If you enjoyed this conversation with Lael you'll love my chat with Vegan Cyclist about his crazy Impossible Route Adventures th-cam.com/video/0aejoSCmYsU/w-d-xo.html
I love that you almost NEVER see her without a giant smile on her face! You watch her in any bit of media and it's there. Its contagious. I'm grinning constantly watching stuff about her.
Great conversation! Lael is such a positive person to watch and follow. I don't expect much from social media anymore; ignore it as much as I can. Haters be hatin'!
My favourite cyclist to listen to barr none. So positive, so much joy and happiness with a smile that never quites. I love her advice about "if your not having fun change your plans". I have done this more then a few times and I've never regretted it long term
Anthony, thank you for this interview! I just found Lael Wilcox on TH-cam last week and have been watching her interviews and her videos with amazement and awe. I loved this interview and especially the part about your father and using an E-Bike to go bike camping. I want to do that too when it is safe for me. I was a cyclist 35 years ago and rode centuries and daily training routes but then I had a family and a mortgage so work and the family took all my time. The timing is perfect because I am 67 years old, I just retired to improve my health and I need to lose 100lbs. I’ve been riding my old Bridgestone MB-4 in a kicker snap as an indoor trainer and feeling great, losing weight. I built an E-Bike adding a Mid drive by Bfang to my 2002 KHS full suspension MTB years ago but never really got going with work being so busy. As soon as I can safely ride it I will be on the trails again I used to ride without peddle assist and if I get worn out I just let the 17.5 AH 59V battery bring me home. Thank you for the inspiration and I wish you and your Father happiness and success!!
Very excited to watch/listen to this one, I’ve followed Lael for a while now and I just admire everything about this woman, both as a person and as an athlete. I find her take on cycling and life inspirational in the widest possible sense - I believe she lives as more people should strive to live
I’m sat on my sofa listening to one of the most inspiring cyclist in the world, planning in my head a ride because i am so inspired by her energy and talent. Suprised to hear the criticism she’s received. She’ll still blow them away. She’s wow. Just a fab female role model.
43:30 I'm glad to hear that. I use a light motor ebike for long rides with minimal power support and still get hated for it. It's also obvious in kudos counts, not that I care about anyone's opinion, just observations. Same total energy expenditure, same average leg watts, but since there's a motor, it's considered cheating. Sorry for the mememe. I enjoyed the podcast with Lael! She's inspirational and still unbelievable how she manages these ultra-endurance rides!
Thanks for tuning in. If you're getting into bike packing you should check out one of our old interviews . This guy is so crazy but his story is inspiring th-cam.com/video/5-gTHxTCJXk/w-d-xo.html
Really good interview! Lael is awesome! I still watch the 2019 vid "I Just Want To Ride" when they all got stuck at Brush Mountain Lodge. To heck with all the haters! That would not have been filmed, or would have been bits and pieces, if it hadn't been for that media crew.
This was incredible. I always wish people would ask what the recovery after an event of these durations. Do they sleep for 4 days straight? How long until you ride a bike again? Is your Garmin recovery advisor telling you it hates you after a race like that?
As to your question of who is riding the divide, I did it since my company offers a 6 week sabatical for everyone who works there for 5+ years. Also count me among one of the people who was inspired by lael's 2019 documentary to do it.
As an ultra racer I love Lael and all the work she does. Notwithstanding, having crew and loved ones alongside you in an event does bring a huge psychological boost and advantage. Male or female competitor, I still hold this view. Love Lachie Morton, no doubt in my mind having a media crew on his TD run provided a psychological boost.
Taylor was touring in sandals and flat pedals. Lael is a great athlete on her own right. I was riding with her and she doesn't go crazy fast but she "just" keeps moving! And with a smile!

When Lael got shaken down for having a media crew with her, it made me embarrassed to be a cyclist.
That was so ridiculous
I agree!! I even bantered back and forth with the Race Director.
Love this chat ❤. True I started bikepacking cos of Lael

As did I…
Is there a more inspirational, positive, charming, role model than Lael? I very much doubt it. Great job with the interview, Anthony.

That's an amazing incentive within your company.

Just looking at the results and she beat Taylor Phinney by almost 30 hours.
