  • Sarah, a runaway teenager in the city of Metropolis, encounters a persistent newspaper reporter named Clark Kent who won't leave her alone until she agrees to an interview for his newspaper column. Ten questions -- that's all he asks. In their moments together, the fragments of her tragic life emerge, but her anger towards superheroes and Superman himself explodes in full force. If he is so great and so powerful, why is the world such a horrible place? Why doesn't he do something about it?

      Throughout the interview, Clark keeps telling "Sarah" that he's Superman ("I'm right here", for another example) but she doesn't understand because she doesn't believe that Superman is real. And note that her main reason for not believing in Superman is that she can't conceive of "someone who goes around saving people" - "People don't fly" is a less-important reason.

    What a lot of people hate about Superman is the fact that he is such a powerful character, thus making it difficult to craft stories for him. I think current and future writers need to draw inspiration from this fan film; maybe they'd remember that even though he isn't from Earth, his heart is just as human as any other.

    Despite being a lifelong Superman fan (one who walked out of "Man of Steel" after THAT scene) I have just now discovered this - thanks Tvtropes!
    My very favorite thing is that Clark never wastes time defending Superman. That would have been such an easy trap to fall into as a writer. @@JakeThomasMoviesI think that's one of the things that pisses Lex Luthor off even more, if he were to see Superman, an alien with godlike powers work a simple 9 to 5 job, he would feel some type of way, where as he as a human wants godlike abilities to rule.

    • @JakeThomasMovies
      @JakeThomasMovies  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      John Byrne addressed this in a brilliant plot twist when he wrote the comic book reboot Man of Steel back in the 1980s. Luthor used computer software to analyze Superman’s connection to Clark Kent. When the computer deduced that Superman was Kent, he destroyed the computer because he thought it was faulty. He insisted that no super-powered being would demean themself so low as to live a normal life. This was a great update on the question “Why does no one recognize Superman with glasses?” and maintaining the secret identity, and also revealed Luthor’s own weakness - his “kryptonite” - is privilege, pride, and projecting those attributes onto others.

The first two thirds of Man Of Steel is ALL character development. how about the scene in the diner? the earlier scene with Jonathan and young Clark after he saved the bus? there are a lot of scenes that you're ignoring because the last third is a lot of action. even then, look at the emotional content of the last few scenes... Every time I watch this film I seem to find another layer of subtlety to it, the details in the acting or in the script. "Her complaints..." She lost her parents at the age of 2, raised in foster home(s); so he can identify with her, sympathize with what she's going through, and contrast it with the caring both his natural and adoptive parents gave him. No wonder he uses his abilities to show her a little trick, coming almost to the point of just stating that he's Superman. But by doing that he gets her to change her outlook; if she was just talking with Superman, maybe she was wrong about how hopeless her life had become. Someone cares.

    I think what many people should realise that when writing Superman, the most important element of his character to get right is Clark Kent. This kind, mild-mannered and humble man who saves the world simply because it's the right thing to do. Superman has the cool powers and the inspiring moments but it's Clark Kent that is at the heart of it. If Batman is Bruce Wayne's true identity then Clark Kent is Superman's true identity.

It's shot well, Mr. Nagle looks the part and plays it well...I wish Warner Brothers would give this heart to the feature film treatments. Hope is such a powerful thing. It's a shame Hollywood seems to feel it's not needed in the superhero genre. I get that a movie with this premise wouldn't sell billions of dollars of tickets. The economics of film are pretty simple- if it doesn't require translation, ie explosions, it opens up more doors to audiences. But that doesn't mean the feeling of this couldn't be interwoven into a larger story. Bravo guys. I'll be showing this off to my film classes tomorrow.

    My favorite version of Clark Kent was Christopher Reeve's, of course, and he played it for comedy. If a "straight" version is going to be done, this is perfect. Thanks. What's most impressive is that he doesn't have to step into a phone booth to make his point. Good stuff. Both actors are excellent.

    • @bobblum5973
      @bobblum5973 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would slightly disagree with your opinion on Christopher Reeve playing it for comedy. I think his Superman films were a product of the time they were made, and mixed comedy and drama. They were larger than life, more over the top comic book styled, especially Superman 3 and 4. Superman Returns was more an attempt to return to the first two in style and content; it wasn't a blockbuster but I certainly enjoyed it.
      This short film, "one on one", does such an excellent job of getting us into the characters, in part because it is short. It uses subtlety instead of special effects, with the characters words being said but carrying layers of meaning behind them.

    I just wanted to take a moment to thank you so, so much for this little treasure of a film. I suffer from anxiety and depression, and some days it's really, really hard to get motivation of courage to do anything. One On One really does help remind me that my heroes are always around when I need them to be, and that having faith in Superman as a good and honest character isn't misplaced. @@JakeThomasMovies Hello there, how kind of you to check in on me :) The pandemic's been a strain on whole countries and continents, so I count myself as lucky that it's touched no one in my family (touch wood!). I've been housebound for well over a year now, so lockdown for me was more or less business as usual, just with less people around and much more wildlife venturing out. My family are over 500 miles away and are very matter of fact about distancing, washing hands, wearing masks etc, and we're in regular phone contact. My friends have been hit somewhat harder, as we can't meet up often and as some of my friends are front line keyworkers (Police, care workers etc), but we stay in touch via social media and phone often. Superman is on my TV in various forms a LOT these days, along with my beloved Doctor Who, and One on One is a regular viewing fixture these days. How are you and yours doing in these most unusual and very dark times, Jake? Are you all safe and well? I do hope so.... and thank you again for checking in on me. It's very.... well, it's very Clark of you. x

      @@ProfessorChronotis yes, staying safe and well. Lost my full time job, unfortunately, but that’s allotted time now for more creative things, and my wife (“Sarah”) and I are still able to get by. One thing I’ve learned is how it’s better to be present rather than dread the future, because my overactive imagination can concoct the worst case scenarios too easily. I’ve had a few panic attacks during our quarantine, during one of which the nurse on the phone told me to call the paramedics. So now, thankfully, being unemployed actually allows me to make regular weekly meetings with other friends (outdoors and in masks!) so we can keep in touch better than ever.

    On point look at who Clark really is under the cape. So many people don't get that Superman, while very powerful, is not all knowing and has his limits. He can't fix everything. But he'll try doing whatever he can to help. Many good stories have been written showing Clark make a difference outside his role as Superman. This is a good example of one.

  • @jamesshepherd9390
    @jamesshepherd9390 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    This is the best Superman and DC fan film ever made. Congratulations on crafting a perfect distillation of a character - a beautifully human film that captures what Clark is all about. I love that there's no action because there just doesn't need to be. Instead of going the route so many other fan films do and trying to include fake-looking special effects and clumsily choreographed fight sequences, you took a more mature route, correctly observing that two characters simply sitting down and talking with one another makes for some of the most compelling story-telling in cinema. Jake, I'm sure you're well aware that you chose a structure that was more difficult to write, but I want you to know that you did so successfully with flying colours. Your actress Erin Brown and actor John Nagel both did phenominal work as well, truly capturing the essence of each character through their body language and line delivery. Each gave their character a convincing sense of depth and verisimilitude despite only having a few minutes of dialogue. It makes me really proud to be a Superman fan when I see films like this. An awesome, absolutely fantastic job to everyone who worked on this project. Certainly a 10/10, and I hope to see more of your guys' work in the future. Love it.

      Thank you, James! I want to tell Erin and John what you said about their performances. They'll love to hear it. Yeah, I think Superman's compassion and kindness tend to set him apart from other heroes. The stories that show that side of him resonate with me. What are some of your favorite comic books stories? I think my favorite Superman comic is still "For All Seasons." I really like the theme of "What's so Funny About Truth, Justice, and the American Way?" which they turned into "Superman vs. The Elite," which just might be the best Superman feature.

    • @jamesshepherd9390
      @jamesshepherd9390 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JakeThomasMovies Hey Jake, thanks for the response! "For All Seasons" is truly an amazing story, and "Superman vs The Elite" is definitely one of my favourites as well! If I had to pick an absolutely favourite story, it's "American Alien" from 2015! While the book does have some cool action scenes, most of it really explores how Clark developed his sense of compassion, love, and kindness from the Kents and other people throughout his childhood and early adult life! A lot of those stories, like getting into trouble with your friends in a small rural town, or moving to a big city where you feel kind of lost and uncertain, are things I can relate to really well because of my background!

The funny thing is I googled John Nagle and honestly in most other photos he looks nothing like Superman, but somehow here I'm totally convinced that this is Clark Kent - raised by Ma and Pa in Smallville and I completely buy that at any moment those glasses could come off...shirt rip...and he'll fly into action as the Man of Steel. I wish there was more - but that's what makes this so darn good. From a Fan, THANK YOU!
