All-New 2024 Toyota Tacoma vs. 2023 Tacoma | That Much Better? | Interior, Powertrain & More

  • The Toyota Tacoma is by far the most popular midsize truck on the market, so to say there’s a lot riding on the redesigned 2024 model would be an understatement. The current 2023 Tacoma remains as popular as ever thanks to sky high residual values and a legion of loyal fans, but there are still plenty of issues the new truck could fix. In this comparison test, Edmunds’ Brian Wong puts the 2024 Tacoma up against the 2023 Tacoma to find out if the new truck is worth the upgrade.

    With the new Tacoma boasting impressive improvements over the last generation, we are excited to put it up against our new long-term Chevrolet Colorado over the next year. What tests would you like to see us do with both trucks? Let us know in the comments below!

      3K + price increase is way too much. Way for Toyota to screw over their customers. 2500 was the most they should have ever increased it by.

      For exactly what reason? What has changed to change people's mind about Toyota's reputation. I'm pretty sure it's just a bunch of idiots mad they can't have 6 cylinders or the price increase making excuses.for why they don't like the truck.

    The days of the low stressed V6 and 5.7 V8 (Tundra) are gone. Wonder how these high strung, smaller turbo motors will fare when they are 15-20 years old... My 16 year old 5.7 still runs like brand new.

      Turbos don't do well and don't last for very long. Gm tried the same thing when they got rid of their V8 and put in a 4 cylinder with a Turbo. Nothing but problems, and the same thing is going to happen with these vehicles as well.

    This is the best '24 Tacoma 11/28 release video by far. Thank you for comparing it with the 3rd gen so directly. As a 3rd gen owner who agrees with *every* gripe you presented, this video answered my questions.
    The only other big thing was the 3rd gen ride quality. I assume, when you have the rest of the models, you can give a better take of the SR5/TRD trim coil springs and their road manners.

    MPG numbers for most trims on the gas models are almost identical to the V6....
    That being said, the hybrid's will probably be at minimum, a 2k premium for a 5/10 MPG increase. Per toyota's website, this would bring the high volume offroad and sport trims to nearly 45k before destination and TTL. I feel like the appeal would be lost on many existing 3rd gen owners to upgrade at this price point. Just my 0.02

    • @XploreAz

    The last pickup I had was a Datsun, probably in 71/72. Back then there was NO back seat to worry about, and I don't recall any pickups with a back seat at the time. Back then the claim to fame was carrying a 4' x 8' sheet of plywood or sheetrock... perhaps between the wheelwells. ( NOT in my Datsun, but full sized pick up trucks) By today's standards my Datsun was pretty dinky.

      @onehandwashestheother You're also pretty damned arrogant , asserting that anyone who enjoys and pursues a career where the ability to haul materials is needed is a "stupid ape." Get over yourself please.
      Home building is a skilled and noble career, and I'll bet you enjoy living in one too. I suppose "stupid apes" also built the truck you depend on to get to your self-styled "high society"job? What makes you so cool, brother?
      I had a friend in college who majored in manufacturing engineering and was quite talented at it, but siting in a cube on his computer drive him nuts, So he joined his cousin doing line work for PG&E.
      Different strokes for different folks, mister. Not all blue collar workers are apes. Clessie Cummins built his first engine at age 12, without college or computers. I'd say he did all right in life. His engines deliver your food.
      Have a more humble day, please. Peace to you. All people and all legitimate occupations matter and make the world spin. Even the people who make your toilet paper. Remember, after this fleeting life, the last shall be first.

    It is not fair to start an argument by saying you don’t like one side of it because anemic engine, bad interior and bad entertainment system. All while forgetting the virtues. The old powertrain is indestructible. You want 300,000 trouble free miles, buy a 2023 Tacoma. You want to go outdoors, any TRD 4x4 gets you there. You want to have an interior that is functional, that means no gimmicks with buttons, knobs, normal Trans lever and hand break get the Tacoma. The new one looks beautiful. I hope it is as good as old.

    Why go turbo and no go all the way…it’s a low boost turbo meant to help longevity (which hurts power by not boosting adequately and efficiency by not using a smaller engine), then they’re pairing it with a hybrid system meant to help power (not efficiency). Offer two power trains, one larger higher boosted turbo and a smaller HYBRID with CVT (& 30 mpg), let the buyer decide what’s important to them. (They already have these engines build/tested in other Toyota’s/Lexus) I agree, it doesn’t know what it want me to be when it grows up.

    First of all I understand that the EPA regulations and all types of governments are making Toyota and other companies move to new types of vehicles. Second, Toyotas is the best because they know how to deal with customers with quality vehicles. And third, this generation number four will be a serious test because even though the third generation had and continues to have its problems (you already stated) it’s still is the best. That’s why I have one. So this fourth generation with his new modifications better hold up for at least another seven good years.

      Don’t do it. I have a 2021 6-speed manual. I’ll NEVER have to worry about my turbo going out…. ‘Cause… my… Taco… doesn’t… have… one…
      That’s the thing folks fail to recognize - eventually, EVERY turbo goes out. So if you buy one of these, you’d better go ahead and set aside at LEAST $2000 to get that turbo replaced when it goes out.
      Again, not a matter of if but WHEN that turbo WILL go out.

    Engine…. Engine.. Engine.. some things are best left alone. sorry they should’ve left the 6 cylinder in the Tacoma. like the 8 in the Tundra. as good as Toyota is i just don’t trust those engines over the long haul particularly for The reliable Toyota.

    Just bought a 2023 Tacoma with the V6 engine with only 3k miles on it (practically brand new)

  • @bikebudha01
    @bikebudha01 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    They did not fix the "view out the front"... Look at the 5:17 mark. Look how high the dash is relative to this reviewers eye/line of sight out the front. This setup prevents you from seeing what's directly in front of the truck. Like your kid in your driveway.... The hood is waaay to high on this vehicle (or the seat is way too low)... Dangerous...

    • @phillipgrandison2384
      @phillipgrandison2384 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's the impression I got after riding in one. The seats are low like a Vette or go cart with legs stretched forward, and dash up high.

      @@phillipgrandison2384 Yeah, I was in the market for a new truck in 2022. I WANTED a new toyota. Primarliy because I wanted a manual transmission, and toyota is the only option (jeeps don't count, crap quality). But I sat in a brand new 22' toyota, and dam, the seating position was brutal. The view out was terrible. Ended up going with a Ridgeline. 20k miles later, I could not be happier with my choice.

    You know that the tiny turbo won’t have the same longevity as the V6 , and Toyota parts are $$$expensive. It’s too bad that all of the other improvements don’t matter when considering that puny power plant. I’m haven’t drunk the Toyota Kool Aid. I’ll stick with my 7.3 F250 for at least another 400,000 miles.

    Looks like Toyota funded this video. If the old Tacoma was so underpowered, how did it achieve such a great status in resale, and such as the retailers like to always point out? They would’ve never sold so many of them if it was truly an issue. But now the Toyota has come out with a screeching four-cylinder with the turbo wanted to probably won’t endure nearly as long as the old engine. All of a sudden this is the better engine …all marketing.
