Thank you to the amazing response to this song in The Netherlands, and now also the USA. This song was inspired by the book "What is the What?" by American writer Dave Eggers. It is about a Sudanese Refugee called Valentino Achak Deng and it is truly one of the most devastating but inspiring books I've ever read. Please read it. And if you want to support the cause and help the ongoing project for his village of Marial Bai in South Sudan, check out www.valentinoac..., please.
The song was originally released last Christmas after being used throughout the annual Radio 3FM charity campaign 'Serious Request' in the Netherlands. Serious Request raised €8,600,000 for Red Cross last year which is incredible. I was truly honoured to be a part of such an amazing campaign and will never forget it. It was also recently used in the American TV show 'Son's Of Anarchy' during a funeral service for a character called Opie, which has generated new interest in the song. I couldn't be happier that more people are hearing this song. Although I'm so excited for this new exposure, and glad people can relate to it in a different context, I'd really love it if people could still remember what the song is truly about. A REAL problem, something that continues to happen and that so many people do not know about.
Thank you so much everyone.
The Lost Boy -
I left my home still as a child
I walked a thousand sorry miles
To wait for my father to gather up his tools
He said my boy you've got to run
Don't wait for me, don't wait for mum
We'll come get you when it's safe for us to move
So I waited many years
Held back the pain behind my tears
For my father to come find me like he said
In that time I was alone
So many years without my home
I made brothers of a different kind instead
At the time I didn't know
Just how hard the wind could blow
Towards disaster, and the things that I would see
I never found my father
I never found my mother either
But I know that in my lifetime I will be
A hero to the masses
To those born without chances
There's a freedom that everyone deserves
I know there's greed and there's corruption
I've seen death and mass destruction
But I'm telling you and I hope that I am heard
I will not be commanded
I will not be controlled
I will not let my future go on, without the help of my soul
Opie was the saddest death in television history... hurt me like a real life family member died.
jax tara and bobby
@@houssamabdelali5314 you were sad about Tara? I was running to my room to get my Daniel Bryan Yes! Chant t shirt and stood in the living room doing the yes! Chant until the ending credits stopped
@@houssamabdelali5314 Bobby hurt
Well said
just watched it now, and goddamn, what an amazing character to lose. damn it.
"I got this"
+Chris Mcknew
the same words jax said when he killed that scumbag
This hit me hard right now! Thanks! Hope you’re doing well 5 years after your comment
Only legends understand the reference
Honestly man I feel like I don't 😔
I can't watch that scene..Opie was absolutely perfect. ❤
im cry like a girl , RIP Opie
+MsTryox yes.. with opie deaths, old jax disappeared .... ant become pure antihero without hearth. Just cold killing machine like Clay. :/ But still left us with style
Me too missy
It's fake no one died it's a show
"I will not be commanded, I will not be controlled. And I will not let my future go on without the help of my soul"
Damn what lyrics!
He loved his kids, and wife, he loved Jax, and he lost all he loved, and gave his life for his best friend, who he considered a brother. He was real to us fans, and always will be, and that shows just how amazing this show really is. R.I.P. Opie.
Come back 😢
Sang this at my brothers funeral. He loved this song. He played it almost every day in the end
RIP OPIE!!
Ain't it funny the way tv can make you like the villain? Opie was a convicted criminal. A gangster, a drug pusher, an adulterer, a woman beater, a murderer, an extortionists and an arsonist.
+Johnnie Ward and a badass
+Johnnie Ward Opie wasn't a woman beater. Jax more so. Ya know. Between the headbutting of Luisa. and the face smashing of Ima. But Opie wasn't a woman beater. R.I.P Opie
this song makes me think of all the shit that's happened to me
Joseph Patterson Opie beat up that stripper.
RIP Harry 'Opie' Winston
The fact that this song only has 631,000 hits while "What does the Fox say" has over 455 million hits just makes me sad for people in general. Looking forward to Greg's next album!
Wow, thanks for mentioning that song. I have honestly never heard of it. So I just checked it out, and now I want to kill myself.
So thanks for that :)
this is a good thing. Let the right people know what's right.
It's a comedic song, check out other stuff from Ylvis - Stonehenge, The Cabin and Massechusets are hillarious.
I saw this on Sons Of Anarchy, Opie's funeral... very fitting!
Nov 2020 still listening!
👇🏼
2k21 too
WOW.THS IS DEEP,VERY DEEP
MAKES ME REMEMEBER AND THINK ...............
Sons of anarchy used this song when they killed off one of the best characters in TV history. Amazing song man! I honestly have problems listening to it without tearing up.
One of the best songs I've ever heard. I literally have: "I will not be commanded. I will not be controlled tattooed on my arm
this song is so powerful and I can only imagine how this song relates and speaks to so many people. I appreciate sons of anarchy for introducing me to this song, but even more I appreciate greg holden and the song for introducing me to the story and book behind the inspiration for the song. Read the book What Is the What by Dave Eggers, and then replay the song. Understand the true meaning and how this song is meant to be projected.
‘ i got this ‘- Opie most powerful line in the drama series
"See you later, brother.."
Thank you Greg,
for making people happy.
Thank you for helping Serious Request with raising money for poor mothers.
Thank you.
Every time I listen to this song it hits me hard. I feel and relate to it so much. 😪😪😪😪😪 beautiful and powerful song. I love it
I agree. I have been listening to him all morning. I haven't listened to a song I do not like yet.
I heard this song on "Sons of Anarchy" and felt in love with it. Is my new top song.
My brother (USMC Sgt.Kenneth D. Reich) and I would watch SOA together. My brother passed away Oct. 30,2012 due to a rare blood cancer. He truly showed that Marine spirit throughout his fight and would not let it control him, although an infection got the best of him in the end. I had this song played at his services for all of his fellow Marine Brothers and Sisters who were unable to make it to his services. Thank you Mr. Holden for this song. It will ALWAYS hold a special place in my heart.
It's nice to still see someone get recognized on talent alone. Thank you SOA for introducing us to this young man.
This song deserves more views and attention!!
I listen to this song at least 10 times per week. I connect to it in many ways. Thanks to SOA I learned of it. #Opie #IGotThis #Bless #Sniper #Master
Salute , to my father sdom
Mr.Al Tate
thanks for the wisdom and many lessons I learned from you.
RIP
A very strong and amazing scene! The actors in SoA is just so very good. You can really see and feel their band.
Rest In Peace Opie!
Went on iTunes and bought this song as soon as I heard it on Sons of Anarchy...what a great song to play for Opie. RIP.
No matter what brought you here, here is where you are, and what you experience from this fine piece of music is your own. I will not count the days, but I will measure them before I put together a song as simple, as vital, and as perfect as this one. Damn well done.
first time i heard about this song was on Sons Of Anarchy, and i fell in love with it.. R.I.P Opie!
I recently decided to re-watch Sons of Anarchy in preparation for the series finale. I've always loved SOA's soundtrack. It's led me to many great artists like Noah Gundersen and The White Buffalo. And now you. I've listened to this song about 30 times today. I have to say, this is one of the greatest and most inspirational songs I've ever heard. As a fellow song writer, I must say, it's songs like these why I write.
You are truly an inspiration. Please keep up the great work.
What a wonderful Song... R.I.P. Opie.. ou will be surely missed... The SOA will never be the same without you......
It's fake no one died..it's a show
The connection I feel with this song is impressive. I appreciate this contribution to our twisted society.
Man, it's 2021 and I'm still here... RIP Opie
It's fake no one died it's a show

Since the first time I saw this video I was addicted. This video speaks to my soul
Greg is a great talent. The lyric is the message. Brilliant writing, great vocal.
Big voice for a smaller styled man.
Anyone in recovery for any addiction can sing this song a million times over.Very powerful !
2 years sober now
Not really
This song couldn't be more perfect !
Rest In Peace Opie !
hi! it is so a amazing song! the first time that i heard it on radio 3FM, i was going look @ youtube for this amazing song and played the rest of the day without a brake! and today again
I have lost somebody really close to me, who always understood me, and was always there for me in my time of need. He sung this at my school production, so this is to him. He had an amazing voice.
Thanks for everything, you'll be sorely missed, I'll never forget you x
I feel you brother
Give this man a second chance. His voice heals my soul and others.
thank you greg for this great song,
i've this song buy ofcource
This is a terrific song, with so many meanings to so many different people in so many different situations. To me, that's the mark of a truly great song. Thank you Mr. Holden
One of the best songs ever. Even though i can admit that alot of feelings stand behind that statement perhaps because its use in Sons of Anarchy there still is no argument about the brilliance of this song. You have my thanks for its existence
And I will not let my future go on,
without the help of my soul !
Amazing.
This song sums up my childhood
Love this song, it could've been about my life. Real music
This song is like a knife. Every once in a while, lightning strikes, and a masterpiece is created. Thank you SOA for leading many of us here.
Gives me chills everytime
Ope brought us all here. The power of great writing and acting
This brings tears to my eyes whenever I hear it. Between the beautiful way the song is carried out and the lyrics themselves, there is no way to make this any more perfect..
RIP OPIE WINSTON just watched the episode what a perfect song!
Pure talent his voice is amazing 😍
it made me cry...I was listening to the song and thinking - wow he's singing about my boys (my kids from Africa) and then I've read the description and it really IS about my kids! and so I cried and cried because it's so beautiful and so true.
I under stand this song so much in wheel of life I rode
Man cant explain where this song takes me
Amazing song
I wish I could give this song 100000000000000 likes. It's just super amazinggggggg....
Sons of anarchy brung me here beautiful song
Occasionally an artist will have a masterpiece come boiling out of them. We are fortunate when this happens. This is that...
Your voice is so soothing! Love to sing this song when I'm alone :)
RIP Opie, brother in arms! Great music!
I can't even tell how many times I've cried while listening to this song.
I can't hold my tears when I listen to this song.
I'm struggling now and try to find a reason to live. But still, it's so damn hard.
This song it's a boost somehow for me!
Thank you!
It’s not to late to love life
I swear every time I hear this song I cry. It's really beautiful.
Amazing. I love the end chant. Gives me chills.
I’m generation x and I’ve never been more proud of what my generation stands for
Just discovered you and your music. Love it!!!
Perfect for Opie. Makes me cry. Beautiful song.
Serious request 2011 Leiden! I was there when you soundchecked, after that I had to leave but it was perfect how you were almost doing a whole set at the soundcheck! Love you man! Amazing song
Takes me back to that cell with Jax Opie Tig, and Chibs every time man...
Why is it that this truly talented musician has less than a million views and the fake boy bands with bad hair and worse pants have billions of views? COMPLETELY underrated and I am sad that I only know of him because of SOA. This song is amazing.
this song literally makes me cry . so much wistful sadness in his voice.
"Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends" - John 15:13
R.I.P Opie
heard this song on sons of anarchy and instantly fell in love with it amazingly powerful lyrics that hit and are heard
i love this song cant stop listening
when opie died I feel like I'd lost a brother. RIP opie
This song makes me cry so much. I don't even know why
The best as the action was handled by the guys ,Jax played flawless , I am sure that Tig is regretting every moment for being in this situation plus the ceremony made the ending more painfully for us.
A true artist, a beautiful song. I can feel it in my heart every time I hear it.
Amazing choice of song for Opie's death
brings me almost to tears everytime.
Opie great warrior, #SAMCRO forever. :'-(
Great song- perfect for Opie's funeral. Man- We are going to miss you. You went out a warrior.
I'd love to know what mics you use! :] This is a spectacular song btw!
I don't care about what mics you use✌GREAT SONG!
I came as soon I heard about you. You need an independent label. You also cannot stop and I really do like the song. Don't let this fall by the wayside. You have people that support you. Please keep pushing on. They do control the music industry so you have your work cut out for you. But they don't control us and by "us", I mean the rest of the world. Keep at it girl show em who they're fucking with just remember there are more of us than they want you to think they can't control the world. Only if we let em
RIP Opie
millions of tears
thats such a sad song but its really good :'(
Me and my buds share a brotherhood like this. We know this song well.... Without Brotherhood, We are nothing.
Great Song, Jax was changed forever after the death of Opie!
