Great info. You mentioned your preference for factory shine or lane shine. What is your recommendation to maintain factory shine? I understand that factory shine is impossible to replicate.
Please continue this type of content! I've learned a lot in the past few weeks that I believe will translate into making me a better bowler. I knew big asym low grit balls were better for heavier oil or longer patterns but didn't. understand why, now I do. I truly appreciate all the work and sacrifice of time you make to help myself and others like me, better bowlers.
This series has been fantastic to watch. I've been dealing with this a lot this year in league. I'm on wood lanes and I've had to user a weaker cover/core ball to get the ball downlane, but because of the violent reaction I've been seeing downlane I've also had to add surface to help blend the pattern. Awesome stuff here Luke 👏.
YES, this is exactly the point. Strong stuff with surface is going to be way too much, shiny stuff will be too much, BUT a weaker cover with the shine knocked off to both not hook too much AND slow it down is EXACTLY EXACTLY what the point of this series is. There are so many things you can do and adjust and change to figure things out. Some people think they're worse than they actually are when they just don't understand what they should instead be doing differently. Super super cool to hear!
Keep it coming. This is stuff I figured out a decade ago but still good to be reminded. It's also why I drilled a Virtual Energy and VG NANO Pearl with the same layout and the same surface prep to get out of one, still keep the same shape, but alter the distance where and when each ball hooked.
This is a great watch for anyone wanting to know the difference between what joe shmoe on the weekends deals with (me) and a pro, or even a great league/tourney player. Anyone can throw a strike, but it's a game of consistency with inconsistent conditions and as the competition gets better the margin for error all but disappears. These are fun videos!
Luke, Great video as always. I have recently purchased the Dark Code and absolutely love this ball. I am speed dominant player 17.5mph/375rev rate/5 axis tilt. I also purchased the Axiom line pearl and solid because I was missing the big boom sym ball option in my bag. I based my choice off the coverstock of the NEX. I do not like these as they dont fit my game. The first thing I notice is the speed of the ball. They appear (my opinion) to roll much slower than the dark code. My question for you is what in the bowling ball spec would tell you the ball would have this type of look? Also our house shot does not dry up. the lanes push the oil down creating carry down and flattening ball reaction. I have tried to ball up but when you are starting with the dark code thats really hard to do. I tried to use my axiom solid but it is to over under on that type of condition. If I wanted to ball up from dark code to defeat carry down and remember really don't like the heavy roll the axiom line gives me what would you suggest?
Yes, they do roll heavier and more slowly, or they don't rev up as quick. The Dark Code is asymmetric, and this is a big part of seeing the ball rev up more quickly, so that's going to be one thing that you CAN track through specs or numbers. I think you might like the RST X-1, it's also asymmetric but with a strong sanded coverstock to dig in more when the Dark starts to skid or get a little lazy in carrydown. You'll need to keep the surface on the X1 because everything shines up with use, but I think that's definitely one to start with or look at, I'd also add the 900 Global Reality to that list because it's also pretty strong overall and on the backend as well.
With Global, the number in the cover is the strength on a scale of 1-100, it's currently their strongest one out right now, so it's virtually a Sure Lock. The Reality isn't QUITE as strong as far as traction goes as a Proton, but it makes up for it in friction response and overall ball motion.
I'm just going to say it, Professor. Thank you so much for giving us novices some useful information/knowledge to try and better our game. Much appreciated and looking forward to others.
Man these new videos you've been dropping getting into the different elements of the game are killer. I wish I had a good comprehensive source of this information when I'd been starting out. Even earlier this year I wasn't totally clear about some of it and had to ask my pro shop a lot of basicish questions. I ended up with a dark code and parallax effect and sanded the latter down along with a different layout per the pro shop's call on that for a different reaction. I think this one in particular is the best yet since this dips into a bit of both the cover type and surface which is really confusing as a newbie
I have already been asked questions during league this year, I have referred them to this particular series of videos and the series just keeps getting better. I have watched them multiple times because there is so much to absorb. Great work Luke.
I’m not sure I’ve ever bowled there actually, mostly bowl in Olathe, Ward Parkway, Summit, Lunar, Belton, have bowled at Premier, KC Bowl, and Pro Bowl before it closed but there’s a handful I haven’t been to before
Good information. We just started are new league and it's for seniors. The week was really bad we had to bowl with spare balls and by the way the hooked you would have thought reactive. My husband who is pretty good bowler had 79 handicap, come to find out the oil machine didn't have any oil in it nobody checked is what we were told. This week we had oil and my husband has no handicap. So everyone was like how did you have a 79 handicap. Guess not everyone was told about the machine not working.
I mean . . the pros aren't the pros without being able to read ball reaction. They see what they need and the ball reps can get it for them if they don't have it, but no one has a rep in their back pocket until they get to the PBA, and even then guys like Belmo barely talk to them.
Most bowling terms are just regular words meant to describe regular things about what you're seeing the ball do, so usually the most simple and basic answer is the correct one. Smooth just means smooth, so if you watch a ball roll and it just kind of goes down the lane and gradually hooks into the pocket, that's smooth, sharp is if it goes down the lane and makes a really quick move or if it jerks when it hits the backend. Clean is when it effortlessly breezes down the lane or looks like it's floating, like it's not grabbing, trying to hook or slow down, just gliding on the oil.
I love finding these Gems, and watching them over and over again like my favorite movies.. 😊 Even though your whole channel is awesome.
EXCELLENT SERIES
Wow what a great video!

Usually you just shine it like crazy lol, the factory gloss is more for looks on the shelf than performance, but I really like it lol.
@@LukeRosdahl In other words, keep polishing it periodically, with a complete resurface when appropriate?
Yup

No plans on stopping! Got another good one dropping tomorrow!!

Fantastic stuff Luke, really enjoy this series!
Your channel is easily my top pick for bowling info. Made simple and clean, no bs.
Excellent, vintage Luke! Great job with the series!

Hey Luke great job! Would that 1000 n 4000 be done on a spinner with water or dry?
Did it at the bowling alley by hand while filming actually
@@LukeRosdahl Thanks!
Speaking of the kansas city area, what kind of equipment works best for you at amf college lanes? (If you ever bowl there)

Idk if I would say that about the pros. It's the ball reps who usually have an act for reading ball motion lol.
