John wrote this song about his father leaving when he was a child. Though you try to do better sometimes history repeats itself. Sometimes when things are done to us,we don't feel the need to do better, and sometimes we are able to break the cycle.
You felt it first time, and yes it hurts. I waited on the porch for my dad so many times, and yes someday never comes. He made more kids, and did that to all of us. I'm a middle aged father, married for 13 years and that kind of someday will never come for my children. I'm here no matter what for the long haul.
Excellent post, this story is repeated too many times and is shared by so many including myself. It has become an accepted practice to abandon responsibility for a lame excuse. Parents, particularly fathers and society as a whole could and should do so much better. In my opinion this can solve so many problems we see today.
I JUST saw a news report where news anchor Lester Holt was invited by John Fogerty to play bass with him at Radio City. It was so cool! Im glad John finally won the rights to his songs!!
THIS is one of their best songs AND one of my all time favorites. My oldest brother Louie actually sounds EXACTLY like John Fogarty. When he used to play out with his band, this was one of the songs on their playlist. #NYGenXBIKERLady
In SO happy this popped up in my feed. I don't know how I missed this along the way because I've seen so many of your reactions but anyway this is one of my favorite songs of theirs, and it's just so sad. And the beauty of it is that it can relate to so many different situations, including the man just for whatever reasons😢 running off and abandoning his family. But you also have to keep in mind that this was written around the time that a lot of men were being sent off to Vietnam to kill and be killed and it destroyed a lot of families. So it definitely has always had that overtone to me. It's just heartbreaking all the way around and yet the funny thing is I've played this many times in live settings in a band I was in, and people cry in the verses and they dance their asses off in the chorus. What a strange combination.
And I forgot to say the most important part, which was that just landing on this and watching it even though it was 6 months ago or whatever, every single time I have this feeling at the end like damn I really love her reactions❤
Fogerty stated in 2013 that the song is about his parents' and his own divorce: When I wrote this song, my life was pretty chaotic. I knew my marriage was going to break up. My band was falling apart. I was beginning to sense the darkness that was Fantasy Records. This song was inspired by my parents' divorce when I was a young boy and the effect it had on me. At the time, they told me, "Someday, you'll understand." The truth of this is that you never do and I found myself facing this as a parent. The irony was painful and inescapable.
Thanks for reviewing this song, it hits me hard every time I hear it. I once played it for a friend who was married with young children contemplating divorce. I wanted emphasize the long term impact of his actions. He eventually chose divorce, ran into him years later and he seemed as unsettled as before and that the divorce hadn’t fixed his unhappiness, unfortunately irreparable damage had been done by this point. In my opinion there is no excuse.
Thanks for reacting to this, and well. Personally never seen anyone else react to this song. Used to play on repeat years ago at a bad time. Such a good one. Thank you again.
Years AND years of generational trauma of children growing up without their Dads being there for the kids. It's a song about the cycle of childhood isolation that's been brought onto them caused by different types of parental separation. I suggest you go down the rabbit hole with them. The first two I'd recommend you check out are Born on the Bayou and Long As I Can See The Light. Their entire discography is amazing of all the years they were together. 😉💜😎 #NYGenXBIKERLady
I mean ultimately those are just songs, and they don't care who owns them. This is an autobiographic song, so the real question is did John maintain a good relationship to his own children after his own divorce over these many years? Or did he become the man in the song who grew up into the same man as his absent father?
I think it’s time for some heavy metal. How about listening to some Rob Zombie. My favorite songs of his are Dragula, Living Dead Girl, Superbeast, and Demon Speeding.
That’s all he knew and subconsciously thought it was a normal behavior. People repeat destructive behaviors and the best outcome is be proactive and ask for help. The definition of Insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result. Not trying to be an armchair psychologist, but I got help when it was so difficult to face your problems, there was nothing else left to do
From 1972, this was CCR's last hit.

Actually he wrote it about his brother Tom who had quit in 1971 a year prior to this song

This one gets me every time. Without fail.
Thanks for reacting to this. My favorite CCR song.
Love this song.
One of my favorite lessor known CCR tunes. So true: Someday never comes.

it was personal. One of the best tracks on an otherwise flawed (last) album.

You will love them!! Try more, many more hits but “Sweet Hitchhiker” is a banger!

Great group
Grabs you by the feelers don't it. It always gets me too.
A very painful song. 😢❤
You'll never understand him leaving.
Of course for John Fogerty Someday did finally come now that he legally got full rights to all those
great songs he wrote

Can relate; had to learn it fast and young, too.
The Beatles, now CCR - you're playing my song(s) list!

Everybody says someday I'll get to this do that whatever how true someday's never come Sometimes it's just not enough time I guess😊
Painful song, but a great song.

If you really want a treat Carly Simon she's got a voice of an Angel I know you'll love her TOP NOTCH

@Jay. Please do a reaction video to “Sound of Silence” by Disturbed. It’s epic. Thank you.
