Medieval Italy was something like ancient Greece. All one nation divided in many states fighting against each other.

@@youraveragepizzaenjoyer4575 not true. Mycenaean greece consisted of several kingdoms who formed what we would call an alliance. For example Menelaus was the king of Sparta, Odysseus tge king of Ithaca etc. But they did have a common identinty.

Depends who you defeat. War however you put it, and not getting into morals or anything like that, is a massive expense and not always worth it economically even if you win because sometimes you just can't get that much out of it.

@@vigneshsajith It's more because of the selling of arms than the military action, after all the USA wisely entered both WW towards the end, and after that had no real major victory, if anything all subsequent wars ended in a messy nothing (with the partial exception of Korea)

Richard himself claimed to Genoa repubblic ships and the flag to arrive in Holy Land; he knew that with that flag no one could attack him during the trip (except Venice probably).
Even though Genoa borrowed him ships and flag, Richard and the entire english monarchy had stopped to pay its debt after 1771 for the possession of the flag.
Yeah you have a 250 years old debt to pay to Genoa and Italy

You forgot to show the Greek Islands under Genoese Rule as well. For instance, I'm an ethnic Greek, who has Genoese ancestry from the Gatelusian Dynasty on Lesvos, which lasted over 100 years. My surname is a hellenicised version of the Italian name Francoglio, which is more prominent in Northwestern Italy.

I always get a sense that Venice was more "true Roman" than Genoa. I mean, Venice was untouched by the Lombard invasion of Byzantine Italy while the rest of Italy fell, with Genoa being amomg the first cities to fall.

Also, Genoa invented jean (the fabric). And sailors from its navy were equipped with bluish trousers made of it.
The word "jean" probably come from french "Gênes" that means Genoa.
Later, the city of Nîmes, trying to reproduce it, developed instead another similar fabric that became known as denim (AKA "de Nim", "from Nîmes").

In Istanbul (Costantinople) there's the Galata Tower, made by genoese, because they had the entire Galata quartier
Doge is not the italian for Duke. Duke in italian is Duca. Doge ( just like Duca or Duce - the name with witch Mussolini wanted to be called) is a word derived from the latin verb "Ducere", that means "to lead". Another famous italian military word of the renaissance times is "condottiero", that also derives from the latin "Con-Ducere" ("to lead with").
Doge is used in italian only to designate the head of the Republic of Venice.

Don't forget that Genoa tried to be recognized as Kingdom since XVII century, appointing "Holy Mary" as queen and the Doge as Her "deputy".

The word "doxe" (doge) is really a Venetian language word. In Standard Italian the word for "duke" is "duca" and "duce" means "leader".
You are a bit worong because (i am italian) duca or duce doesn't mean leader but in 1939 Benito Mussolino was called the "duce d'italia" (duke of italy) but it was only a surname and duce or duca mean a nobil person and lot's of them was lived in Toscana Lazio Genova Venezia and Valle d'Aosta

2:47 doge is a local(venetian) form of the latin 'dux' (commander/guide) which inspired 3 words in Italian :the "duce" (i presume all of know who it was), the "doge" (the head of state of Venice) and the "duca" which is the actual translation of duke (I don't want to be a grammar nazi or something like that, it was to make you learn a little bit of Italy an Italian language)

peppers (Capsicum) came from America and weren't part of the eastern spice trade.
the kind of peppers the Venetian merchants would have brought from Constantinople would have been black-pepper kernels (Piper) wholly unrelated to the American peppers.

“War is not usually good for business...” As corporates of factories that produce weapons, armaments and such. War is good for business depending on which spectrum you look at it. US probably profited a lot in WWII from the shipments the UK and other countries ordered ;P

Great video but Ragusa never was owned by Venice (except from 1000-1030) or was considered an "italian" state. Ragusa or Dubrovnik as it's called today was almost it's entire history an independent republic owing to their diplomatic skills and balancing between great powers. In fact they were the greatest rival to Venice in the Adriatic after the fall of Zadar (p.s. where i live ) in the 4th crusade.

If I recall correctly, the authors of Why Nations Fail argued that Venice's command economy at first enabled extremely quick growth, but later resulted in increased corruption and inefficiency, ultimately leading to the collapse of the Venetian Empire.
I'd like to hear other viewpoints.
I caught that too. Of course a degree in economics from a liberal university would teach that perspective but it is unlikely that command and control ever works over the long term.
@@gregk2369 Precisely the authors' intent. The same thing happened in the USSR: Quick and short growth followed by stunted economic activity.
Actually Venetian empire didn't "collapse". Venice was still holding part of the gains of the 4th Crusade when the Republic was ended by Napoleon. What made it "fail" is the marginalization of the eastern Mediterranean due to the switch of trade balance to the Atlantic. Without trade revenues, Venice could more or less mantain the balance with the Ottoman Empire (whose strenght was declining for the same reason) but no more keep the pace with the other western European nations.
