Hunting High and Low in Hawaii's High-Country: Pursuing Pigs and Sheep in Changing Weather

  • On this hunt, we're chasing pigs and sheep in the rugged high-country of Hawaii's Big-Island. While most folks think of warm and sunny beaches when they hear the word "Hawaii" this state offers a wide variety of climates, and weather can change on a minute-to-minute basis making spot-and-stalk hunting challenging to execute effectively. Aside from the beautiful scenery in this video, you'll also get to see me get a case of "buck fever" and misload my rifle (twice), only to redeem myself later in the day with a full pack of meat for the freezer. Mauna Kea is magical, I hunted it well for close to 30 years, before the new Saddle Rd. Sacred moments and food on the table. It's nice to be up there late in the day when the mist rolls in.

      It’s such a special place. It’s so amazing how you can feel totally alone up there too. You can’t beat the cooler temperatures either!

    Aloha Scott, Big Island hunter here. nice camera work and editing, good job! Mauna Kea is not the easiest hunt to pull off.Congrats on that tusky boar. Have you considered hunting with a bow? The shot opportunities and hunting areas become greatly enlarged with a bow here on the B.I.
    Just curious. Aloha bro, keep the vids comin🤙🏽

      Aloha bro!
      I’ve actually purchased a Hoyt and spent some time hunting sheep on Mauna Loa before the last eruption. I’m living in Florida now so have been adjusting to deer hunting from a tree stand. Not near as fun as the spot/stalk of big island though. Hoping to get back to the islands for a hunt soon though. I do pop back for work here and there! Good luck out there brother!

      I always feel a bunch of emotions when walking up to an animal we shot. The killing part never gets easier, but we’re always thankful for the food!

    Thank you for the high quality video. I especially admire your honesty of not cutting out the attempts on the ram. I will be on Big Island in February and was planning to hunt this unit myself. Your information is very valuable.

      Thanks so much for the support! I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos. Next time we will do a better job filming the animal before we make the kill! I think that was the main thing I would change with this video. We are learning more with every video we make! Thanks again for the positive feedback, man!

    • @ScottFergusonPhD
      @ScottFergusonPhD  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks man! We usually quarter them in the field and bring the ribs and other odds and ends with us. All of it goes into game bags and into a pack. You could also bring the whole pig out too, depending on size. The whole pig from this hunt fit in my 55 liter pack. It was heavy but well worth it 🤙🤙🤙

    • @ScottFergusonPhD
      @ScottFergusonPhD  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We ground some of it into breakfast sausage (check out my older video for the recipe), regular ground for burgers and chili, and saved some cuts for curing into a ham. I’m actually prepping the brine for the ham as we speak! Looking forward to that for New Year’s Day. What’s your favorite dish to use them in?

    Private or public? No hunter orange if public, pack no count.

    • @ScottFergusonPhD
      @ScottFergusonPhD  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was public, and you’re bang on, mate. I need an orange vest. The rules vary depending on the publication you read. When we first moved here I read the rules from this:
      dlnr.hawaii.gov/huntered/files/2013/09/Quick-Guide-to-Hunting-in-Hawaii-Brochure.pdf
      But upon further inspection, the regulations actually read “Any person who hunts, serves as a guide, or accompanies or assists a hunter on public hunting areas is required to wear an exterior blaze orange garment which may be a shirt, vest, coat, or jacket while they are engaged in those activities.”
      Note that a hat isn’t included in the list. So I gotta wear a vest next time!
