    I think the reason why they don't turbocharge it is because it would cannibalize some sales of the WRX.

    • @kabloosh699
      @kabloosh699 8 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      I don't completely get that logic.
      The WRX is a AWD 4 door sedan. The BRZ is a 2 door RWD car. They aren't real competitors.
      Besides, they would still be making money off a car. Just make more BRZ's to match the increased demand and slow down on the WRX. The WRX is in dire need of a refresh anyways. All its true competitors are beating the hell out of it when it comes to style and performance.

    • @roberttrout1159
      @roberttrout1159 8 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      they won't turbo because they're a duo with toyota.. if Subaru releases a turbo brz Toyota has all the right to Subaru's turbo technology
      I believe the only loophole is if Toyota does a proper full turbo 86 first 👍

    I bought a 2018 BRZ early June. I was regretting it in the beginning because it was my first manual but I got the hang of it now and I absolutely love it. Manual is thoughtless now almost and the car is fun as hell. Not super comfy for longer trips (3-4+ hours).
    Great car overall

    • @MohitSharma-if1bg

      @@DamianM1k Mm well there's a difference between learning it and getting decent at it. I would say took me few thousand KMs to learn it and then maybe at 15000 KM I can say I got decent at it. Maybe took me longer than it might take others. I'm now 85000 KM in and my clutch is still going for what it's worth.

    So many people argueing that this car has low hp, cheap interior and still sell expensive. And many comparing this to other car like mustang, golf, focus, you name it. You simply can't compare them with other as they do a totally different job. This is not a muscle car, it is built purposely to different driving experience. And I think Japanese car maker finally go back to their roots, just like the AE86 or other JDM car. They are not as powerful, but they are the perfect platform for mod just like you would on JDM car. This car is a ninja, small power yet agile. And this car will perform very well in Japan, a small country with lots of mountain road. Bottom line, I wouldn't mind about slow accel or top speed, I mind about cornering speed. Plus I wouldn't be driving crazy fast in my daily life.

The EA888 is a superb engine, but VW isn't giving the USA the latest technology version of that engine in anything; not in the Golf R, not in the Audi S3, nothing. Plus this RWD platform will always be more entertaining, but not nearly as practical as the GTI.

      Two reasons why they won't.
      One, they have a contract with Toyota so they can't make a higher end model than the Toyota version. Two, most importantly, it would outperform their WRX STI line and would essentially kill it.

      Exactly, just like what Porsche almost did with the Cayman to the 911. They had to come back on the power because the mid engine layout ended up performing better than the rear engine layout. Could you imagine all the WRX fans that would jump ship if they could have a car that handles better and has the same power as an STI?

I understand it is a sports car , and alcantara inserts gives it that traditional sporty feel, but leather is more premium .

      If they fixed anything with this car, I would have imagined that would be the first. The second would be to give it a better transmission as it's the undeniable weak link of these cars. People with high hp 86's are constantly searching for a substitute for the crap Aisin tranny. It's capable of about 210tq and that's about it. Sometimes you get lucky and have no issues, powershifting or clutch dropping with sticky tires and higher hp is almost sure to grenade the trans.

    Things not stated, yet I'd like to know:
    Is the steering improved somewhat in the 2017 model ?
    Is there denser foam than last year in upper portion of driver's door...(that's where I rest my elbow on long trips) ?
    Is the green cruise control on light still in the left binnacle...where it's hard to see when driving ?
    Loved your detailed review. I own a 2015 FRS, now with just over 36,000 miles. Zero problems with the car so far. Best car I've ever owned. Thinking of upgrading to 2017 BRZ, once I figure out if it's worth my while to do so. Like both the exterior and interior of the 2017 BRZ better than the 2017 Toyota 86.

      I think the steering felt about the same as the 2015 BRZ I tested last year, like the smaller size wheel and leather on the new 2017 model more. The upper door panel feels softer now, it may be the combination of nicer leather, and perhaps softer padding. The cruise control indicator light has been moved to the 4.2" LCD display, but you must get the Limited to get this, the Premium model will have the same instrument cluster as your 2015 model.

    I know it drives great (I've driven 3 of the pre-refreshed ones), but it needs more torque. Most people are often not in places where you can exploit what is fun about this car, so it needs to be a little more exciting in a straight line to be great. Until then, it's a bit too expensive. At least this one looks A LOT better than the '17 Toyota version.

Flawless paint, upgraded interior and audio. I've already put suspension, wheels/tires and it's probably one of the 10 sexiest cars where I live.

    Needs forced induction.Not really all that cheap.
    Up here at altitude where I stay , even the cheapest most basic turbo hot hatch dusts these things off.
    Around 280-315 bhp these things make a lot of sense I'd reckon.

    I love the exterior styling but I feel sorry that most will never know what it's like to drive a true sports car. In a true sports car, Less is More. It's about driving, it's about feel, it's not about electronics, it's not about creature comforts, it's not about the car driving for you. Think MGB,
    Triumph spitfire, Alpha Romeo and a plethora of other pre-1980,s sports cars.

    People keep saying that it "needs more power", but what some people may not understand is if it had more power, the car would have to be heavier and therefore bigger. You can always mod it, yes, but then if you mod the engine you're gonna need to mod the differential, and your chassis, and your tires etc... So for a relatively light car, it has more than enough power for what it is.

    So this is the first video of yours I've watched, and I appreciate the video but I honestly had to give up watching at the halfway mark because the "Subscribe" popup every 30-40 seconds is REALLY distracting and super frustrating on a 23 minute long video. Just once at the beginning and once at the end is plenty - if you're super bothered about always having that "subscribe" reminder, maybe integrate it as a static part of your logo or something? It's just really, really distracting to have it keep popping up and disappearing.
    Not trying to hate or anything, just wanted to offer some constructive criticism, your production quality and actual content is great otherwise.

      Roddy Dykes without a tune the characteristics of the band won’t change. Just adding intake or exhaust will give more power (maybe) but it won’t change the torque dip or HP peak range.

    It took me OVER A YEAR to get used to the throttle in the BRZ. But once I realized what Subaru wanted of the driver and why it's like this, it was a GAME CHANGER.
    Basically, they wanted this car to be a "slow" city commuter with amazing fuel economy (for the era), hence the torque dip in the lower-middle of the rev range.
    They ALSO wanted you to turn into a Formula 1 pro (and did their best to make you feel like it) when you hit a corner or a country road.
    You need to keep the car screaming at 5000+ RPM floor it to 7400 out of a corner and then powershift up and then down every corner - sometimes two gears in 2 seconds! You MUST NOT try to floor the gas in 3rd at 4000 RPM. Do the work.
    It's a car that forces you to learn to drive like a pro and rewards you with some of the rawest, most agile, and thrilling driving experience on the entire market.
    Sadly, so many dumb people (like myself) and even reviewers try to drive it after getting out of a TDI or a Supra and then complain it doesn't pull.
    Subaru, I understand now. I understand why they forced you to change the BRZ in 2021. Thank you for making it in the first place.

      Yes, but there is only so much power you can get from a low-cost 2.0L 4 cylinder engine. Toyota and Subaru will have allocated how much they are happy to spend on manufacturing the engine for 86 twins (plus balanced that against concerns for emissions and buyer demands for fuel economy), and this is it.

    The car looks good but still has the same issue that they had since the beginning. 200hp is kinda a joke especially with not offering even a gt or ss type of version. Would love to see it come turbo charged or with a good v6. Needs to be closer to 300hp for the price. I will stick to the mustang. 305hp for the same price with still better build quality and an actual back seat that you can use. The BRZ and FRS still need to be improved greatly. Also quit lieing saying you would buy this car for the fines. Again the mustang and camaro drive the same or better. Especially the newer mustang can beat the crap out of this thing.

      Considering the fact that the Mustang and Camaro weigh roughly 700 pounds more than this car, they definitely do NOT drive the same. Sure, the two pony cars have more power, but power isn't everything. Some drivers prefer the light and nimble feel of the BRZ and when that is what you like, the Ford and Chevy feel like clunky and overweight. The beauty about a car like this is that you can utilize all its capabilities in the real world, without fear of crashing or getting into trouble with the law. Cars with too much power are no fun when you are driving it in commuter traffic.

      Your response is pretty lacking. "Use all its capabilities in the real world" . Sounds like your trying to justify the car to much. Also saying they way 700lbs more makes them feel clunky. Have you actually driven then. The new Mustang has a full independent suspension and drives like a true road car. Yes horsepower isn't everything. You want a good power to weight ratio with a good balanced weight vehicle to enjoy it. The real fact is. Your saying a car that has 100 hp less than a stock Camaro and Mustang. Shouldn't be bought and get this at the same price point with less build quality. At the price and build quality this car should be in the high teens. Not the mid 20s. I'm sorry but the value per dollar isn't there. The only true reason to buy a car lacking hp where it was suppose to count it to get really good mpg. At least in the 30mpg range. Which again the Mustang and Camaro both get 30 mpg on the highway. I really was hoping the car would be a lot better. I was planning on buying one until I checked it out. Cheap build and lack of power. It's not much better than my older corolla from 2007. Give good honest reviews not what your paid to say. Then you will gain legitimacy. Oh just to let you know. I am a fan of Toyota products and Subaru products. They make some great products. But to be truly competitive in the class they were aiming for. The quality and horsepower needs a nudge. This is my true and honest opinion backed with facts.

      This guy danny cannon has never really driven anything if he thinks the new mustang feels anything like the brz lol

    • @dannycannon3793
      @dannycannon3793 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Aaron Brooks I never said the mustang drives like the BRZ. If you read the comments redline said the mustang drives with clunky steering. I very much disagree with that. I have driven many mustang. Besides being a mustang owner myself. Yes the older mustangs did drive like crap. Just like most older american muscle cars. The main discussion was about. Redline saying that a BRZ is the best value for its price class. Which in my opinion is not even close.The BRZ has no power and lacks good build quality for the price. For the price of the BRZ I was comparing it to the Mustang ECOboost. Which is a far superior car for the same price. With the ecoboost it keeps the weight way down so body roll is very much limited like the BRZ. Lastly I have driven a whole lot of vehicles. Everything from toyota, hyundai, mercedes, jaguar, bmw, and so on. Besides owning many different brands and models throughout the years. I used to work as a mechanic at a few car shops and automotive dealerships. I also did look at getting a BRZ or FRS at one point. But just like I stated before its simply lacking for the price.

    next car for me...miata, brz, or mustang. The reason I have a mustang in my list is because I love the sounds they make (esp. with a full exhaust system.) We will see what the future holds.
