OK, I have to give props to your husband for his attempts to bring the dad humor into this... As a fellow dad and husband I fully understand the need and desire to unleash the pent up dad jokes that are almost impossible NOT to say when your given the right material to work with. So, this one's for you, husband behind the camera guy, because no one else will appreciate your humor! 👍😏
Every morning right before my coffee I take our dog out to potty and walk my entire garden. I have to see what's happening to every plant in every spot every day! I agree the Bleeding Heart is gorgeous but can be a bit of a bully in the garden "I'm a pansy, will you pet me?" Brian is a mess and adds so much to your tours
I LOVE morning walks... every day I do the same! Bryan may not see the difference everyday but i can spot them in a second haha... and yes... he cant wait to add his two cents in where he can! Thanks for the comment!
Excellent all around video. Perfect assortment of shade plants, great lady narrative . Beautiful photography and natural lighting! Best editing and camera work. Thanks to the both of you for a feel-good HostaVideo.
I love the fact that you give the botanical name for the plants as well as the common name. Brilliant for us in the UK who watch your channel. And how do you keep your vistas looking SO amazing - the slugs decimate all of mine!
What a beautiful garden..Love Hostas!! My neighbor has Hosta Liberty and they don't look like much in the pot but man when they get bigger they get Amazing color.A true showstopper!! I am sooo happy you pointed out your Hydrangeas hardly bloom in NY due to the late frosts. Same thing happens to mine here in Illinois by Chicago. I've had my hydrangeas for 7 years. Every year no blooms but because of the warmer temperatures this spring my 5 older varieties have blooms. My endless summer ones usually will get maybe 3-5 blooms but this year I have like over 15-30 blooms on each plant old and new varieties.
Here it is a year later, and my Ferns, Heucheras and Hostas have popped up. Wasn't sure they would due to many small snows and severe cold we had. I had to put up a make shift fence due to a new puppy I took in. He isn't a digger, but a grab and go dog with MANY of my plants, I lost a lot. No pond yet, but I may get it in towards mid Summer. I'm also starting a ton of Heucheras from seed. Looks easy and much cheaper then the over 2000 grand I spent last year, (Never spent so much on plants before)! Most plant stores and nurseries have little selection of Hostas and Heucheras. So I sent away for 1200 mixed seeds of Heucheras. Your videos are an inspiration. Thanks so much!
Thanks for sharing your garden! My dream garden. Please continue to do video like this one. I really like that you wrote the name of each plant and provided explanation for each.
Beautiful gardens! What kind of fertilizer do you use? You and your husband make a great team! I enjoy watching your videos and listening to all your comments!😊💖🌸🐝🌼
Thanks for the comment/question! I use an all purpose granular every spring (Espoma plant tone) and then Neptune’s Harvest Fish and Seaweed Blend throughout the season. 😊
Your shade garden is beautiful. You gave me some great ideas for the shady portion of my yard! I am going to add a clay bench to sit and meditate in the middle! :)
Welcome and good luck! I was a newbie once and still consider myself one because the garden teaches me everyday! It's a great thing to get into. Its addicting! (in a good way!)
your hostas are so beautiful. I wish I hade more shade in my garden! I need to plant more trees. I love the varieties of textures, colors and shapes. Great eye for creating beauty!
Hello im new sub here watching from Ohio. Your hostas plants are huge was surprise 😳. Mine just regular size and they still blooms ❤️❤️❤️ thanks for your garden tour. Very nice landscaping 👍👍👍
You know how much I love your hostas. You have some of the most beautiful hostas and some of the biggest ones❤️ All your other plants are great with your hostas. I would love to find that Russian Comfrey. I have a variety of epimedium that has yellow flowers but would like to find one like yours. Your pieris is looking great❤️❤️❤️
I know there’s a nursery in CT that does mail order of specialty plants and it’s where I purchased my comfrey- it’s called Broken Arrow Nursery. Thanks for the comment! 😊
That could be Hosta T Rex the one you first thought was an elegans? Such a beautiful garden. Delighted I found your video, just started my own shade garden in a space in total shade by my huge trees so was wondering what to plant...going to copy your hosta heaven 😂😂😍😍 thank you.
So glad you popped up on my TH-cam feed!! Love your garden! Thanks for your narration and in-depth descriptions! Love, love, love it all! Looking forward to more tours. P.S. I really like your husbands sense of humor.
Absolutely love, love , love your hostas! I had a hosta garden on the Cape, but it's so hot and humid here in GA, I don't think they would survive here. Your hubby sounds like a nice guy.
Have to agree with comments below this was excellent. It is just an absolute haven. Disclaimer "I'm trying to impress my wife, so I am going to steal your ideas and pass it off as my own". She just love Hosta's
On my side it will be my sweet wife😍 handling camera and I do the presentations with naming plants and all that...............Thank you for this video actually I am now trying to do some collections of these Hostas and I have like 10 types...funny enough I do not have any of these you have presented. I am in Tanzania..its hot but managed to put a lot of shades and and they great. Hope one day to get more of these Hostas. They are really wonderful plants.💚💚💚
Thanks that was a brilliant tour of your shade garden. In Northern Ireland we probably don't have the v.hot/v.cold but plenty of rain. Loved the way you named the plants soo helpful. I'll have to create more shade in my new garden.
Beautiful tour you are very knowledgeable I don't have any hosta yet but would like to add some to my shady areas near the forest edges and underneath the trees..your garden is beautiful!
Thanks for this video. I've never been a shade gardener. In fact I'm more of a veggie gardener with a few plants and flowers thrown in. BUT..... I have a huge side yard of shade that has always been barren. So I bought a TON of Hosta's and Heuchera Plants. And a lot of different types of Ferns. Living in a high desert area, we can have snow fall just before Mothers Day. And 80 degree days, weeks before that. We call it, Bi-Polar weather. I ordered bulbs and root stock which are growing all over my house. Ready to plant on Mothers Day, (It's a MESS!) I didn't realize how great Perennial Shade Plants could be. Or the amount of colors leaves had. And that mound of Grass is AWESOME...... (Gotta get me some of THAT!) I'm not a house plant person. And I feel like I'm living in a Jungle at the moment. I'm even thinking of adding a 12 foot pond to go with the new Shade plants. Problem is...... my dog is a WATER Dog...... Egads!!! Liked, subbed and saved!
Thanks for sharing! You're going to have such a fun time creating a shade garden and it sounds like youre off to a great start with the plants ready to go! I remember last spring, my living room was full of plants I purchased and potted up because of a deep freeze! Haha it was kind of funny but at least they made it to planting time. I would love a little pond... we'd have the same problem I fear with our three pups. Good luck to you! Keep me posted on your progress!
Hi new subscriber here! I love your tour garden, I'm sure along the way, I'm gonna learn more about plants from you , so thank you for doing this videos. 😁🙏🌱
I'm a little late to your channel but so glad I found you. I'm in Vancouver, BC in a Zone 8b. You have a stunning shade garden. Everything I love and have several in my own garden, Japanese forest grass, hostas, brunnera, and OMG I don't know what it is about epimedium but it is my absolute favourite plant of all time. And your comment about heuchera, yep you have to experiment with different ones. You're right, things always make you go 'hmmmm?' I don't have Astilbe and have often thought about getting it. Do you like it or could you leave it? Loved your video.
I planted two Jack Frost last Spring and both died by fall. They were close to the sprinkler so I'm not sure if it was a "too much water" issue or not enough light issue. My shade garden is very shady in parts since the trees above are about 19 years old or better. I'd love to get a clump of Brunnera going but it's a plant I don't have any experience with. I love my all gold also and love to pet them too lol. Your garden is beautiful, just subcribed!
They definitely don't like too much "wet" or too much sun. Too much water can give them crown rot... They do like a rich, amended soil but not consistently wet. They can be finicky to get established but are drought tolerant when they are. (I have lost a few of them myself!) I would recommend watering from the ground level also- not over the leaves... If you buy new ones, don't plant in the heat... they hate their roots roughed up especially in the heat of summer. I would plant new ones in the early spring and give them the whole season to establish. Don't over water in the spring while temps are cool... just keep an eye on the leaves for wilting in the heat, then water (or if you know the ground is dry from lack of rain.) Hope this helps!
@@GuidingGreenThumbs Thank you so much! This has been very helpful and I'll try again early next Spring in a different location away from the grass sprinkler head. After what you just said, I'm almost positive it was crown rot.
Thanks for sharing your shade garden varieties! I am planting a shade garden in a newly created area between our house and timber framed pavilion. We def have slugs but not too many… they are manageable. Our yard is sloping and dry generally… so that helps. 😊
Love your garden and yard
I love your garden it’s gotten bigger than last year! Your husband cracked me up everytime🤣
It’s funny how gardens grow and expand every year isn’t it?! 😂

Second time watching this. Thanks for the information and recommendations. Your garden are stunning!
try Deer Out for spraying. Smells like Peppermint. I have 259 hostas and a deer trail next door to me and don't have a problem
Thanks for sharing your shade garden varieties! I am planting a shade garden in a newly created area between our house and timber framed pavilion. Yes! That is beautiful! It reminds me of a cross between sum and substance and guacamole hosta. (both of which i have) I have a wish list a mile long!
