thanks for the post and glad to be of help!:) i have been in the same boat at various times and come to appreciate learning more and more as time passes:).
Just getting into this syncing buisness with my external flash, the flash itself is intimidating to me, so rarely use it. Your video was awesome, your a great instructor, and the flash cards were a very big help! I'm a visual person so they helped a great deal for me to understand the concept.
I'm a beginner and I had a mentor but he dropped me. So these videos really fill in the blanks. Keep doing what you are doing. You are appreciated. I have a Nikon D7100.
Coming in to high speed sync not knowing anything about it, your simple note cards demo was excellent. I watched this video first, then about a dozen others on the topic and yours was the only one to actually explain what is going on and why the sync is needed. I know if I'd have only watched the other videos I would have walked away still wondering what high speed sync is and why it's needed. You taught so well that after watching this video once, I know the topic well enough to teach it to others without notes. Thanks!
Ah man that video and especially the cards is fantastic, was asked about HSS and realised that I knew when to use it and that it works but couldn't remember why!! Thank you, from Ireland.
Although I do not own any camera yet except my Sony WX50 Point and shoot camera which doesn't support any kind of external flash at all but I think its still wroth understanding how the things work inside the camera. Hats off to you. You are an amazing teacher with best examples. Keep up the good work.
I struggled to figure out where the banding was coming from and no matter how I changed the different variables, I couldn't quite understand. So this is one of the most beneficial things I learnt from all of TH-cam!
Excellent video, clearly explaining HSS. I am a pet photographer and find using HSS (off camera) is great for freezing action when subject is not co-operating being still :)
RealWorld guy! thanks for this and the other videos! they are very easy to follow. I know the video is old, but I just discover some other features of my D7500 and this High Speed flash is one of them, also the way to control the flashes with the body and your videos made it a lot easier to use!! THanks from Mexico
Thanks for the post/feedback and glad to be of help!:) High speed sync is technologically advanced when you think about the process ... amazing that it works:).

Hi, Thank your for this tutorial. But I have issue to get hss working with nikon d750 and v860 . Hss is not working.... Nikon is set to FP250 and godox as you shown to h. Any idea?
I have a D3400 so HSS won't work. But because of your videos on flashes, i picked up two Yongnuo YN685 ITTL flash units and a Yongnuo YN-622N Flash controller and receiver. The flashes have transmitter/ receivers built in , can do high speed sync, and capable to zoom out to 200mm. Nice off camera flashes. Still very good video and informative.
Thanks for the post/feedback Andrew!:) Sounds like you have a good setup!:) I plan to create a fun video using flash (one and two flashes with triggers) ... stay tuned!:)
For D3XXX or D5XXX Nikon bodies or also canon, another trick to using flash (Without HSS because they don't support it) in daylight is to use an ND or even better a Variable ND filter to get the proper exposure.
Glad to be of help!:) I created another video which I talk about flash and triggers that should be of some help: th-cam.com/video/DvpsqFGAG00/w-d-xo.html ... take a look in the description for links to the triggers used in the video.
Nicely done. I have a Neewer VK750 that I just bought. I cannot get HSS to work. Camera is a Nikon D850 set to 1/250 FP. The flash should then show an H on the screen. If I fire a shot, I get a black picture. I'm going to get a replacement.
Thanks for the post Tom:). Unfortunately, the VK750 does not offer HSS. The D850 is a great camera though:). I really like the 750 and have a couple which work great. If you want a HSS capable flash consider the K&F Concepts 882 ( amzn.to/2l944m1 ) which I used in this video.
Dear Mark, thanks for your great video. I have a question for you please: I could use hss with my Nikon D750 and SB-700 on camera but I couldn't with the flash off camera (remote), what can I do?
Glad to be of help!:) The shadow grows larger because the flash sync is not able to match the shutter speed. The max sync speed for the flash is 1/250 of a second. When I set the camera to shoot at 1/250 of second, the entire image sees the flash. When I increase the shutter speed, the flash is unable to keep pace without high speed sync enabled and the image only capture 1/250 seconds worth:).
Great explanation of HSS. I believe the power output of the flash will be reduced in this mode. ¿Is there a calculation that can be made to determine the effective guide number in HSS. Thanks.
Great question/point regarding power when using HSS:). You might think the power would be reduced considering the flash must fire repeatedly to follow the speed of the shutter. Nonetheless, I believe the power remains the same but will need to research further:).
As a newbie into the world of photography I have had this question for sometime. Hopefully you can clarify for myself and other people who may have the same question. Would a D3400 equipped with the BEST LENS money can buy take better pictures than a more top of the line camera (body) with an AVERAGE LENS (given the photographer is the same)
Welcome to the world of photography and thanks for the question!:) Hmmmmm, I have lots to say about this topic:). In short, the ultimate answer involves multiple factors/considerations. Without getting into lots of detail which may warrant a video:), I would say yes for the most part. Many photographers would say to invest in lenses and not bodies. If you had a really old body, I would say upgrade the body. If you had a relatively old body with relatively good specifications, I would say focus on the lens:).
Thanks for the informative video. Could you please advice me the flash which I can use with My Fuji X-T20 . I have just bought this camera and have no experience with photography.
Hi there, I have a question about high speed sync. Let me start by saying that I've used HSS before, So I do understand how it works. However today I was doing a photoshoot and noticed an issue with the photo. I noticed that the top part was coming out a lot brighter than the button, even though I was using HSS to shoot. The shoot took placed during the day around 4pm when it was still bright but not overly sunny. The lens was using an F2.8 aperture. My plan was to use the fill flash to avoid shadows on my subjects face and using HSS so that I could use a faster shutter speed to avoid overexposing the image. With HSS both camera and flash can go as far as 1/8000 of a sec. any advise you can give me will be greatly appreciated.
Sorry, why there is two options of Auto FP? Mine FX is 1/250 and 1/200 max. It's for the built in flash and ext flashes w/o HSS, but why is it two?? Thank you for brilliant explanation of how shutter work faster it's mechanical capabilities!, with this window! I didn't know that.
So I can't take a portrait in a bright sunny day with my 50 mm 1.8G with a wide open f stop number and illuminate the model's face with fill flash when the sun is behind the model with my Nikon D3300 because it doesn't have high speed sync :( Sooo, what can I do to achieve a well lit subject without harsh shadows on it's face and a soft blurry background in that particular situation?
Ahhhhh yes, you have described a unique situation which is tough to manage without a high speed sync flash/body. How would I handle it? Either move the subject or possibly use an ND (neutral density) filter. An ND filter will allow you to create a darker scene which would allow for a wide open aperture and flash.
