- Full shade garden tour for 2022 highlights the way this garden has performed during our extremely dry season. This garden is a decade old and has alot of established plants and hostas. Your shade garden is magnificent, and the rock wall is beautiful. I can’t wait to see it finished. Rock walls always add character to the landscape. Brian’s garden is looking pretty good too! It has a few weeds, but what garden doesn’t, right? You two are so funny together. I watch your videos and laugh out loud just about every time. Gorgeous garden layout! . I had to move my Japanese Hakonechloa grass from the shade into more sun. I hope it does better next year ! I am going to invest in a couple of frost cloths to see if it helps prevent the zapping of the hydrangea buds in the spring. It’s such a shame to lose those beautiful flowers. It did help when I put burlap on top of one of the shrubs.

Your garden is beautiful and your Hostas are amazing. I can’t believe you can keep them looking so good in the ground with slugs and deer! I have to keep most of mine in pots for those reasons 😆🌿
You two are so funny. Your hubby is very sarcastic reminds me of someone I used to know. Loved it. And you are the cutest little thing ever. Love your garden. I'm 75 and rent and my son lives 20 minutes away on 2 acres. Three years ago they told me I could come garden. They had two apple trees in their front yard and 6 blueberry bushes. My daughter in law was given some plants for free and I went from there creating separate garden areas. My son had gotten lots of bricks and pavers for free and I have been using those for garden edging. It has been so fun for me and a good way to get outside. They let me do whatever I want and I buy the plants. They get snow so my gardening time is from about April until November but this year it has been so hot this summer that I can't go there. I get over heated so starting this week I will be back preparing for winter. They also have a giant maple tree down by the creek which is a beautiful area with ferns. I hope to make stairs going down there and clear it up a little. Gardening makes my life feel worthwhile at my age. I do wish I had my own place but cannot afford that. I am just thankful to get to transform their yard.
How nice of you that you are investing your time and energy into your family’s property! I can imagine you would love your own space to makeover but it’s nice that you have 2 acres to create some masterpieces on. The heat gets to me also… usually we have short term heat spikes where I simply cannot work in it but I completely understand that limitation. Love your idea of the stairs to the creek. Gardeners are very creative people. I enjoyed reading your message and vision! Keep up the awesome work!

Love your garden! It's evident that you work very hard and have a great eye for combinations. I moved from a fully landscaped house to a wild mess. Since.I'm turning 70 this year, I have little patience for waiting. I want it soon! I've developed 2 gardens myself and have had a professional plant my front yard. Next year sections will leap, while others still sleep,

Love your shade garden...your combination of foliage with the various colors, textures and size is gorgeous. Could you use a cloth cover over the hydrangeas in early spring to protect the buds from getting damaged from early frosts? I’m asking because I’m also in zone 5 and have some hydrangeas that produce beautiful foliage but no blooms.
You have the most beautiful garden. One I aspire to have but struggle really badly to get mine to grow to a decent size. I blame that on my neighbor who has a black walnut tree in his yard and I'm not sure where it's roots go to in comparison to my gardens.

Your garden looks great! Isnt this year so weird compared to last year? I live in Southern Maine and last year we had so much rain I never had to water! And there were so many mushrooms everywhere it was crazy. This year we are now in a severe drought. I think your Coneflowers in part shade will flower. I planted 3 Cheyenne Spirit Coneflowers in part shade last year and only got one flower but the leaves grew great. Then this year they are blooming like crazy. So excited about the Monarchs I am seeing on my Milkweed. Thanks to you I bought some Dill seeds for next spring for the Swallowtails. Also thanks to you I have 2 huge Daylily seed pods curing from crosses I am trying. I've learned so much from you. Thanks!
Thanks for the tip on the coneflowers, maybe I’ll leave them another year to see what happens. And yes- entirely opposite years! I really got spoiled last year with not having to water…. This years drought seems magnified because of that! You’ll love adding the dill- I’m so happy when I see the little guys on there eating away…. It’s such a joy! Good luck with the daylily seeds! It’s so fun to make your own crosses! Keep me posted!

Hostas are a plant of wonder,in my zone,6B,they flourish,northside,the empress Wu is the envy of my neighbors,but I give cuttings to any and all who ask,in the spring.
Also,in the spring,when they poke up from the ground,they are delicious!!
As long as you don’t fertilize or pesticide,a hosta shoot is like a baby romaine heart,it’s heaven!!
The shade garden is such an inspiration, really love that one. The stone wall is fabulous too, don't forget to tuck some nice plants in the cracks, fleabane comes to mind, I love that stuff, just my 2 cents. How's Lily lane coming along.? My brother has racing and show pigeons, he said a snake got into the coop, the mother pigeon spread her wings in the snake so it couldn't get her babies.
Love that idea! Lily Lane is coming slowly… lots of blooms on the two scapes that I’ve been watching and they are gorgeous and huge. I have three more scapes that I’m waiting to mature so I will be sure to post what those look like! Amazing about the pigeons. She knows how to protect… snakes are so creepy and cool. 😅 I know they’re great for gardens but eek… they also creep me out occasionally!

Hope you guys get some rain, here on the shore in Maryland, we've had our share, and I think the states that aren't getting any.

Yes! I have actually started plugging in the ones that bloom on old and new wood like Onyx Peacock and such…. Although had no blooms on those this year and they have reliably bloomed for the last 3 years. We had very little rain this year which could’ve contributed too. ❤️

Love the stone wall, looks like what you see in Mass and New Hampshire. Snakes do like those but your snakes aren't like the ones in the South, rattlesnakes, water moccasins, etc. 🙂
Eek! I’m happy with my snakes 😅… I don’t even know how I’d deal with those…rattlesnakes scare me!
@@GuidingGreenThumbs I keep all my birdseed in a small building in the back yard and one day I opened the door to see a snake all curled up and staring at me. I took a pic and sent it to UGA and they said it was harmless. Whew! There are creatures here I never new even existed.🙂

If you want your cherry explosion hydrangea to bloom next season try the growers trick. When fall comes before the frost tie the wood in a huddle like you stake your peonies then get some type of chicken wire and create a tube cage around the plant taller than the plant, then stuff the cage from bottom to top and over the top of the hydrangea with the fallen leaves , you can use a broom handle to push the leaves down to the bottom as you fill carefully around the plant . In the spring after all possible chance of frost, cut the ties holding the tube together and unwrap your present and use your blower and clear the leaves carefully not breaking your buds off pull loose leaves away from the plant. I want a picture of all your beautiful blooms next summer!🌸

First time watching and I LOVE your shade garden. Sorry if this has been mentioned before but I absolutely adore the the snail sculpture that is peeking out by the H. Sagae hosta around the 3 min mark. Do you know if there is an online resource to purchase these?
I purchased the snail from a vendor at the CT Flower show in February…. He makes all sorts of things. He doesn’t have a website, his whole business is traveling to shows. 😊
I sometimes pinch my sedums too and plant the clippings for more plants to share

A big dog to chase them during the day and Liquid Fence Deer and Rabbit Repellent consistently applied during the season. :-)
I planted foxglove with my hostas. the dear don't brother mine. And they are right next to the house.

Thank you! I always start with 3… I started with 3 of each variety in that shade garden… but it took a good 3 years to really see them start to grow in together and fill out. They are slow to establish but once they do… they take right off!

I tried to grow it here in the Houston area because it says it can grow in zone 9, but was not able to keep it properly watered when I was out of town, so it couldn't establish itself and all died out, sadly!

Lawn grass or the grass in the shade garden? Our lawn is all weeds haha, we have such hard clay that we just let whatever will Grow, grow. Keep it at 3” mowed and it looks decent.
The shade garden grass is Japanese Hakone grass 😊

That was dug up during excavation when the house was built. It was actually bigger! The rock in the other shade garden is a piece that broke off of it! We also have a rock quarry near us that people can buy boulders at… probably be quite a hike for you! 😊

I'm wondering how much sun your coneflower gets. They look great and I just planted a few varieties in my Shady North facing garden and I'm hoping for the best. About how much sun do they get a day?
They get 6 hours of sun and do well. I have some native varieties in the shade garden getting 3-4 hours of sun and they flower but not as much as the ones in full sun. 😊
Your shade beds are so full and beautiful! You have quite a collection of hostas. Was it hard to establish these beds under trees with all their roots?
It was not hard at all. I have not had problems with the tree roots. I did build up the soil because our native soil is hard clay so it got amended but luckily the roots are deep enough not to bother the plants.
What do you use to repel bugs an grasshoppers?? Your hosta are beautiful, thank you
I don’t use any sprays except a deer repellent called liquid fence.
How do you get around the roots from the large trees? I would love to do this in my yard but there are large roots everywhere! Your yard is definitely my dream!!
I built up the soil originally about 8-12” when planting and honestly have never had trouble digging. The roots are deep enough and not near the surface that I’ve been able to plant. ❤️
What spray do you use for deer? They eat everything in my TN garden. Beautiful place!!!!
