For a tip when starting these 390/360/352/460 with points, you can't leave the key on too long. otherwise, you will burn them points up. Your Bendix is going out on your starter, plus you need a bigger carburetor650/700
Awesome video. I learned a few things from watching it. I hope to find a 1965 F250 custom cab camper special in caribbean turquoise one day. My father bought one brand new in upstate NY and he got a nice slide in camper with it. So many wonderful memories of either going to hunting camp and Grandma's house traveling in that truck. Tbis will give me something to do in my retirement one day. Cheers!
Thanks a lot! Seems like sometimes it takes some effort to find these old trucks especially in a specific color, but they’re still out there. Good luck finding one!
At one time for me it was a 1965 F250, with a Thunderbird 428 and 1960 Ford Super Stock cast iron headers. Had 2.5 inch dual truck mufflers and turn downs. Standing near at idle and your chest could feel the exhaust pulsations. Art Carr modes to Ford automatic from same Thunderbird.. Cab over camper and accelerated past 90 mph going South up the I5 Grapevine. Great for trailing horses and I miss it.
Ford made them they have a step up by the door. A lot of TH-camrs call truck high boys when they are not because they don't know the difference. If you check on here you will see and no e have the step up
Keep a propane bottle & torch tip with you. Its great for chasing down vacuum leaks just crack open the valve a lil bit & work your way around the engine
you always come up with the coolest vehicles to work on :) but looks like you will have your hands full with the wiring mess, hope it all goes well! :), I just helped a friend with a fuel gauge problem related to sending unit, I found it hard to find the proper sending unit (impedance) to match the fuel gauge impedance (in ohms measured) they vary widely in ohms and if not matched it would show wrong fuel level or if open can make the gauge peg backwards, good luck ! but all this makes it fun :)
Oh yea, this was a super cool truck! And extremely fun to work on. That’s interesting info about the fuel gauge, is that due to mixing and matching parts from different vehicles, or new parts not built to the specs needed?
@@Rustwrangler I typed in a long reply on how and what i used to simulate a sending unit to test and match a fuel gauge and either I didn't click reply or Utube removed it maybe because I had given the brand name and or because I abbreviated wire wound potentiometer as "POT" maybe I forgot to hit reply or enter and it erased it all :)
My thoughts... vacuum leak from the brake booster/hose? Thin coat of grease on the carb gasket (both sides) to help the seal and prevent it from sticking? Water in the fuel tank? Since its a rebuilt FE, it would be a good idea to use some carb cleaner to test for intake to head vacuum leaks, but you need to pull the valve covers to do that.
Good idea on the thin coat of grease on the carb gasket, I did at one point unhook and plug all of the vacuum lines to eliminate any possibilities of a bad line.
@@Rustwrangler Yep, once you eliminate the air and fuel issues, all that leaves is electrical/timing. BTW, the way my dad showed me to adjust timing at idle, he used a timing light and a vacuum gauge at the same time, find that sweet spot of enough initial advance without making it hard to start.
I had a 62 . Mine had 10 inches of clearance between the top of the tire and the fender arch . I put a 390 automatic in it a two stage mastercylinder and power brake booster . Loved that truck .yours sits to low . Tire to fender is wrong .
Hello yea taking over someone elses project can be a pain nice to see you got things worked out .p.s. On the passenger side fender does it say ( Farm and Ranch if so i seen this truck at the plowing match in lynden sat it was parked next to me i did a double take because of the size and height then your video poped up of that same truck today sweet 🏆🤔
The last 10% of a build is almost always where interest is lost. The little things are time consuming and it's hard to visualize the project moving forward when you're doing things like wiring, body work, etc. Throwing in a motor or doing a body swap is more visually satisfying.
Absolutely, there were times when I was building my c10 that I would walk away from it a month at a time and had to pick away at a few little things here and there to get that excitement going again.
I have a buddy that starts tons of hobbies. He spends a ton of money on them but doesn't finish them. He built a building to "work " and store them in. When that building became filled He tore it down and built a bigger building. Sounds like he's rich, right? Nope, he constantly complains how he is one foot away from the poor house. And it's true, I do his taxes. It's super easy but he paid a service to do it previously. Example. He bought a used John Deer rider. Stripped it all down ,new motor, new deck , new tires and authentic green paint and decals. All the top tier equipment to paint it. And it sits in the building unused because it needs a new starter switch. As does the Ford Ranger . He did sell the Mercedes that he fully restored for half of what he had invested in it🥴
Why would anyone give up on a project like that? I would give my left you know what for a truck in that condition. My dream truck is a mid 70's F250 high boy. I had a 77 many years ago but sold it like an idiot. Now you can't find one for decent money. Hope it works out. You will have a nice truck when it is finished...
Oh yea, these trucks are getting harder and harder to find, I know of another body swapped 70 highboy just down the road that needs rust repair, body work and paint, and the guy thinks it’s worth gold.

Thanks for the tip on the points. Once I threw a new starter on there it was a night and day difference, starts like a champ now.
Old school, ignition, points condenser & such , but yeah , oh yeah , no doubt burn them points out , like that.
Yeah i burned few up in past😂
That is a pretty clean truck!
Yea it was super clean, the guy we got it from actually did a pretty good job on the build up until he lost motivation.
@@Rustwrangler that wiring job even scared me lol
Mighty nice truck.
Thank you!
I thought I saw that truck for sale a while back and thought it was pretty awesome

Im doing the same thing with a 65 mercury. Im putting it on a 80s chassis with a 351 5speed.
R.W.,, GREAT VIDEO AND TRUCK,, SO MANY WIRES .. THANKS FOR THE VIDEO I LEARN ALOT FROM YOU ...
Yessir, it was a mess of wires! But it’s cleaned up now and looking and running great! Thanks
Never heard of a “high boy” truck ……tractor , yes . I assume that’s another term for a lifted 4x4 truck ?

Great idea, thanks for the tip! I’ll have to try that out next time.
That's the Ferd F-Teen Thousand!!! It is technically 8 tanks.
I'll take it!😊 1:39
I have always wanted one of those 4wheel drives. They look great that way
Yes they do, this truck looks beefy in person, it’s great!
The process is how you learn
40:40 I can't hear you over here😂
Nice! Excited for this series, I have a similarly set up truck except on a '71 chassis with 460 and C6.
Maybe new points from leaving key on.
That's a 2 wheel drive look at the bed! It's had 4x4 added.
That’s correct, it’s on a highboy chassis.
Maybe check the gear at the end of the distributor

I don’t recall seeing farm and ranch on the passenger fender, might be another truck like it running around.
Did you don't know if you cancelling vac dadada or condenser. fixed it
Condenser was definitely what fixed it.
Check the lug nuts, my wheel came off when i got mine going. You never know what the last guy did.
Definitely, I checked them, they were good and tight!
@@Rustwrangler oh and nice find that condenser. Most don’t know these days how bad the points and condenser can mess with you.
Bad idea setting the carb on battery terminals 😂
Plug hose going to brake booster.
Shouldn't the rotor be pointed at the first piston on passenger side when top dead center
yes it should point #1 piston on passenger side not #1 on the cap
