  • Zoë Angell is a 26-year-old PE teacher seeking a divorce from her errant milkman husband. In achieving this she visits a solicitor called Alec Callender, a 53-year-old widower. At first things go wrong between them and Zoë storms out, but a chance meeting in a pub with Alec's son draws Alec and Zoë together, starting something that will have a tremendous effect on both of their lives.

It’s 32 years ago today since this wonderful series debuted ...I still love it, and Anton. Where does the time go.

Every couple of years I come to this series and watch it back-to-back. Still one of the nicest sitcoms around.
    Thanks for posting

Even though Acid House was all the rage in '89 in London; Me and the Mrs. Loved this series So much; we jumped in our TR7 one day and drove to Pinner from North London; just to see where this Classic Series was Set....

Old guy from the US here. They showed this (along with many other British sitcoms) on PBS. You're going to think I'm crazy, but I had the hots for Miss Flood (I was in my 30s at the time).

I love this show, I wish there were more shows like this today. Humor, romance that they aren’t afraid to hide. The first season was definitely my favorite but the whole show was good. I wish Eve Matheson hadn’t left.

Yes, do, I wonder why she left? Although I do like Lesley Dunlop as well. I have also wondered why the actor who played Mr Henty left as well.

@@seansmith445 The older I get, the more I appreciate seeing shows set in fairly normal life. As Time Goes By is another. I watch both over and over. "Minder" is also another, even though it has quite unusual plots. And so is Lovejoy, IMHO. One can imagine all these stories occurring in regular life. Same with Rumpole.

The late, great Anton Rogers, (10 January 1933 - 1 December 2007) was a fine actor.
Catch him as conman Calvin Bream in a 1969 episode ("When The Spirit Moves You") of "Randall & Hopkirk (deceased)" he is superb.
He is perhaps best known for starring in the sitcoms Fresh Fields (ITV, 1984-86), as well its sequel series French Fields (ITV, 1989-91)
He also had a long career both on stage and in film. His stage roles ranged from contemporary comedy and satirical farce to Restoration comedy, Ibsen, Shaw and Wilde and Peter Nichols. He appeared in films such as The Fourth Protocol (1987), The Day of the Jackal (1973) and Scrooge (1970).
He also narrated the children's animated TV series Old Bear Stories and appeared as Andre, the comically corrupt French policeman who aided Michael Caine in his romantic/financial schemes in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.
Anton died 1 December 2007 (aged 74) in Reading, England. Although the cause of death wasnt stated, it would be safe to surmise heart failure.
    R.I.P. Anton

Britcoms are to sitcoms, what a warm, soothing cup of Earl Grey tea, or a delicious mound of shepherd's pie, or a satisfying pint of cold draft beer, or a sumptuous plate of roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, or a warm, comforting mug of hot chocolate, or a serving of succulent fish and chips, are.

The opening scenes were filmed in Pinner High Street. That church in the background is St. John the Baptist, Church Street, Pinner. The Christening episode was filmed at that church. Oddly enough Zoe and Alec's house ("Crendon") was on filmed on Church Lane, Pinner as well.

I love to this series and watch it from time to time. Love all of the cast. Nice to see Clive Francis in a comedic role., one of my favourite actors. He was my favourite in Poldark. Hilary of course was hilarious and I can identify with Miss Flood, as I worked with a similar character. Oh, happy days. Tku for posting.

So,Alec came to Pinner to be a layer with his uncle. Does that mean his uncle was Mr Semple? That would explain why Alec left his name on the door. Sixth or 7th time watching and I just caught this 13:11

Horrible memories of this as it meant bedtime soon and school the next day (I can't remember if it was Sunday specifically but it was one of those shows we had to watch because our parents had it on). I really disliked the theme tune because as a kid it just reminded me how far away Christmas was! Not nearly as bad as the likes of Songs of Praise, Last of the Summer Wine and Antiques Roadshow though.
