- In this video I talk about why bowling ball rating systems or spreadsheets can never be accurate, despite good intentions.

To anyone newer to to bowling, this may seem like a lot. I recommend watching it multiple times. I have no skin in the game but can tell you that being part of Luke's discord/Patreon is an AMAZING resource for me. I've only been bowling 3 years and biggest misunderstanding was that "strong" and "angular" were the same. That costed a ton of money and frustration. The analogy of tires is probably the best description out there when talking about "ball strength." You nailed the analogies on this video! I especially like the calculator analogy in the end.
Daddy Luke is preaching and I have tears of joy coming down my face. This video is a 1,000,000/10 the information is spot on and so good. Love you Luke you da man
Spoken like a true Pro Shop Operator and less like a Bridge Inspector! Keep up the excellent work. Thank you for your time and effort.
This is as well explained as I have seen. Took me several years and lots of equipment to learn what you just said. Everyone new bowler needs to watch this
One of your best in-depth analysis. Debunked so much of the more simplistic ratings from the manufacturers. Also, much of what we will see is based on release, ball speed and angles.
I do want to thank you for recommending the Synergy in a side conversation we had. Great ball for me when the lanes start to break down. Smooth response with strong backend. Always appreciate your insight. Be well! 🤗
I like the race track and snow tire analogy
You like some videos.....Then there's videos like this that you NEED.
Props Luke...that was a ton of valuable information!
Luke is definitely speaking TRUTH! I do crack up though because more often than not on the THS my league uses, the "weaker" ball hooks more, probably due to friction response. Case in point, my Idol Synergy (HP3) does not hook/snap as much as my new Hustle Wine (HP1). Most likely because the Wine is brand new, but maybe the fresh OOB polish on the Wine allows for the hard snap at the back, they have identical drilling layouts.
This is so good. I subconsciously thought of strength as traction overall to handle heavier or longer patterns because I was thinking like the tire analogy. I used to focus heavily on numbers and all but I started gaging looks of my reaction and going on feel more and end up doing the numbers side more subconsciously since it allows me to relax and do better. The more I tried to look at do this do that and go down to the numbers it always made me feel more tense and mess up more and be less consistent.
So much of this comes down to experience understanding and feeling out the balls and lanes. I've spent some time playing with sanding my balls to see what it does to them with different formulas and types just to see what it does to them for me because sometimes that's all it takes to make a dud a winner for me.
One of the biggest helps is just having a good pro shop person to talk to who can give actual individualized feedback and suggestions too which will help understand this stuff more than any rating can do
Excellent video and knowledgeable breakdown of the game Luke! I love and truly appreciate your info and knowledge. Keep them coming.🤙🏿🤙🏿🤙🏿💯💯💯
Excellent explanation. Took me years to understand this material. “Why is my Hyroad hooking more than my virtual gravity?”
I really enjoyed this video Luke. You definitely got back to your roots with this one. You've helped my game a ton. I hope your success continues !!!
Loving this classroom series, can't wait for the next one, is there any one ball you would compare them all to for your ball Reviews just so people understand better how a ball does, I really liked how you explained the difference between the traction and the backend
Yeah having a kind of medium benchmark ball to compare them against isn't a bad idea at all . . I was trying to figure out how to do that because I'm not doing the ratings now going forward. Need to put some real thought into that but that's a good idea . .
That is some saved stock footage, you were right handed in them. Great stuff. Love the classroom stuff.
Loving this series Luke! Keep em coming!
Awesome info! Love the classroom series. Sure makes a lot of sense. Keep em coming Luke. So appreciated. Would love to hear you talk about the formulas of Global compared to Roto.
That’s a good idea, Global makes it KIND of easy with their cover strength numbers being right in the name, BUT there’s some nuance in there
If only actual school was this clear. Thanks Luke as always!
Ahh the good old footage when Luke had a high rev rate and could make a phase 3 swing. If only these videos counted for course credit in some college level math I could pass algebra 😂.
Thanks Luke this is all ties things together nicely. Another great video!!
Great information, thank you! I am really enjoying your videos!!
I rocked a Tropical Breeze for the last 5-6 yrs and it was a decent intro into reactive balls but it recently split and I'm torn on getting the Surge with the same cover but better core, or the Electrify which is a big step up all around. I had fun with it but I always wanted a little more performance so I didn't have to crank it so hard to grab. Without experience it's kind of a stab in the dark when buying a ball, especially for weekend warriors that will maybe only ever have a primary and spare in the "arsenal". I guess that's where finding a good pro shop comes in.
I'd probably just go up to the Electrify. You'd be comfortable with the Surge, but either of the Electrify balls would be a fair step up but without going too crazy.
@@LukeRosdahl Thanks for the advice, going to my local shop tonight to check them out. Really enjoying the channel btw, lots of great info.
I think core shape and strength/density is a fair baseline to use when people discuss ball strength because it is static.
Coverstocks react different for everyone based on the surface you roll on. I bet different coverstocks like different oil brands and some prefer different volumes to others. I wouldnt be surprised if understanding this will also help clarify how altering a surface of one ball reacts more to the surface change than another more so based on the surface it is rolling on.
Size of pours vs surface finish I bet is very relevant.
It would be great to have tons of resources and time to test all these factors.
I wonder what kind of information ball reps have access to if any like this and they don't make public because it would effect sales and marketing
awesome video
Amazing video!! Sharing with my wife and friends
i see this too many times with bowlers either they go off word of mouth on a bowl of certain people use at certain centers from instance the zen we bowl on a wood surface very high frictions the house pattern is long the surface hasnt been resurfaced in a while for covid reasons so i see bowlers buy shiny balls and they are too over/under here get in oil hits like a fruit get in dry takes off i tend to and my father use duller solid/hydrid balls here in early hooking to control the friction bowlers here dont understand that they buy balls that want to long and angular which just doesnt work here at all ive tried shiny stuff only thing shiny i got to semi work is the dark code
Id say just keep the reviews as is, under the assumption that they are being thrown under THS conditions. Then rate them based on their use in different conditions. Like the PHASE 2/Zen, Its seen a lot of conditions, including TV. Compared to lets say an RST or Reality which IMO hasnt seen much of the lime light. Is that because they are "designed" for certain skill levels or not practical enough for most conditions?
Great Info!
Thanks for making this video. The term "hook" has long been misused by bowlers to describe backend motion. Ball companies need to drop this term and establish a more accurate term to describe the process of conversion to roll.
I think you like writing. Good article. Could be shorter. But good. (i can think of a youtuber that attempted to create such a system. ....which i poked holes in, because ,...well.....it was not very well thought out). I wish manufacturers also stop giving hook rating and length rating numbers that don't mean much. A simple friction coefficient would probably tell us more.
These classroom videos have been great, and this one particularly is an eye-opener for me. I’m just too mathematical by nature, and I end up feeling like I’m guessing way too often for someone of my skill and experience level.
My follow-up question would be this:
How does one “develop a good eye for ball reaction”? I can sort of notice little things like burning up vs not getting started when I look at my practice videos from low angle and slow them down, but from the foul line perspective that stuff seems imperceptible to me, and I have 20/30 vision and wear prescription glasses when I bowl even though I don’t need them. Is there anything specific to be watching or something I might be overlooking?
I agree. But....what "ball rating systems" are you talking about ? One you tried out? Or does someone else has suggested one i am not aware of ?
All of them . .
@@LukeRosdahl I am not familiar with any complete system. Unless you mean some numbers each manufacturer mentions like "length : x, back end : z " etc. Which i agree are not helpful.
Enjoy the videos. No one bowls the same as anyone else. So a ball rating is never going to be 100% accurate. With it and everything else. Then you have to practice with it on the condition you intend on using it for, and fine tune it. Then it is not set in gold because of the lane condition, the day, and the lane machine. Just mentioning a few.
You know, why Storm has not asked you to narrate their 6 way or other 3 minute videos.. makes no sense. Those videos could totally use some calm thought provoking insight.
I can’t like this video enough.
