Today, March 2, 2018, I am celebrating my first year anniversary as a vegan. One year ago I was 235 pounds with a bmi of 37 (obese). I had diabettes and high blood pressure for which I was taking drugs. On the last day in February 2017 I watched Forks over Knives, a documentary on how our food is produced and how harmful it is. The next day I went to an all-you-can-eat restaurant (golden coral) and ate every vegetable or whole food I saw. During the next 60 days I lost 33 pounds, stopped all medications as my blood glucose was normal as was my blood presssure .I had stopped eating all animal products - beef, chicken, eggs, diary, fish, butter etc.etc. I did stop losing weight but saw in retrospect that I was still eating processed (packaged) foods which I cut out and lost another 22 pounds in the following two months. I had gone from 235 to 170 - a whopping 65 pounds. It had been a decade or longer since I was below 200 pounds. I am 77 years of age. As I live alone in the Oregon outback in an off-grid home I built myself I used videos like this as my support group. There are at least a dozen doctors posting videos that recommend a plant based "diet" and cutting out processed foods because they are loaded with addictive substances like salt, sugar and oils. Transitioning into a plant-based diet is the best decision I've ever made. I have never felt better. Big thanks to these brave doctors questioning a system riddled with politics and big money.
It is not only him, but nevertheless... This diet is really powerful, but being ignored by mainstream community, maybe because of FDA and Department of Agriculture influence. Regular doctors try to make a point, but it seems that they are not allowed to say bluntly: "switch to plant based food only".

Six months ago is when I went plant based and I've also lost 30 pounds, yet I'm never hungry. No pain meds anymore! I owe these doctors my life! So happy to hear about someone else who kicked this dreaded disease! 🙂
@Joan Morley Please use a b12 supplement, the bacteria that create b12 in our gut are deep down "there" if you know what i mean. There your colon doesn't absorb b12.

Congrats!!! I never thought I could lose weight without counting calories! I struggled with my weight since I was 20 and now at 40 I'm healthier than ever!!
Dr. Barnard’s date of birth is July 10, 1953. At the time of this comment he was freshly 67. This lecture was August 5, 2015. So he had just turned 62. He looks good for 52.
Even as an amateur endurance athlete, I became so fascinated by my rapid weight loss when I changed my diet, that i AVOIDED working out to see what would happen. Nothing happened but the weight kept falling off. It's the INPUT side--just as Dr. Barnard tells us here. But one should exercise for overall health -and- mental benefits! It's just not absolutely necessary for weight loss. Eating mostly low density/high nutrition foods IS.
Inspiring, brilliant. Dr Barnard is one of the giants in this field and I so appreciate all his work and his commitment to spreading the word. Thank you, Dr Barnard. Thank you, Aspen Institute.

Just hearing Dr.Barnard's voice makes me smile! :) I wish he would come to Ireland and travel around giving several talks.. I have noticed vegan groups have become more and more popular in Ireland though which is really good. And there was this recent presentation given there about farming, search youtube for "The Best We Have To Offer? | Inside Ireland's “Humane” Farming"
Fun little fact, at my job we are doing music videos. We saw how my skin was compared to my collegue which are not vegan when being close to the camera. (See The Vitamin B12 Issue by Dr. Gina Shaw; Vegan Vitamin B12 Deficiency is a Myth by Cindy Jones-Shoeman; and Vitamin B12 Deficiency-the Meat-Eaters’ Last Stand by Dr. John McDougall, M.D.) These bacteria also exist in the soil. So you can let your body produce it naturally, which is what we all do, or eat some UNWASHED, ORGANIC vegetables once in a while. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reports that 39% of Americans have low levels of B12. If only 1% of Americans are vegan, how can a B12 deficiency be a vegan issue? After 16 years of practicing veganism without taking a single vitamin, I had my B12 level checked on October 24, 2012. It was 543 pg/mL. The normal range is between 271-870 pg/mL. My level is perfect because the human body needs just three micrograms of B12 per day.
Um, is Neal Barnard really 63? Because he looks 20 years younger... Nottin wrong with ageing but whatever he's doing certainly seems to be slowing it down...
Kerry McCarpet diet is mostly the reason. He may also be blessed with good genes too. But mostly is diet. Everyone I know looks younger and have more energy under a vegan diet.
That's not what I've seen of people who are vegan. Veganism typically results in lessened body integrity, depending on the details of what 'vegan foods' they're eating. I find starches not so healthy for me, generally. Vegetable/seed oils also. So, if one is only eating fruits and vegetables,… that typically doesn't work out well either. But, as long the starches consumed are minimal or infrequent, and of particular well suited types for ones body, then they're ok,… along with fresh fruits(rarely dried), greens, other vegetables(non-starchy),.. and then animal flesh, eggs, cheese, raw milk, kefir, yogurt, beer,…… all that prudently consumed keeps my young and fresh at age 50,…. veganism leads to quicker aging,… although over - consumption of any 'diet' will lead to quicker aging. The main thing with veganism is that it's not adequately balanced for human body integrity,… good solid integrity. Diet is a balance,…. to keep prime with. I consume for body integrity and performance,… and it's 'prudent omnivorism',… and it keeps me young. Veganism brings about more wrinkles sooner, because the body doesn't get enough of what it needs to keep well-toned and suitably 'filled'. Btw, I'm 6'4" x 180. I'm slender,… and I've always been that way,… and I've been very keen on the whole diet-health-disease matter since 1984(age 16),… and even interest earlier. Keep well oxygenated,… quality animal flesh and greens are great staples of the diet,… along with the other fundamental foods,… particularly fruits,… and for many populations throughout history, from Europe, Asia, and Africa,… dairy products. MMMMmmmm, they're good for me, if they're quality,… and not homogenized.
He looks like my 86 year old African grandpa. They only eat meat once or twice a year if they are lucky. Our generation has really gone off what our ancestors ate.
Doc Neal Barnard, you are so amazingly great at teaching this stuff. The world needs that. I needed that. I have you on my list of heroes. I am a big fan! Thank You Gina and Jerry Murdock for founding the Aspen institute and thank you Dr Bernard for the valuable data that I plan to put to use in my daily life, You are all so Very Awesome right now especially in these uncertain times
I have shared this and shared this and I'll continue to do so. I have the utmost respect for Dr. Barnard. I've listened to him speak many times (thanks TH-cam and those who record him). I've listened to him debate the benefits of plant-based living partnered with Gene Baur (Farm Sanctuary). Superb debate, excellent moderator. The con side was a young meat industry expert and an some organization leader who owns & operates a family organic "happy animal" farm. Gene & Neil had me standing, clapping, and giving praise alone in my living room!! :) And the moderator did not let the con side take it personal. Omnis don't like when you point out their flawed way of thinking. I know people & have family with health issues proven to be erased by a plant-based diet. Type-2, cholesterol, early-dementia, and Alzheimer's. I vow to keep Dr. Barnard in the face of those I know and love. THEY could use a boost of life in their unhealthy bodies. Thanks again for sharing this informative presentation. And with Q&A at the end!
Notice how he never gets out of breath speaking. That's not something you see with other doctors. He practices what he preaches and I appreciate that so much.
Bravo, Dr. Barnard, for including laudatory references to other researchers in the field, and for including some practical suggestions to help people get more sleep. Sleep management is such a helpful adjunct to good nutrition and exercise! It boosts mood, speeds recuperation, "knits up the raveled sleeve of care." The sleep you desire is the sleep your body and mind needs. I lecture on dreams and problem solving and try never to forget to give people permission and motivation to get enough sleep.
Your english is so clear.... i have noticed that Neal never stutters, never hang in seconds when thinking or remembering words...you look very young & yummy.. these are indications dr.neal is perfectly healthy..
Fantastic speech! I just had a massive plate full of veg and potatoes and felt great. Stupidly i had a donut and felt heavy, sick and like crap...suffice to say i binned them and will stick with my celery!
I disagree that "most doctors" are on his side. The medical industry benefits from all those illnesses, prescriptions, and appointments. Most doctors don't talk about diet and body fat, they talk about pills, dosages, and procedures.
One year ago my BP was 190 over110, GP wanted me to take drugs. Added green juice, no meat, no eggs no dairy my blood pressure is now 109 over 70. GP is worried about my vegan life?
What an amazing speaker ! I wish we had more dedicated lifestyle doctors such as Dr. Barnard and Dr. Greger in France... You guys are an inspiration for the little plant-based high schooler that i currently am :) Thank you for everything that you are doing.
What a gentle giant of a man. Entertaining & educational. Thank you & pcrm for all the good you in the world. Watching this in Brussels. Peace, love & health to all..
My biggest fear is Alzheimer's, even though I eat so healthy there is no chance I could get it. It still scares the shit out of me. I am such a big fan of Dr. Barnard because he is honest, patient, and respectable, as well as informative. I can relate very well with him. Excellent presentation, but I would ass one thing. You showed the donuts, and talked about trans fats, yet all animal products contain some trans fat as well (unless maybe skim milk? But there is much else to worry about there still). A person eating a heavy animal-based diet will undoubtedly consume much more than the lower limit, and most likely, meet or surpass the high threshold.
just wow. incredible articulate speech. thank you for bringing this to light. I do agree the 21 days does change your taste your buds. I enjoy my food like never before xo
Just watched this for the first time, i.e., today, 9/12/2020, and I was impressively blown away by the wealth of knowledge. I WANT TO LIVE! I will be making significant life changes. Biggups, Dr. Neal Bernard!!
This is the first that I've heard Neal Barnard speak, or, for that matter that I've ever even of heard of him. Some thirty-five plus years ago I began living with these dietary principles and practices, and they brought me back from a great deal of ill health, disorders, and potential disorders. I also studied macrobiotics formally for six months and personally witnessed several people diagnosed with terminal and even metastasized cancer experience complete remission and cleanse themselves of it when they acknowledged and gave in to their true nature as a herbivore. Much of these understandings have been lost over the years, so much so that people I mention the term macrobiotics to, have no idea what it is. However, I've unearthed some of these practices and principles in a book of my own that I'm obviously not at liberty to direct you to here. Well past my middle years (I'm older than Dr. Barnard), I have no aches or pains - take no medications or pharmaceuticals of any kind - play basketball with much the same agility as I did forty plus years ago, and have none of the ravages of so-called aging that others in my age bracket experience. I have been strictly vegetarian/vegan or macrobiotic at other times in my life, but I do have chicken or fish twice a week on two designated evenings; not because I think it's necessary, but only because the added bulk helps prevent me from farting like a horse. Thanks Doc Barnard. I'm glad there's some of us left, and I'm glad you're in the position to get the word out. I don't have MD following my name. Also - other than not mentioning that the Maasai are sustained somewhat due to the enhanced circumference of their arteries, by their tremendous amount of physical activity (something I'm sure you're aware of), your illustrating the misnomer concerning their diet to health relationship ,was dead on. Thanks again.
I been listening to his video's almost every night. I have been Plant Based for a month and 2 weeks now. I have been eating, pasta's, beans, potato's, Veggies, and minimum fat. My sugar level is at 90-116. When I strayed a couple of days of eating chicken and cheesy pepperoni pizza. My sugar level went up 127. I had almost went off. But got back on. The next day I had 3 hashbrown patties in my airfryer, 1 apple with PB, 2 soft pretzels with vegan mayo, homemade flatbread and some homemade pasta with black beans. The next day I checked my sugar level. It was lowered to 101. So I see the difference. I do believe that cheese and meats can raise it up. So I am sticking with Plant Based. :) My mom still believes that the more carbs you eat it raises your SL. I don't see that.
Fantastic video! Just what I needed. I am buying his book today. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and experience in an easy to understand and helpful way.
Taran Navy, Watch Forks Over Knives on Netflix, and/or read "The China Study" by Dr T. Colin Campbell. Once you see what milk and cheese do to the human body, it is easy to say goodbye.
Just an excellent, excellent presentation. He kept my attention through the whole video. Very knowledgeable, speaks to layman level, funny. Learned alot and very impressed. Just found this site Oct. 2021. Transforming to Vegan at 66 years of age. Thank you. Watching from Canada.❤
I'm so blessed to have found your videos on my feed. Certainly, this must be my warning sign. Gotta change my eating habits. Y'all are such a blessing ❤️ thanks for sharing 🤙🏽
I follow a ketogenic diet with high fat, moderate protein and a lot of vegetables. Basically the Wahls Protocol. It's good to see another point of view and Dr. Barnard is a great speaker but I was previously a vegetarian (though for only 6 months) and the ketogenic diet has been better for me in almost all respects. From an ethical point of view I understand the need to cut back on animal products but keep in mind that individuals have varied responses to different diet approaches and there is no "one size fits all".
I lost about 21 pounds in about 6 months. I now weigh 101 and I feel healthy and happy. I am still trying to kick my sugar habit but overall, my diet has improved immensely!
Fruit and starches are all broken down into sugar in the body -> Glucose = Sugar. Just prioritize whole carbs but you seriously won’t do much bad with some sugar. Means you need more carbs.
@@giladkingsley - The data shows a vegan diet is just as bad as the standard American diet. Vegans don't live any longer and are prone to dementia and heart disease.
This is the best video I have seen thus far and I have watched a lot of videos over the last year. Especially because, Dr Barnard is not pushing any supplements or stores. Unrelated but probably relevant, when watching cooking shows, I look at the presenter and see if they look healthy and energetic for their age. While not a scientific test, it is possibly a good indicator. If someone is way overweight and not looking healthy then I should probably not eat what they recommend. Thank you and stay well. 🌲🌝☘️
I highly recommend the diet this doctor advocates im a living example coming from the islands and being in poverty we mostly eat vegetables everyday multiple times a day. I carry that diet with me here in the US and maintain my Blood Pressure at around 110/70 and im 46.
I May add i still eat meat occasionally but in very little quantity just a few bites then i eat fruits that helps digest and flush it out of my system faster. It’s hard to totally go full vegan when you have to serve family members meat as they don’t want to switch to vegetarian !
If everyone turned vegan, what would happen to the animals? Kill them off? They're the only things that have ever kept the soil pliable and alive. Machines are killing the land and turning to dust. It will soon end up in the ocean along with all the toxins they spray with it.
How does Dr. Barnard exercise? I just watched Brenda Davis's video on raw vegan diets (it's good, you'll probably learn something new, and more than once). Toward the end she shows her exercise schedule. She exercises a lot, and with a lot of variety. Healthy, vigorous, frequent exercise goes hand-in-hand with a healthy diet. Both are important. They are partners in creating a high level of health.
This doctor is necessary in a country like India where dairy and oils are consumed excessively and the rates of diabetes, hypertension and alzheimer's disease are growing rapidly.

She became a doctor and she said she didn’t learn about any of this in medical school! Look up Goodbyelupus.com. Debbi

He doesn't talk about weighing food, which is taught in 4th grade, and is practiced by all grocery stores. He has ways of using volume and guessing for food consumption.

Malnourish diet? Name the essential nutrient we cannot get from plants?
Let me guess... b12.
So your saying that we should consume animal products ( that are not even a good source of b12 unless fortified like milk) to get b12..
What about the data demonstrating a direct linear relationship between LDL levels and plaque developement in the arteries ( atherosclerosis )
Also i would like to point out thqt the only qnimals that we can cause atherosclerosis in is herbivores and the only proven way to do this ( can replicate it infinite amount of times ) is to feed them diets high in dietary cholesterol OR saturated fat but HEERRRDURRR WE ARE CARNIVORES, HERRDURRRR.
Let me guess, your going to dismiss the link between LDL levels and plaque developed or clearing..
I hope you have some clinnical intervention studies to demonstrate why you can dismiss this science.
And im just talking qbout atherosclerosis, what aboug all the other mechanisms that get activated when you consume those foods? Dismiss that data too?

Transitioning into a plant-based diet is the best decision I've ever made. I have never felt better. Big thanks to these brave doctors questioning a system riddled with politics and big money.
Dr. Neal Barnard... This guy is going to change me and my familie's lives.
I always enjoy listening to Dr. Barnard speak. His delivery is as good as the information he gives.
Why this guy didn´t win a Nobel prize yet for his 2003 intervention study with Dr. Jenkins? That study can and actually is saving lives as we speak.
Because this ruins of completely useless bad guys....
It is not only him, but nevertheless... This diet is really powerful, but being ignored by mainstream community, maybe because of FDA and Department of Agriculture influence. Regular doctors try to make a point, but it seems that they are not allowed to say bluntly: "switch to plant based food only".

@Joan Morley Please use a b12 supplement, the bacteria that create b12 in our gut are deep down "there" if you know what i mean. There your colon doesn't absorb b12.

If it's ideal then why do you need to supplement with B12?
Eric May we should have had you in the audience to ask such a great question‼️
@@ericmay7722 This vitamin comes from bacteria that live in our mouth and intestines.
@@ericmay7722 who cares? If you get better results with the pill from the diet change, what’s wrong with that ?
Um, is Neal Barnard really 63? Because he looks 20 years younger... Nottin wrong with ageing but whatever he's doing certainly seems to be slowing it down...
He looks his age. He does not look early 40's. He could pass for mid 50's at the youngest. I'm 50, and he looks well older than me.

Wow, what a talented speaker Dr Neal Barnard is, and his message is fantastic.

Any trans and saturated fat is bad
Trans fat is made in the laboratory. It doesn't exist in nature.

Wish me a good luck, I've just start my journey as vegetarian 🥰
I needed this tonight. Fell off the wagon recently. Your talk has encouraged me to get back on the vegan way.

Still one of the best talks regarding nutrition on YT. Dr. Barnard is a living legend!!!

It’s hard to totally go full vegan when you have to serve family members meat as they don’t want to switch to vegetarian !
Exercise & Vegan is the way to go.
@@viveviveka2651 Spends a lot of time on the loo I expect. 🤣
This doctor is necessary in a country like India where dairy and oils are consumed excessively and the rates of diabetes, hypertension and alzheimer's disease are growing rapidly.
Dr Bernard is so cute I might go vegan
Live long and prosper
