"Dad's Army is one of the best comedies ever written."
Couldn't agree more! I grew up laughing at 'Dad's Army' and even though I'm nearly 70 now, I'm still watching it and still laughing! 😁

Never get sick of these, Im in my 40s now, used to watch these repeated every early evening on Australian tv in the 90s when I was a teen. The blustering Mainwaring, overly casual Wilson and comically soldiering Jones never failed to make the half hour fly

Though set in WWII, the situations and interplay between characters is ageless - and thus the superb comedy is also ageless.in 2005, my 5yr old son would scream with pure delight watching the expressions and situations: proof that this comedy is still current and relevant. Brilliant comedy - as only the British can produce!! 👍

When i first watched this episode i was preparing to be a highschool teacher. this episode gave me the creeps worse than a horror movie. Working with people is frikkin' hard. if you don't stand your ground firmly, they eat you alive.
Now i've had 11 years experience so i've learned to tactfully handle difficult situations. ... i hope.
Remember, these are old men, yet, in this episode they are behaving like rebelious teenagers. Still, Cpt Mainwaring did his job well, he could have been a lot harsher, he could have made them all hate him, yet he asked them calmly, appealed to their conscience, then left, giving the men the choice to do the right thing. On the other hand, poor Wilson was way too soft, but he recovered in the end.
    Valuable lesson on class management.

Quite a lot of episodes were disrupted by drunkenness or illness so there is a run of episodes of much higher quality and a run of episodes where changes had to be made at the last minute.

I cannot help but feel a profound sense of sympathy for the Capt. At times I believe , he means well and I don't feel that he's a bad sort of chap in anyway . In addition , his wife is a miserable excuse for a human being , he definitely deserves better. One can't help but feel his frustrations and worse still, I believe that he is all too aware of the situation he is in. And interestingly enough he can at times be insensitive and cold to others , I believe that he's a tortured soul and completely frustrated .....

I feel a great sympathy for Mainwaring too... he's the one who took the responsability and took the danger to create a 'army' out of nothing... he had no much to offer ok... we can laugh ofcourse ... but he did at least SOMETHING for his country

Regardless of his little petty egotistic actions which are normal human foibles, Capt Mainwaring has his moments of great courage.

Ionian Ions very true, like in the episode Asleep in the deep, when the members of Jones section and Warden Hodges each pick a piece of paper and the piece of paper with a cross on it goes to the head of the chain of them picking up pieces of debris at the waterworks. Then mainwaring picks a blank piece of paper but says he has a cross on his piece of paper.

He was a very brave man. Negated by being somewhat pompous and guilty of great inverse snobbery. You cannot deny that despite his faults, he was be best man to lead this platoon.

    • @eamonstafford2056

@@benters3509 Really? In reality Wilson would be the Platoon Commander and Mainwaring the Pl Sgt but I think the script writers deliberately reversed the roles on purposes to make it more funny. And of course it is. In one episode Wilson came out of the closet and wore his uniform of Captain from WW1 to a ball! It threw Mainwaring completely off balance.

Basil: (pointing to the lovely view) "That is Torquay, Madam."
Mrs Richards: "It's not good enough!"
Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..."
Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!"
Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky."
Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction."
