    This is a gorgeous redesign. It has all the same aspects that make the original TOS design iconic and gorgeous but makes it just that little bit closer to the NX and Discovery designs. After all it was only 80 years from when the NX was constructed to the first Connie coming off the production line.

    I thought the ship was supposed to be a light gunmetal colour. Looks like Eaglemoss have gone with a traditional grey tone where the actual on screen ship is closer to the NX-01 metallic.

    I think people forget that when Star Trek aired most of us were watching it on 10 inch black-and-white TVs. The reason why they didn’t put very much detail on the original enterprise was simply because the fact the camera couldn’t pick it up and the TV would never show it. When I purchased my first 14 inch colour TV (yes I’m old) I thought it was so huge and beautiful. Certainly makes me appreciate my 58 inch flatscreen. Often times I have to explain to people watching TOS that the special effects are from the remastered version and not the original 1960s production. I.e. tons of stock footage. Very very limited space Combat etc. I love this new ship but the original still hold a soft spot in my heart. I just find the cleaner simpler design makes it look far far more futuristic. Just my opinion.

  • @Stu1701
    @Stu1701 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I wish they'd taken more elements from the The Cage version of the Enterprise; I think the bridge dome should be a bit taller, the deflector dish should be bigger, and the nacelles should have those little spine-y things on the bussard collectors (the NX-01 refit had them too). I also think the nacelle pylons should be straight instead of angled back, it seems too TMP when the focus should be closer to TOS. And that gap in the pylons bugs me, I wish that was filled in.
    That said, I still think its a gorgeous model. I love nacelles, even without the spine-y things from The Cage, I do really like the nice blend between ENT and TOS design. The straight part on the back of the saucer with the little fins that's reminiscent of the Excelsior is a cool touch. I always love the little triangles on the bottom of the saucer, I have no idea what their purpose is, but I love them and I'm glad their on this model too. At first I didn't like the lowered profile, but its grown on me. The stretched out shuttle bay looks really cool too.
    I was very tempted to get the this model when it was announced, however I am of the same mindset as you about the XL models (most of them aren't worth it) and decided to wait for the smaller one in the Discovery Collection. I doubt there will be much difference between the two because the Discovery Collection ships are already pretty large.

    Nice review. I also received mine on Christmas Eve after having forgotten that I'd pre-ordered it and been determined not to buy any more because of lack of space, but this model is stupendous! I do have some complaints about the design of ships in Discovery in general, especially the H R Geiger-esque Klingon Gothic re-imaginings, but I approve of this version of the Enterprise 110%. Maybe even 120%!

    Mine is “out for delivery” for today! Can’t wait! This version is absolutely gorgeous, even though I have never seen episode 1 of Discovery. This would have made a good TMP Enterprise too. I remember I was shocked with my first view of the TMP Enterprise, as this was prior to the internet and I was completely unaware they had refit her for the movie. I came to love her too, but the Original design by Matt Jeffries remains my favorite. First and best, in my opinion! I would rank the TOS first, THIS one second, TMP refit 3rd, and the J.J. ‘Prise doesn’t even rank for me. Just yuck. Barf. The primary hull looks good, but the whole stardrive section is gross. Anyway, great review sir! Best wishes for a great New Year!

    Love this model. Bought it for my birthday earlier this month. It sits next to mine XL TOS Enterprise. Contacted Eaglemoss to ask if they have any plans to release an XL TMP Enterprise refit. They told me they surely hope so. I hope they do a better job on that one than they did on the A-version. The A has too many issues and that's why I won"'t get it. Hoping for a great TMP refit XL soon.

  • @jurassickaiju14
    @jurassickaiju14 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Confession time: I like this design. Like, a _lot._ It's my second favorite Enterprise design, after the TMP-refit and the first Kelvin Timeline version. Yes. You read that right. The Kelvin Timeline Enterprise is my third favorite Enterprise design. But hey, at least TMP is still my all-time favorite, so I'm not a _complete_ heretic.
    Look, I get it. The design breaks canon. All of Discovery does. I _get_ that. That being said, I really like this particular take on the Enterprise. I actually like the swept-back pylons over the straight TOS ones. It gives the ship a more TMP sort of vibe. And I actually like the Discovery starship designs. I just wish they didn't have the square nacelles.
    I hate to go into defense mode like this, but just looking at the comments section, it's abundantly clear to me that you can't say you like a certain starship design without people swarming over you telling you how it's "not real Star Trek" or how it's "ugly" or how you're just a "mindless sheep" or whatever.
    I've been a Star Trek fan since I first learned how to read and remember things. It breaks my heart to see everything going down the tube like this. And not just because of Discovery-just in general, I feel like the fandom has become a complete _joke._ I get that people are upset about the canon being upended, but the general decline of civility is just astonishing, and it makes me want to search for something better to invest my time in.
    This is a franchise that's been pushing for a future where all peoples can come and work together in harmony. So _why on Earth are we not trying to follow that example?_

    I like this model. A lot now that I can hold it, and view it from different angles. Still some things I would have done differently (Straight nacelle pylons, color on the underside hatches, clean the hull detail on the top of the saucer), but over I still like this model, and can't wait to see more of her in season 2.

      Bryan Fuller left _because of_ the massive changes CBS was shoving down his throat. Unless he has spoken out about _his_ version, we have no idea how much of his original concept is leftover in -std- as it stands now. Because he left the production so early on, I don't think any Trekker worth their salt will hold the end result(s) against Bryan Fuller, so what you are saying is a bit unfair.

    • @impactfoto
      @impactfoto 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What struck me as interesting was that through the entire booklet and all of the concept renderings, everything had the straight, perpendicular struts, and only the drawings on the inside back cover and the back cover show the swept-back struts. I wonder if the booklet actually mentions when the decision was made to incorporate the swept back design, as it clearly is in Discovery itself. I didn't notice Irish mentioning that in the review.
      I will always have a special place in my heart for the original TOS design, but all of these mental gymnatics over - 'canon' never cease to amuse me. Given what they had to work with in the 60s, the original ship is a masterpiece, but by today's standards it looks very primitive. The swept struts make for a much sleeker appearance, and no doubt make a lot of sense from a design perspective. They look a lot stronger and more robust. By the time we actually get to the 24th century, designs will be even more radically changes, and sadly a lot of the technology of Star Trek will likely still be a pipe dream, faster than light travel, etc.
      Many times, art actually drives reality, as in the case of how the TOS communicator inspired flip phones decades later. You can't possibly believe that a communications device 300 years from now will look anything like that... The comm badges seem more likely, or possibly everyone will be implanted with technology by then and there will be no need to carry any sort of communicator around at all.
      Anyway, to me, I can appreciate the new design for its aesthetic appeal, without feeling any sense of disrespect or insult to Jeffries' original.

    • @marleymcleay9228
      @marleymcleay9228 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@impactfoto It is a great design regardless, I love the impulse housing. I am a big fan of the ship, it is very reverent.
      The straight struts and the colours John and Scott offer, scream star trek. The concept work for the ships of the line calendar is my favourite artwork for the year. I just can't help the feelings I get when I see the art.

    I love the design. There is another TH-cam channel that feels like it should be refit to look like the the TOS original after the catastrophic damage mentioned in Discovery Season Two. I can’t imagine this new ship returning back to screen looking like the TOS ship and be more “advanced” with an outdated look and feel. It would be a ridiculous decision. That concept reminds me of the reimagined Battlestar Galactica. Outdated technology to beat a more advanced threat? Can’t happen with this series.

    *0:28* I was expecting you to say: “controversial.” Bless. It’ll never take the place of the Enterprise. But I do like it.
    Perhaps this may be a rarity soon as the rumours are that the Enterprise is to be redesigned and tweaked to bring it more into line with the classic design from 1965.

    The two issues I have are the nacelle pylons and the star drive neck. The swept look (with that useless gap) doesn't seem right for the look and the neck is too squat.

    To be honest it doesn't matter whether or not the DSC variant looks good. The problem is it's a variant.
    What we should have on screen is a beautifully retextured and HD rendered version of the original ship.

    Thought the nacelle might be tapered but you can see it for sure there, I wonder if there will be another version like some of the rumours have been saying with straight struts. There is a surprising amount of new ships for so few episodes and they haven't all been covered yet lol. Good on Eaglemoss.

    • @SC-mq1eh
      @SC-mq1eh 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      knowing eaglemoss, they arent shy with producing concept models, so id say its a safe assumption that you could see that design iteration

    The Discovery Collection ships are significantly larger than the generic Star Trek collection of ships. How much smaller can the "standard" Discovery Enterprise be vs. the XL version? It probably won't be too much smaller in keeping with the ships they've produced thus far.

    I really like this design except for the split pylons.
    But for me this isn’t the Ship from TOS.
    The scale alone doesn’t work for me - like JJTrek.
    That being said - it’s a good looking design and I wish most of the other Enterprise models were as good as this model.

    I'm not sold on the design. Star Trek Discovery... sigh.
    Is that really a docking port at the top of the interconnecting dorsal? Structurally, that's a really stupid idea.
    But a great video as always!

    Looks like they did a good job of designing the ship, that was up until someone just had to sweep back the nacelle struts. It always seems just when Discovery is about to do something right, they think to themselves and say ‘’ just how can we fuck up this part of Star Trek history ? “
