Happy to help! There are lead free solders out there, but no matter what, ventilation is important especially with that quantity. :) Super cool project though!
To avoid the use of solder you could try melting down pure copper, sterling or fine silver wire. You should still have proper ventilation but it's not nearly as toxic ad solder.
Yes also, the spoon may have aluminum or a coating of some kind that would be toxic if burned off...enamel paints are also pretty toxic. The paints wouldn't be so bad, but the best thing to do would be to cast it in a crucible or even a homemade set up like sand. You can easily melt sterling silver jewelry or flatware for small projects, but you have to clean it with a hot solution called a "pickle" to clean off the dross...you can easily use copper with silver bc they work well together copper is the same, you can find it and melt it from other objects-it just turns green on the skin
Try the lead free, silver bearing solder and a soldering iron from the hardware store. It is fine for jewelry making. Also use their flux, the solder flows better. And use ventilation.
Truly appreciating this video cuz it actually shows how to make the pin instead of saying “draw a picture then send it to a factory”. I’m actually gonna start making my own enamel pins this way. Not for sale or anything cuz that would be time consuming!
This is great, every other tutorial I've seen for making enamel pins has been "design it and send the design to this company so they can make it for you".
Yeah - because that's what works. Enamel pins need to be made with industrial equipment and super high temp materials. But go ahead - try making it like this and see how it turns out. Oh and don't forget all the safety equipment you need that he forgot to mention so that you don't get cancer :)
Yeah duh! Whats wrong with you people? Its way better to give your designs to a Chinese manufacturer so they can pump out a couple hundred pins for you, keep the mold, and pump out a hundred thousand for themselves. Whilst all the while hyper polluting the environment by using substandard materials and equipment, undercutting the market, and destroying our economy. Or even better, you can give your design to a pin producer (AKA Fukkin pin vulture) pay at least double to get your design made by the same manufacturer. Only to have both the producer and the manufacturer steal your design. Thats whats up.
kaitlinalana doing it that way is much more cost effective with regard to time/money. Also... everyone’s said it already but poisoning potential. High.
This video was really about how to make enamel pins? To me it was about this guy who finds out how to do stuff in a way I would never thought. And still, seems accessible. I mean, even I could do that, though my blowtorch is for cooking - I hope that it works with this. For real tho, this is awesome.
Right?! This was surprisingly simple, yet brilliant. I'll definitely have to get a cooking blowtorch soon so I can both indulge in homemade creme brulee AND make my own pins, haha!
please dont try this at home. lead solder can cause lead poisoning and cancer, and lead-free solder will have you inhaling chemicals and metals. other comments have left more information about this but please please do your research!
Not to be a downer but even cured solder is insanely weak. I wouldn't be surprised if that broke within the first month. With that torch you might get to aluminum levels and cast a actual metal pin.
just dont use any solder which contains led for this. wouldnt be very healthy. also if it contains flux dont breathe in the fumes it creates while it melts. again not very healthy. doesnt the solder bend quite easily? i feel like that could happen and cause the paint to chip off.
yep...everything you say is correct. Seems dangerous to leave up the video without mentioning any of this, especially after being told by a lot of people in the comments.
Even more reason I give respect to those people who sell custom enamel pins or something on Etsy. Like actual custom ones, not like they ordered it from other websites.
Dude, your DIYs are so cool and unique, it's awesome to see what I could actually create by myself at home with so little (though I'll probably never do it, but I like watching anyway)!
While not enamel, if you'd really like to make pins Shrinky Dinks sealed with Mod Podge or domed with UV resin are quite nice. Definitely less... Toxic than soldering metal.
There are a bunch of things you might want to try as harder wearing alternatives. How about resin with metal powder (or even glow in the dark powder!) rather than the solder base? You might also want to experiment with metalclays like silver clay , you still get to use your blow torch and a lot less problems that the solder! :) do post if / when you try it though as I would like to see!
dude this is so good, i've been looking through like all the tutorials to find how to make them like this and nearly ALL of them use like shrinking plastic THANK YOU FOR SHOWING ME HOW TO DO THIS
you are the only one who legitly showed how to make em as far as the two other internet videos that I sawr. so thanks for that. everyone else is like make your design and ship it into some other clown to make it for you.
The production quality on this channel is astounding. You rarely seen channels with this small amount of subscribers putting this much effort into the videos. Holy shit it always catches me off guard how well the videos are produced. Also great fucking tutorials that aren't just a simple rehash of every other video. Also I love the aesthetic.
Awesome tutorial Brian!! I love your process of using acrylic as molds. I only ever seen people use plaster or silicone for molds so this was pretty refreshing :)
Wow you're the only person on here who actually shows how to make enamel pins, all the other videos just tell you to sketch it and send it a pin making company and they'll make it for you
what even is this?! this is incredible! you provide just enough information for me to be able to try it myself but don't make it complicated! awesome job!
Your shit is so unique and your style is dope. I love you videos because you make things that a guy typically wouldnt make in a guys style allowing us guys to do what you do best
Hey man! I just wanted to thank you for this tutorial. I tried making some of my own pins for our art market and I didn't expect to sell 6 out of 10 of them! :D This tutorial was really helpful for me and I just wanted to let you know :) Thanks man!
this video was not only aesthetically please, but it was very well put together too. I do wish that you mentioned where you can get the supplies you used, but I will say they were easy to find in one day all at my local craft and hardware stores. I attempted doing this project tonight and it wasn't as easy as I thought it would be. using the solder was difficult for me because it dried quickly, but maybe that was on me.
WHY AM I JUST FINDING THIS?!?! I'm super stoked to try this. Thanks for making the video. Love it! You now have a new subscriber and I will be telling all my fellow art major friends to check your channel out as well.
i love this you are doing dangerous stuff like it's nothing, and telling people it's simple as baking cake xD. i can't even sand off aluminium without burning my fingers! anyway, it does look good, but it's a whole lot of work and investment for a little thing
This is the first time I've ever heard of your channel. I'm around 15 seconds in, and I already want to subscribe. Wicked hilarious intro, dude. Love it.
Dudeeeeeeeee. I just found your channel and you are fucking AWESOME! Your videos are so informative and helpful, and I love that you go all in on projects, you don't just kinda throw something together half-assedly. Cudos to you.
Dude this is an amazing way to DIY those pins! But just a heads up to everyone that solder does have lead in it so be careful when heating it and don't put the pin in your mouth or anything.
How do I make a blowtorch?
SiggEye $50 Home Depot
U don’t need a blowtorch u could probably use a candle or just the melty part of a soldering iron? If that makes sense.
Hair spray and a lighter but hold the lighter a few inches away from the hairspray or IT WILL EXPLODE. Have fun

You should be careful with solder. Work in a well ventilated area and be aware that it has lead in it.

lol in my robotics class they make us wear masks so we don't breathe it in.
Omg! Dont use electrical solder. Use the stuff for jewelry. The electical kind is not good to keep near your skin.
Ooooops... good to know 😅

It would have been easier to make the mold by drawing and scratching the image into unhardened polymer clay (like Fimo) instead of the clear plastic.
Emmuzka
I was gonna say you couldn't reproduce your work, and then I remembered that you can bake the clay to keep a permanent mold.
Yah... I tried it with clay and I was having a hard time keeping the detail .. but maybe I was just using the wrong clay.
Yeah, "professional" clays like Premo keep the details perfectly, hobby and kids brands like Fimo are more challenging.
