. She said it was because the water was good. Maybe the water helps the natural scenery and the people. :-)

    Liang Shan Bo's name was on the stone monument of his grave, so the chance of some other person's body being in the grave would be close to 0%.
    I agree with some of the other commentators. I honestly don't agree with this story being called the "Chinese equivalent" of Romeo and Juliet. Shan Bo and Ying Tai have been together for three years. They know each other's personalities pretty well. Unlike Romeo and Juliet where it's "Oh hey, you look hot! Let's get married even though I've only known you for one night!" Romeo and Juliet was not true love. It was more like, "attracted by appearance".

      My father scolded my brother for separating frogs who had jumped on top of other frogs and were riding "piggyback". My father smirked and told my brother, those frogs were "having fun" and you interrupted them. I didn't understand that explanation until 20 years later and had a delayed "Ohhhhhhh, that's what father meant by "having fun." :-)

      +Katarzyna Matracz If you watch some old chinese dramas, there is an actual ceremony which they would drink each other blood with alcohol to become 'real' brothers =]]

    • @linksibuna9574
      @linksibuna9574 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That's why it is called Blood Brothers because of the fact that you drink eachothers blood to swear an oath of Brotherhood for eternity. The Norse have a similar oath where they cut their palms(not cut it off but enough to make it bleed and then they would swear an oath of brotherhood for life)

    I saw the 1994 movie story version. I was unaware of the version of the legend that you describe. The movie version seems more realistic than the version you mention. I prefer the 1994 movie version. I made a music video with film clips from that movie using the Butterfly Lovers Concerto from the 2008 Chinese Music Festival. TH-cam removed my music video even though my 2 sources for my music video were posted on TH-cam.
    P.S. I think Shakespeare adapted his play of Romeo and Juliet after hearing the story of Butterfly Lovers. I think the 1994 movie version of the Butterfly Lovers is one of the best love stories ever made into a movie.

    Hey Asian Beauty Secrets and Strictly Dumpling / Off the Great Wall . Did you watch the movie/drama adaptations of this story. I managed to watch the Vietnamese opera of the story which did have so many differences to the original in order to expand the characters even further .I also watched the TVB Drama Journey to the West back in 1996 where one of Zhu Bajie's rebirths that would end in tragedy was Liang Shan Bo and Zhu Ying Tai where the whole scene was a parody of the 1994 movie "The Lovers".

    This story is way better than Romeo and Juliet, because at least they known each other for 3 years before they were lovestruck

    I like the Butterfly lovers more than Romeo and Juliet as well. I like the fact that they were together for 3 years and built a strong relationship before falling in love. I love all the different tv dramas and movies of Butterfly Lovers. I always feel that Romeo and Juliet fell in love quickly and faded quickly. More lust, teenage hormones and forbidden apple sort of relationship than love.

    Can you guys consider doing Google live hangouts? I'm bummed about the time you guys had a meet and greet and I couldn't come... You could do it once a month and have a live Q&A or quiz about your past videos etc. Just a suggestion :D
