But few know the truth about it. We’re helping change that… by helping you know the signs. Know about treatment options and resources. And know you’re not alone.
James Fallon is a professor of neuroscience at University of California at Irvine, and the author of the book The Psychopath Inside. He considers himself a "prosocial psychopath."
He joins us today on zoom to discuss what it is like to be psychopathic.

for example, maybe 1000 years ago, a person with generalized anxiety d/o survived better because they're constantly hyper alert for threats.

Those people, if ordered and benefit is recieved from carrying out those orders, will kill, steal and raid on your behalf.

Nonsense. Bipolar and depression are just two things they come to mind that have no useful purposes in terms of survival. Anxiety neither. Why? Because if you’re too anxious about anything and everything you’ll be overwhelmed and can’t do anything let alone forage for food. I’d like to know the name of that psych and see some evidence. One thing I notice about psychopaths is that they usually don't have any close friends. About the time that a friendship would normally start forming, most people notice that the psychopath isn't good friendship material. Fortunately for the psychopath, they don't care or they don't notice that they don't have friends.

The reasons is simple. We have an extreme sense of freedom. Which mean having people around us is draining.
Not having any kind of responsibility is better than putting it on yourself on purpose. Friends is a liability in that respect.
So its not neccesailly because people take a stand and leave. We just dont engage that far.

@@ss-lz4me Psychopaths don’t have friends because they lack the ability to maintain long term interpersonal relationships. They don’t experience pro social emotions. You can say that this translates into “an extreme sense of freedom” if you have to, but it’s quite merely pathological. It’s not a rational or conscious decision, as many believe, but a fact of psychology. Generally speaking, the idea that one is choosing to be without these relationships by logical process is ironically an example of rationalization.

I think the psychopath is very often NOT a bad or evil person... because they have learned, albeit later in life, to INTELLECTUALIZE, to suppose or postulate, what others must be feeling. And make behavioral choices accordingly. That is emphatically not the same thing as actual empathy, actually feeling what others are feeling. But it can be a viable modus vivendi.

If a normal person was a psychopath for day: imagine you have the uncaring, relaxed blunted fear response and higher pain threshold you get when moderately drunk, although instead of being sloppy and disoriented, you have slightly heightened senses. Imagine a time when you were very tired and hungry, mix in the lower empathy and lower tolerance from that for other people to the experience. All of this, plus just a steady mood, not many highs and very rarely lows.
One point which I find funny, is the lack of cognitive understanding of when to care or fear, yet my body sometimes knows better and shakes a little. Like not being cognitively afraid of heights, yet sometimes my body will shake if it’s risky.

Learn something people: "Although both biological and environmental factors play a role in the development of psychopathy and sociopathy, it is generally agreed that psychopathy is chiefly a genetic or inherited condition, notably related to the underdevelopment of parts of the brain responsible for emotional regulation and impulse control. The most-important causes of sociopathy, in contrast, lie in physical or emotional abuse or severe trauma experienced during childhood. To put the matter simplistically, psychopaths are born, and sociopaths are made."

People don't get that there is such a thing as cognitive empathy. Psychopaths can develop that. A lot of them don't even bother talking about it because they don't feel insecure about it. If their upbringing was great, they probably came up with a way to habitually associate immorality with something that could be linked to more simple emotions like anxiety or something physically uncomfortable. A lot of them can be extremely loyal because of that, even so much so that they'll go overboard sometimes just to be protective.
This isn't anymore selfish than when we more empathetic people try to connect with people emotionally just to scratch that itch and mitigate loneliness or seek forgiveness just for the sake of not feeling guilt anymore.

This all looks very friendly but...you don't need to be a serial killer to kill people. If you for example cause an economic bust as part of the financial elite due to overly risky behaviour thousands can suicide. Chronic stress is an even worse killer. But what is striking is that they are not really aware of how much damage they do. Falun here said that he mistook critqiue to him for some kind of joking or game. I guess that for psychopaths everything feels like a permanent game and that this is why they get bored so easy too - if everything is a game (or in other words less real than to us) it does not get you emotionaly hooked enough. Maybe this is the real Peter Pan Syndrom. I however have to addmitt that psychopathy stretchess our idea of moral guilt: because if you don't have this warning feeling that the "shit is real" how shall you make good moral decision? Furthermore if they don't feel true fear how shall they understand how evil it is to cause fear in others? Maybe better understanding about the differences of the mind can help to reduce the suffering on both sides.

    • @MarioPetrinovich
      @MarioPetrinovich 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Psychopathy is not a manifestation of diversity, it is a handicap, it is malfunction of something that people have. Psychopaths don't have emotions, they are logical. The problem is, people don't understand what "being logical" means. If I kill you, then I will get what you have, this is logical. Evilness is logical, if I harm others, I will be the only one unharmed, and this will be beneficial for me.
Now, if everybody would behave like that, we would kill each other. This is why nature embedded emotions about others into us. And this system works well, we didn't kill each other. It does have one fault, though, it depends on emotions. If the link with emotions in your brain doesn't work, then all hell breaks lose.

She even doesn't understand what crying is for. She thought that it is for manipulating others, and she was training at home how to start to cry (because she saw other girls do that). Then our mother told her that it is not good thing to do that, and this is everything that she knew about crying, that it is not the good thing to do. When she saw me crying, she hurried up to our mom to sue me, to accuse me that I am crying, because she didn't know that people can cry because of emotions. Psychopaths don't have emotions, this is why they are so flat.

    Think I scored 33 out of 40?
(I didn't know it was possible to have both but apparently I got 97% for psychopathy.) 🤷‍♂️
I always thought I could be autistic or something similar because I definitely knew emotionally something was different but couldn't pinpoint what.
I just knew I found most people around me insufferably emotional and pathetic and had low tolerance for their problems unless I felt like gaining something by feigning care.
I do have some anxiety though so that's interesting.
I also technically meet the criteria for Narcissistic Personality Disorder and have some borderline features so I've basically got the full house when it comes to cluster B personality disorders. 🤣
Again; didn't know you could have all of those concurrently.
I wonder if it's more common than realised.

You'd be very upset, even over an inanimate object because you have a strong emotional bond to it. Know what if someone threw away a toy you bought yesterday for your kid, you may be somewhat pissed off a little but hardly any emotion beyond being annoyed for like 10 mins. That's what basically psychopaths go through.

Not true. Ive experienced one first hand. They care about money and status, so they will have good careers and work ethic. If they didn't care, they wouldn't seek power and find people to control and abuse etc..., Because those things serve their ego. They see themselves as superior to others. When you first meet them, they appear normal, but you soon notice a lack of emotions, like they're aliens or something. They rarely smile or laugh but if you piss them off they express rage. They present a normal, person, even accomplished, but are actually very dark psychologically and enjoy manipulating others.

I read a book called The Wisdom of Psychopaths and they addressed that very topic. He talked about the detachment of heart surgeons, brave fearless military pilots, and the soldiers who charge into battle against all odds and do the same thing the next day and the next. Most soldiers are glad when the war ends and can go home, a few find another war and become mercenaries. The author even wrote about one of the astronauts who landed on the moon with only 10 seconds of allotted fuel left and no clear place to land and no home trip if he failed. He asked his copilot for a countdown and found a way given the time and circumstances. Ground control noted that his heart rate barely budged from his normal rate. The "bravery", clear focus and emotional detachment and the mental "rush" absent from the normal bodily physical response can offer benefits to society. Society can also benefit from the emotional, intuitive, empathetic person. They may also put their life at risk but from a very different mental perspective and emotional motivation. They are "brave" because they were afraid to act, but did the right thing because of compassion or they snapped from stress and had to do anything rather than nothing. No matter what the motivation, if the person survives the "selfless act" (or dies) and turns the tide against the opposition, against all odds, they are called heroes. The audiobook was a very good listen and I would recommend it.

@@Paul-ou1rx my family is full of the criminal-type psychopaths. Some sexual predators and a few killers. But I have read enough on this topic to not make ignorant generalisations. I would point out that psychopathy often positively correlates (co-exist) with three other nasty traits: machievilianism, narcism and sadism, grouped together with psychopathy as the Dark Tetrad. Check a book called The Dark Triad: Psychopathy, Narcism, Machievilianism in Everyday Life. Each trait can be described using the big 6:
      1. openness
      2. conscientiousness
      3. extraversion
      4. agreeableness
      5. neuroticism
      6. honesty and humility
The dark triad/tetrad socially aversive actions and manipulative inter/intrapersonal behavioural strategies can be explained from an evolutionary biology perspective, but overall, they are maladaptive and they end up causing more bad than good.
Sure, they make good soldiers. They may even make terrific CEOs like Carlos Ghosn. But eventually, their inter/intrapersonal behavioural strategies gets them in trouble. So they seek help that's if they weren't forced to do so in the first place.

The main problem with psychopathy is that psychopaths cannot be trusted. If they think that might makes right, then there's nothing but maybe fear of punishment to keep them in check, unlike others who have an internal moral compass. Some say they might be what makes for good surgeons and judges, as members of these professions must be mentally stable enough to not be emotionally destroyed by guilt over potential limitations or inevitable mistakes and that will allow them to get on with things, but I think if someone is practicing surgery or making decisions about depriving one's liberty, they should be guided by some sense of responsibility besides paycheck. I have personally met one judge who decided to switch from criminal law to tax law because the decision weighed too hard on him emotionally, so maybe there's some sort of balance, but the extreme of psychopathy is not right for it. For that reason I think it is much better that they are simply euthanized for the sake of everyone else.

Just what guarantees people with emotions are doing the right things, or doing better than people without them? Emotions are equal to justice? Also, there is no such a thing as a "moral compass". A moral compass is a system you learned through your childhood, like a social norm, and this norm differs from society to society. It's a learned behavior, not an inherited one. Psychopaths actually do better with these norms, because they understand them better, and are also not manipulated by their emotions.

Is prosocial psychopath not an oxymoron? And is this really just a conflation of homonyms?
So you have "Psychopath" - person with the usual antisocial traits everyone is familiar, including criminal versatility, narcissism, Machiavellianism etc., as well as the trait "psychopathy" (as below)
Then you have the trait "psychopathy", as described in the dark triad, which pertains specifically to fearlessness, impulsivity and impaired empathy. But it doesn't necessarily have the antisocial components like criminal versatility or Machiavellianism.
If I have that right, then you can have the trait "psychopathy" as described above, without actually being "a psychopath". If you're pro-social, you don't meet the criteria for the latter.
Perhaps it would be easier to rename the trait in the dark triad. If it were just called "Impulsivity and callousness", it would be easier to see that doesn't make someone a psychopath.

Well empathy is just feeling and understanding what others are feeling. So having empathy toward a psychopath would just be understanding what it’s like not to have remorse. I have experienced this before when I’ve had short moments of a psychosis-like feeling, where suddenly none of my emotions are present, and guilt doesn’t exist. (I haven’t been diagnosed so I can’t say whether it was psychosis, and it probably wasn’t). But I don’t see how this is useful.
I think what you’re trying to say is that we should care about them. And that makes sense, from a logical standpoint: if we care for them and are not hostile toward them, they will not be hostile toward us. Even if they don’t really “care” about us in return. Just taking the emotions out of the equation, because they are not applicable here.
Edit: Obviously you shouldn’t trust them; they are untrustworthy by nature. But choosing not to trust someone does not equate to hostility. We can still care for them(unless, of course, they hurt others). They are not bad by default; they are in fact completely neutral-the most neutral you can possibly be.

I don't know why people make it seem like lacking empathy is a crime, its not like empathetic people are incapable of committing immoral acts. How a person adjusts and behaves himself/herself in society is dependent on a lot more factors than just an emotion. I do agree that psychopathic people can have violent tendencies but you don't have to be emotionally driven in order to fit in and understand the rules of society.
