    The wild sheep of Mauna Kea are disappearing due to mass aerial eradication. One hunter tells the story of how this came to be.
    Before all the sheep are killed and eradicated from the mountain, I felt it important to tell a story of them. They have affected our lives in many ways more than the average public can understand. This is my story.

    wow, what an amazing video! I'm 13 and live on oahu and just like fishing there are less and less fish. I would love to live on the Big Island when i get older and hopefully there will still be sheep to hunt for my generation and others to come!

    I was born and raised on oahu and learned to hunt there. I recently moved to the big island. It's so sad that they are almost extinct on Mauna Kea now. I go up there almost once a week and it makes me so sad knowing that there used to be so many beautiful sheep. I never got to experience the sheep hunting on Mauna Kea in my 16 years of life now. But I hope we all can preserve what hunting we have left in hawaii for the future.

    Hunted with your father, you and your brother years ago. Great memories. People don't appreciate the hard work and effort that goes into hunting. Ryan, you should have shared your marksmanship scholarship and engineering degree. I was never even close to your father and you in focus, skill and endurance. Aloha. I was first introduced to hunting on Mauna Kea back in 1994. I was fortunate enough to take a Ram on Mauna Kea (above the fence line) in 2012. Sadly the entire population is now gone. I am glad to have him on the wall to remind me of what was taken from us all. Mahalo for the video.

    Great video Ryan! Keep it up. Mauna Kea holds a special place for me too, but it's wild turkeys that got me. All hunters need to heed your call, and protect the habitat and animals we love.
    BTW, the watering units are for game and non-game species, birds and whatever else needs a drink.

    Ryan great video I had no idea these issues were going on in Hawaii! I am so happy to see that the fellow hunters on Hawaii are passionate about their sport and also conservationists at heart. I was also glad to see the families getting together and teaching their children about hunting and being good stewards of the land! As you said hunting is more of a way of life than a casual pastime and it seems like the hunters of Hawaii are doing a great job of passing their traditions onto the next generation of hunters. I wish you all the best and hope soon the government sees the error of their ways and changes their policy. Thanks for a great video!

    The situation sucks but what can you do....
    I've been trying my hand at archery now that I've invested all kinds of money in rifle hunting...oh well. Seen a drastic reduction in the last 2 years up on the mountain. Sad. Maybe I'll see you down on the flats somewhere. Good hunting to you.

    Thanks Joe Arceneaux! For some reason, TH-cam doesn't have a specific reply button for your message?
    Anyway, I wanted to clarify a little on the water units. Yes, you are correct they are for game and non-game birds or anything that can get into the fence where the trough is. All our water stations on public state owned hunting lands are fenced in (notice that?). Sheep, goats, pigs are not able to utilize watering stations because they have been placed on the "injurious species" list and monies are prohibited from being used to water animals on this list and I believe this is also attached to Pittmann-Roberston funds as well or something to the effect that P-R monies trigger this stipulation. Whatever the case, I believe the fencing off of the watering stations is unfair and limits game management in other places where non-native forests are all but gone. Broad based legislation like that is killing us ... but the lobby to get those kinds of things does not care one bit about these animals or us as hunters.

    Thanks Ryan. As Big Island hunter I can understand the frustration. However, I also have been proactive about being a contributing member to the conservation of game and endangered species on Maunakea and Maunaloa by volunteering on restoration and cat control efforts. The door swings both ways if everyone helps to improve forest habitat on the mountain and recruit people from both communities to see each others views then change can occur. That’s how the bag limits got expanded.😜

    • @ryankohatsu8836
      @ryankohatsu8836  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      there were changes. there are less sheep in the area, the Mamane forest has recovered even greater, and Palila are still on a net decline, while environmentalists still primarily blame sheep when none of them could probably find one in the area themselves if they had days to do it.

    This film was well done! Hunters should rise together in agreement to protect our hunting heritage.Why is the federal government a horse with blinders. Working to preserve by eradication only makes way for a more radical catastrophe. Brush fires ! Animals keep the balance in wildlife in harmony with the rest of the eco system .Who will be held responsible when there is a brush fire. Plants, birds and animals will suffer.It will be a lose lose situation.

    All to save a one bird species that provides almost nothing beneficial that cannot be done by other birds.

    • @ryankohatsu8836

      Pretty much all eradicated from that particular area. Helicopter gunners struggle to find a dozen to shoot across the whole range of that area. Palila numbers are still the same or lower year to year.

  • @lesgus7324
    @lesgus7324 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video Ryan. you touched on the important issues. But the state keeps wasting money flying that helicopter to eradicate the sheep , while the ignore in my estimation the biggest threat to native birds. They need to service the traps for Ferrel cats , rats, and the mongoose and even wild dogs..

    A forest is more than few trees. as such replanting a forest is far harder than planting few trees.
    If it was me look to lowering cats and mongoose populations remove weeds replant underbrush and in a few years try planting trees.
    May also want try thinning the wild cows.
    But Hawaii has never been making good at fish and game laws. They seem to hate guns and hunting. Seem to want no hunting then a few years start exterminating animals. Even transporting a gun has odd laws in Hawaii.

    All that money for fencing including materials an labor , fuel ,chopper pilot and supply , shooter and people on the ground, they could just grow more Palila an transplant it along with shooting all nonnative birds and feral cats. Increase hunting, open areas like before. I used to hunt with my grandfather back in the late 70s and 80s but after hiking for hours and most of the day to find sheep, found a open area with a herd of dead sheep shoot from the air, just rotting in the sun. stopped going there an moved off the Island. Now I bow hunt mule deer an elk to feed my family. Wise up Hawaii DNR help the land - the people and Respect Aina.

    I am not a hunter, but hunters who respect the species they hunt is fine. But wholesale slaughter from a helicopter for no reason is not good. And the noise pollution of the helicopters are contributing to the demise of the Palila as you showed in your video. Thanks for showing us what is happening.
