    Do you think now is the time for Anvil? Do you agree that Foxhole has reached its limits in terms of Capacity? (not content)
    BTW there were plenty of other examples for my points i could have thrown in but life is busy and the announcement caught me on the backfoot. Like for example, another reason potentially for the medieval setting is to keep engagement ranges shorter, so that more people would be in closer proximity to actually communicate with each other. That sort of thing.

      So much this. Foxhole I think is near its limit of what they can achieve in the engine. If they can get Anvil to work they can do so much more in a possible foxhole 2.

    im not worried about this game taking resources from foxhole development, im worried about this game cannibalizing players from foxhole because they are both so similar in the economy aspect. Why should i play logi when i could go build a farm in this game?

    • @lavatacoburrito9410
      @lavatacoburrito9410 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      Agreed. Foxhole has exited early access, so we just have to pray that when the Devs do inevitably stop giving the game updates, they balance out all the issues the best they can. As for players, I'm not too worried, but I see your point. But think of it like Coke and Fanta, both made by the same company, similar in characteristics, but different products altogether. Now anyone would get tired of drinking Coke for 6 months straight, so they try to find a new beverage, maybe like Fanta. Then they may get sick of it after 6 months, so they switch back to Coke.
      Point is, everyone loves and hates Foxhole, and everyone gets equally as burnt out and drops the game when they get tired of it. But eventually they come around, maybe around some big update, and pick it up again. Maybe it's burnout from the community or from the setting, so they just get tired and drop it. Hopefully Anvil Empires acts as a new flavour with a familiar taste.

      It all depends how the game is going to work. If building a farm is more fun than playing logi it could mean that logi players change games to Anvil since it's more fun to play as a farmer and it's essentially the same game but with different themes.

      I think if you compare the concepts of anvil and foxhole together without the hindsight bias of understanding Foxholes limitations on U4 instead of R2, foxhole’s concept has a lot more “flagship game” potential. Based on the tech alone, anvil will be able to create more populated battles, and the cross faction vc will make the community less tribal and fragmented.
      The commitment to no microtransactions pretty much ensures foxhole doesn’t get ported to R2 because from a business standpoint it doesn’t have as much profit potential. But in a perfect world I think the concept of foxhole has A LOT more potential

    Excellent break down as usual!
    The one macro fundamental I always thought Foxhole lacked was geopolitics. Not voting for region-wide commanders or anything, but rather more factions and group agency like you see in EVE Online. Both world wars were rife with nations switching factions, geo-political maneuvering, and the cause-and-effect of everything playing out on a global scale. Because what's war but politics by other means? With Foxhole's two factions, the best we could get is dumb, regimental drama that constantly towed the line of breaking code of conduct.
    It will be interesting to see Anvil tackle a real player sandbox, and like you, I'll be supporting these devs with checking it out. But damn, I just wish we could have gotten this true war sandbox in Foxhole. Maybe some day.

    There's also one thing that we should consider: Anvil Empires itself might also be a tech test. The devs, particularly the original Clapfoot crowd, went really in depth with its world building, and have shown a lot of passion for that IP.
    So... why not start thinking of a "Foxhole 2" in the not too distant future? One that combines the technical prowess the team has achieved over the last few years, the multiplayer potential of the R2 engine, and the Foxhole IP that's where most of the Siege Camp fans love about the company.
    But Foxhole 2 will have to greatly expand upon the current game, not just build the same game in the new engine. I'd love to see new maps and factions, for starters.

    • @TheDaris36
      @TheDaris36 ปีที่แล้ว

      No far as I can tell Anvil here is their next game, they made a steam page for it, they're building hype for it, you know everything that goes into a new game. The tech tests have been done already, hell they been going on for years now and built the foundations for Anvil.
      Also don't see them flat out making a Foxhole 2 at this point either, not like they need to either updates to Foxhole still works just fine. Really do not expect them to even start thinking about a sequel for many years to come.

    • @Green0-3
      @Green0-3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheDaris36 Don't just look at the short or mid term. A game take time to develop, and I do agree we won't see a Foxhole 2 any time soon.
      That said, give it a few years. The devs won't be updating Foxhole forever. Sooner or later the team will move on to focus solely on Anvil for a bit, and their next project. As such, who knows. Maybe by 2026-27 we'll see Foxhole 2 come over the horizon.

    You're pretty much spot on here. As confirmed in the latest Devblog: " - as we were approaching Pre-Alpha for Anvil Empires we were investigating solutions for local voice chat ... - the proposal was to have both Anvil Empires and Foxhole share infrastructure."
    Local voice between ally and enemy is coming back to the game because they were exploring voice chat in Anvil Empires and figured out how to implement it into Foxhole. Now both games share the same infrastructure since the Vivox voice servers have upgraded to host more players in the same voice channel.
    I imagine more upgrades like these will happen over time until Foxhole catches up with Anvil in terms of graphical and technical capabilities.

    This does make me wonder how Anvil might handle the whole Tech advancement thing that Foxhole has. maybe they'll just get rid of it. Or maybe they'll be able to cover the evolution of Medieval arms, and maybe even the emergence of early gunpowder weapons as late-game tech. Think early, clunky Bombards, Powder Keg sapping charges, Greek Fire, or even the Handcannon/Arquebus.

    • @dra6o0n
      @dra6o0n ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You can have a weapon advantage system:
      Swords beats out Axes when it comes to swinging your weapons at the same time. Axes beats shields. Blunts exhausts the targets most if they block the force, and isn't negated by armor.
      Spears and polearms out-ranges the smaller weapons, and has their use against Calvary or infantry.
      Then add in ranged weapons like slings/staff-slings, bows/crossbows, and 'throwing' variants of melee weapons.
      And even stuff like stationary cannons and hand cannons.

    I'm surprised they are announcing a new MMO so early after foxhole 1.0 instead of something about extending foxhole. I always figured they would make another game but I thought they would make an RTS. They already have all the assets and maps. A single player foxhole would be an easy sell.

    • @commentarytalk1446
      @commentarytalk1446 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      RTS is a niche genre however. The combination of survival, base-building, PvP and MMO is probably a much bigger market of players. They have a lot the systems and designs to replicate and modify and update the tech to pull in more players to make a good game that sells well. That'd be my guess.

    My concerns are that since this will be more melee oriented than foxhole, it might suffer more from clunky melee combat than foxhole. I also fear that tech would be limited in some aspects. For example, horse riding. Since there are only so many horse variations one can make: knights with swords, lances, long bow, etc. It'll be interesting to see how they work around it. At least with ww1 and ww2 the tech changed so drastically that options were almost limited less. Still, I think they would have been better off going more Sci fi on their next thing.

    I'm cautiously optimistic, but I've seen other devs fall into this trap before. Diversifying away from your big game can lead to innovation and financial stability, but you have to make sure your new game is more than just a half-baked copy with an additional gimmick. Medieval Engineers (from the creators of Space Engineers) and Raid: WW2 (from the creators of Payday 2) are both particularly egregious examples of this.

    Anvil Empires can be a large development as to me it looks like the servers will be open forever and some people will play the game for months developing their own empires, experience wars, make their own unique diplomatic systems and hierarchies.
    And as the devs can develop the game in two or more ways.
    First, they can do it is to develop the game to a world scale with multiple continents.
    Secondly, they can slowly develop new technologies for the player to receive over time like late medieval era man of war armor, or the renaissance era star fortifications and large bombards, to the industrial era with steam engines muskets and soon ww1 and ww2 era weaponry.
    Another way is to add fantasy stuff to the games with dwarves, trolls, and dragons or even other stuff.

    You say it's easier to balance, but it can be just as difficult with melee weapons. How fast can one attack with a certain sword vs it's damage (which a DPS score doesn't necessarily make apparent) then how will armor affect stamina and attack refresh times, the reach of some weapons against others, different arrowheads, the differences in bows when made of different materials or designs... and now you've got THREE factions with their own supposed flavors and combat doctrines they're supposed to favor...

    • @ISawABear
      @ISawABear  ปีที่แล้ว

      sure, but i guess in the sense that i dont think there's going to be tanks, or battleships, APCs, there's just less overall things to deal with in total. so from that sense the balancing wont be as hard.
      The factions themselves act as a balancing mechanic. If one factions is WAY overpowered, the other two are likely to gang up on them, negating any technological advantage they might have.

Even if it is a better game, Anvil will not sell as well as Foxhole. The only saving grace it has is that so much more has gone into its development already and experience the devs have had, versus Foxhole it was just so rudimentary to start with and had a lot of momentum to build to get where it is today.

    it looks cool of course, but here's the question? how will the cavalry be played? since the horse is not a tank, this tank can iron a trench with a machine gun and a cannon, but what will happen here? obviously, if the game has the opportunity to dig ditches, pits and similar objects, then we will either have a fierce trench slaughter in a pile of trenches, and stone gouges in the form of walls. As it comes out, of course, you will need to look at it all, but I think the cavalry will be more like a transport than a full-fledged combat unit.

    There is a different team working on both game so why not doing it, Foxhole 1.0 is out time to make a new project. And they are keeping Foxhole in developpement witch is cool from them.

    Personaly i think is to much stuff in foxhole and maybe some direction the dev choice in the past make foxhole a really difficult game to play time to time.
    Maybe a big war more casual will be appreciate by many players. And be able to switch to ww1 / ww2 to medieval environement is a cool feeling.

    From what I've heard military and war game players and possibly online guilds are all drawn to Foxhole as a customer base and it's proved very popular with these markets of players?
    My guess is that a Medieval style game could tap more directly into video-game players across a lot of genres? I've seen games such as Banished (and number of similar other indie games) where players build little settlements in the wilds and the people are AI workers but it's obviously limited but the concept is appealing. Or I've seen MMOs such as Life Is Feudal or Gloria Victus where they provide more combat focus with large avatars but a lot of people find the idea of a player-driven worlds where the players stack systems to build up their power attractive (but these games are grindy and have so many technical issues and low pops). There's other games that segue into this.
    I'd tentatively say there's a good market potential that's worth tapping. The basic formula Siege Camp have got right with Foxhole, they can iterate and optimize it for example work on ways to make players have more personal input as well as enjoy the team aspect and then perhaps make the whole spectacle of large battles look more exciting and captivating which might look great on twitch and the like?
    So on timing and extending from Foxhole with 2 teams, it's the right business decision: Nothing is guaranteed but I'd guess the conditions suggest there's some big market growth to be had and that's how businesses should work to make profits and invest successfully. It looks like a step up from Albion online which has done well with more limited scale of battles for example.

    A lot of points about the game engine are not correct.
    For reference, R2 Is not a game engine, it is a server engine. Anvil is made and runs on UE5.
    Considering the fact that foxhole and anvil run on both different game and server engines, it is unlikely that any features will ever be ported between one another. This was what the devs said earlier in development.
    Anvil is meant to be an entirely different beast than foxhole, it has a different scale, a different audience and theme. Different systems and also different player expectations. I dont think it is fair to compare it to Foxhole, it is akin to comparing apples and oranges. Sure they are both fruits but that is about where the similarities end.

    "Anvil Empires is being developed by a separate division within Siege Camp. The Foxhole team will continue to support and expand on Foxhole for many years to come with new features, content, and improvements." A direct quote from the dev team. They're clearly not giving up support on Foxhole, they're just diversifying their portfolio like any good company will do.
    Foxhole is awesome, but it's not fun. I've played for 10 hours straight, and held the line from constant enemy attacks only to hand command over to a french legion, and wake up to news my frontline fell within 30 minutes. (True story, never trusted the French again.) At least with this medieval game, it sounds like I'll be able to make my own town with my friends, and trade with larger clans for resources. Instead of in foxhole being almost forced to join a company, or be left out of 90% of the gameplay loop.
    Why would I play Logi for a company I'm forced to interact with, compared to farming resources where larger groups have to negotiate with me to supply their army?

      Anvil Empires has a good chance of being successful, popular and fun but there's also a chance it misses the mark. The main thing is imho the design and tech are ahead of the curve in the market so they have a good chance to go big. If they do with Medieval setting next stage is a big IP eg Sci-Fi via WH40K with Foxhole = 2-Factions, Anvil Empires = 3-Factions, WH40K = Multi-Factions (something like 12?) That's when Guild Wars will explode as the current big genre.

    I believe you have it somewhat backwards. Foxhole isn’t a testbed for Anvil - Anvil is a testbed for Foxhole’s sequel.
    You said it yourself, the Unreal Engine has limits - but their new engine fixes many of these limits. Could you imagine just how amazing Foxhole would be if it ran on the same engine as Anvil? It already has things like Horses that Foxhole lacks - it can in all likelihood do everything Foxhole can, but better. I theorize Foxhole 2 will be made in this engine - using all the same mechanics and assets of Foxhole 1 but vastly improved thanks to the new freedoms this engine provides.
