He's just horribly incompetent, which is why his fighting style is a pastiche of half-complete moves that he renamed and never bothered to finish learning. But when he saw that he had won (without realizing Sagat let him win), he decided that he had avenged his father, and that to kill someone wouldn't have made his father proud. He stood up, turned, and walked away from Sagat. After that, he suddenly thought that he was amazing, and that his art was the reason; because he defeated Sagat, Dan was under the impression was the ultimate style, and became the cocky grunt he is in every game. However, he never got over losing his dad, so whenever he loses, he yells out to his father for help, and sometimes, when he wins, he says, crying, "I did it, father!" in the hopes his father is proud of him in the afterlife. *TL:DR* Dan's dad died, he got sad, and he wants him back.
