    Here in Monterrey Mexico a local TV station has one Unimog to climb the Cerro de la Silla to carry goods to engineers that are in the repeater station in the most high part of the mountain. No other truck can do that, in fact, climbing walking is a risky task, but the televisa unimog works fine for that.

    The orange one is a configuration many municipalities have. The big wind shield and extra short snout gives great visibility, especially when manoeuvring tight roads and corners in old towns and villages. Also great for observing your attachments, like when it's used as a snow plough or street sweeper.

      And in the smaller Unimog model you can move the steering wheel and instrument cluster to the other side of the vehicle and drive from that side!

      @@Retrotyp Municipal or firefighting-vehicles are popular for camper-conversions because (obviously cheaper than new and) they usually have little mileage/engine hours while having good maintenance/a recorded history. A Unimog that spent 30 years on a farm can be an absolute moneypit in comparison.

    A few months ago, I was at a long queue at a border check, several lines going parallel to each other. To my left was a Unimog like this one, we drove alongside each other for about an hour . The cargo compartment had been converted to a caravan. An elderly couple (probably retired) in the cabin. Boy did those 2 nail the retirement, going from country to country to offroad in that thing. I couldn't lift my eyes off it

    As long as most still use "Horsepower" your miles/gallons/fahreinheit are downright modern! Also: I rode one of those in the german military offroad in 88. We really tried to get it stuck and didn't manage.We went into holes with water up to the windows - the Unimog just went through.

      My neighbour has an ex-Australian army Unimog, it is such an impressive and well thought-out machine. The army use MAN HXs now, but I wonder how they compare and if occasionally there are situations they wish they still had the Unimog.

      There is a saying that there is no place where you can't get to with an Unimog and if you find one you get a Hägglunds to explore it. The Hägglunds BV 206 isn't that versatile and fast, but offroad it gets everywhere.

      @@mortified776 . Way back when the Australian Army bought the Mack 6x6's to replace the Old 6x6 C-1800 International " Blitz " Wagons , they ended up keeping several of the Inters . As TOW Trucks . Mack's kept getting bogged . Progress huh ? 🤣

      Keep in mind, that German "PS" (Pferdestärke = Horse Power) is not the same as American HP. PS is defined with metric units (and a horse). 1PS ~ 735W; 1HP ~ 746W.
      Units can be quite confusing, but the most confusing is Pound/Pfund. Basically every country had its own definition and they were very different. One "Zollpfund" (a pound defined by the Zollverein based on the common pound in the regions previously occupied by the french) is exactly 500g=0,5kg and is still used in colloquial German. There is also still a Zentner (100Pfund=50kg)
      So having a single unit everyone understands, is actually a great break through, since you can now cross the border from Bavaria to Austria and 1kg stays 1kg. So much easier for international trade.

    Years ago, we had a U90 where I work. Just 90 hp and the engine already was a bit worn out. It was underpowered and slow, a pain in the ass driving it on a paved road. But in first gear, nothing could stop it. Once we had to pull a 4 ton trailer up a steap hill, maybe 35-40%. No road, no gravel, just a November-wet farmer's field. First gear, all wheel drive and differencial lock active and let the Unimog do its magic. It crawled up that hill like it was the easiest thing on earth.

    When i was younger i got to ride in one in an event where they demonstrated what these could do and the feeling when this thing clings onto a steep incline/decline is really wierd. You constantly have the feeling that its gonna tip over but it is nowhere near its limit.
    PS: On the hood it says "Der Alleskönner" which means the one who can do everything / the jack of all trades.

    You can get them with a special gearbox for "crawling mode", which is for swampy areas where a stand still vehicule would soon sink into the ground. There you block the steering so that the vehicule turns in a circle, put in the crawling mode and the vehicule makes its turns without a driver whilst the crew gets off and does its work. From time to time you change the place of the circles.

    Greetings from northern Germany.
    If you like the Unimog, you should check out the former Eastern Germany "Multicar". It is also a versatile truck, but smaller, maybe "cuter" if you want. It's no comparison to the Unimog but the Multicar survived the fall of the Berlin wall as one thing good enough to keep alive and built until today. Where I live Multicars are more common than the Unimog because they are quite cheap. And you get a lot of "Jack of all trades" out of this thing too. :D

      Here in southern Croatia Multicar is exclusevly communal vehicule that usually carry work basket for cutting dry branches on threes, changing lightbulbs, decorating on holidays and for street sweep version with water tank that sweeps and washes downtown center.
      But Unimogs are in much greater supply despite price. Unimog can be seen everywhere.

      @@revsnowfox5798 Yes, they do their jobs. Multicar can enter narrow mediteranien streets, enter inside buildings and yards.
      Balcancar forklifts are not that common in west/south, they still lack finesse of Still, Jungheinrich, Kalmar and Linde. But in time they will be there. I have no doubt about it.
      Multicar now and Mulicar from 1980s are two similar but still separate things.

    The Unimog was such a hit with farmers, that Mercedes-Benz eventually turned it into a full blown agricultural tractor. Its called MB-Trac and was practically a field work optimized version of the Unimog. They look sick and are still highly valuable if held in good condition. Production stopped in 91 iirc. Maybe you want to also have a look at them. 😁

      The MB-Trac was so ahead of it's time. Sure Schlüter, Deutz and Fendt had their own variations like the euroTrac, intrac and xylon. Interesting to note would be that the only systemtractor in this configuration that still has mainstream success is the JCB Fastrac which isn't only the fastest production tractor it also holds several speed records in modified versions

    The orange one is essentially the spec for maintaining community's. That version is neither right hand drive nor left hand drive but both at the same time. You can essentially just slide the entire steering collum and pedals over to the other side of the cabin to better observe your equipment while cleaning guardrails or mowing or cutting trees and stuff like that. In Switzerland there's a remote village that has a Unimog trash truck lifted by cable car to collect trash. If you like the Unimog I'd suggest you also check out the Zetros which is essentially a gigantic Mercedes semi truck designed with the same go anywhere do anything mentality as the Unimog. Or you might like the MB-Trac which is an actual farm tractor designed to be able to carry equipment on itself while still being able to attach stuff like a conventional tractor and it also had the ability to rotate the seat, steering and pedals to make reverse working easier. You may also like the 6x6 G-Class although I'm sure you've seen Richard Hammond in that thing.

    The video of the yellow UNIMOG you see with the GER (means the city of Germersheim/ Rheinland Palatine Germany) License plates is from the UNIMOG Testing Grounds . The plant they are build is nearby. The blue one with the SOKPlates is from (Saale-Orla-Kreis / Thuringia Germany By the way these are the current models of the UNIMOG.

      No these are not the current models. The new ones have a fiber glass cabin and another front for a better view of front mounted tools. Model types are U 327, U 435 and U 535.

    The Unimog u500 was sold in the States as a Freightliner, by Daimler in the early 2000’s. There are a few videos on TH-cam. The whole steering system can be switched from left hand drive to right hand drive and the transmission can be switched from automatic to manual (with a fold down clutch pedal, apparently!).

    Fun Fact: you can auction for unimogs formerly run by public service (including the army version) on german state run websites. Sometimes you "have" to buy them in 10er quantities

    you can actually buy these quite easily, especially used ones. depending on age, size and mounted attachment, they go for 16k up to 150k for used one. the US Army had one version made for them in the early '90s, the U 419, so maybe you can get one of these if they still exist.

    The SOK plate is from Salle-Orle-Kreis in Thuringen, East Germany. Afte reunification, most three-letter plates were re-allocated to East German counties.

    4:54 Unimogs are sometimes diesel, sometimes multifuel; meaning they can run everything: diesel, petrol, raw oil, frying oil, etc.

    I just noticed when you asked the blue truck in the snow where it was taken that the license plate number is SOK-U4023. Germany is divided into federal states and these are divided into districts. Every license plate in Germany begins with letters indicating the district. SOK stands for the district in which I live and means Saale-Orla-Kreis in Thuringia. A beautiful area that has a lot to offer.

    NZDF used a range of UNIMOGs from the 1970s until recently but are now using MAN HX60 , HX58 & HX77 military trucks , and this year got HX 8x8 HRVs They use Pinzgauers for light transport

    You can buy them also as a two-way vehicle for road-rail shunting. It drives on rails and roads in industrial areas and is able to pull 1000 tons of railway waggons.

    BTW, the standard fuel tanks are in the range between 24 and 34,5 gallons, but you can actually get tanks with up to 343,5 (!) gallons on the larger UNIMOGs.

      Use metric units - with those there is no misunderstanding. The tank size for a big Unimog is 600 liter and the specialty with every Unimog tank is that it is only mounted on three points to decouple it from the frame torsion when driving. Standard size for the light Unimog (eg Unimog 402) is 90 liter, but the enhanced versions get a 120 liter tank and the midsized Unimogs have an 180 liter tank.

    There are many configurations that set the price. A new one can cost US$ 400,000 while a used model is affordable for just $ 20,000 to $ 30,000 plus shipping to the US. But I believe that $ 80,000 to $ 150,000 is the average price range.

    We used a 1959 model in the military with a top heavy box for comms: 6 cylinder gas engine (5 mpg - lol), no power steering, no power brakes, heating only for the driver, top speed61 mph downhill with a tail wind - BUT, that thing could climb anything - amaxing

    The blue mog was registered in Saxony just west of a region called the Saxony Swiss,
    which is on the border between Saxony and the Check Republic,

    Greetings from Stuttgart, the development place of this beast.
    Basically I had one part of the job interview with my current team leader IN one of these (crew cab with a beautiful (but not practical...) wooden bed, crawler gears, pneumatic suspended seats in the front) Units on the off road test course at Daimler Truck.
    Was a great experience to feel what this machine is capable of. 2500 rpm at like 0.5 mph at 70% grade. Felt like a roller coaster pulling you to the top. The pneumatic seat was also really great. With your feet you felt what the vehicle did, but in the seat it was all mutet and softened.
    What a machine.

    on the license plate is SOK which belongs to the Saale-Orla-County in the south-eastern part of thuringia. The river Saale starts in the Fichtelgebirge and I guess, the footage has been taken near the origin of this river in this mountain area

    As a student, I worked odd-job-wise (I didn't have a bowler-hat with a razor sharp brim though) for a carpenter who made playground-furniture and had a tatty seventies Mog with a little crane mounted on the trailer. It was quite an experience riding in it with some sort of playground-tower, two swings, a seesaw and a lot of tools on the bed and his australian shepherd on my lap. It feel like being on a watchtower, or rather on the bridge of a ship that's swaying about. The weirdest is that there are eight gears and the top speed was about 50mph, so the sound of the engine doesn't fit the speed in the way one is used to. However, he hardly ever let anyone else drive it. I only once drove it at less than walking pace for about 50 metres when drilling holes for a fence.

    I've seen a few ex-army Unimogs purchased by the public over here in Australia and converted to mobile homes / campers for trips around the country. You can pick them up at the ex-military auctions. Don't know how much they are but would have to be cheaper than a new one. There's also a 4x4 rescue guy who uses one in the Victorian High Country. I freakin love these things.

      Yes, similar situation here in Germany. But because they are pretty common vehicles over here, you'll be able to buy used ones from a variety of sources, not just the military.

    I watched another video on a Unimog and they had 200 gallons of fuel in 2 tanks. He used an inboard transfer pump. He could use one tank, then the other tank, or both tanks at once. Good reaction. thanks for sharing.

    Around 100 litres, or 26.4 gals. Yes it's diesel. If you want more to know about the course goolgle "Unimog Testgelände Ötigheim". Most of the footage was taken there.
    There's not a standard model. Every Unimog will be custumized as the customer wants it. But that fits on every agricultural machine here.

    This Thing is so Awesome ^^ (the first ones Name was The All-Rounder) I Tell you my First contact with the Grandfather from this Beast . 1976 i was 5 years "old" A Farmer drove an UNIMOG as that was it made (sorry for my Grammar)and tilled the field with a plough. The hood was gone to support the engine. It was so Amazing . Torque of Death Of Doom

    Drove the unimog and the MPV (Buffel) version and got blown up in the MPV during the Bush War in Namibia and Angola, incredible vehicle.

    I like the Unimos from the 80th more. I've grown up driving one from that generation. It was so much fun, being 14 and driving the Unimog on the fields of my uncle.
    He said "You can drive it if you can fix it." It took me a year and a lot of help from my uncle. :-)

    Some years ago I went on a trekking on Etna vulcan, in Sicily, and the guide tooks us on the pick using a Unimog based bus... That was hella cool!

    5:00 a quick search shows 47 gallons, or 180 liters for the U5000 model, which is one of the later versions.
    the current engine is the OM 924 LA, a 4.8 liter turbo charged 4 cylinder diesel which adheres to Euro 3 emissions regulations.
    mainly used in city/coach busses.

    The UNIMOG is not sold at a reguar Mercedes dealership, they are sold over the external Mercedes truck department. They also have a online configurator for MB trucks and the UNIMOG is listed there.

    The most fun I've had in four wheels was with one of those more utilitarian ATVs with huge tires, diff locks, and a winch. Racing is fun, but driving in outrageous terrain is on a different level

    I had one of those Mercedes experience days once. First, we got to drive an AMG sports car around a small track, then we did some drifting on a wet surface and some break testing. Afterwards, we moved to an M-Class and onto an off-roading test track. The off-roading was of course a completely different experience, very slow, but so cool. I wouldn’t have thought so beforehand, but I enjoyed the off-roading way more than being on the track.
    Now to be fair, it was a pretty terrible track, very short and without any fast corners. But still, the off-roading was on another level. The coolest bit was when we went through a V-shaped channel. Because of the shape, there’s always only 3 tires touching the ground with one tire being up in the air. As you manoeuvre through the channel, sometimes the airborne tire switches, say from front-left to rear-right which results in the car pivoting forwards. That felt insane to an off-road-noob like myself. For a second you think that you’ll flip over. It was crazy fun.

    used to drive a Unimog during military service. We managed to dug it in in mud, driver side 5 ft deep in mud, co drivers side 2 ft deep. But got it out with the 30 metric ton back winch (front winch just had 10 tons payload). Had also a 120ft crane on it for working on antennas, and a manhole drill - which in fact was a anchor drill. 5 min for drilling 1ft dia, 6 ft deep, for putting tower bankers. Quite a beast. 8 gears forward plus 8 terrain gears, and a switch for forward and backward. So we had 32 gears for advancing. Lowest terrain gear allowed max speed of less than 1 mph, but with tremendous pulling force.

    Depending on the model series, a Unimog has a tank capacity of 145 to 235 litres (i.e. 38 to 62 gallons).

      That's actually a little less than I would've expected, but not by much. My tank (VW T4) holds 80 liters but I also get a mileage of less than 6 liters/100 km ( ~42 U.S. MPG) out of it, which I suspect is quite a lot more than the average Unimog can do.

      ​​@@DowncastParadoxPlenty of room usually to add more fuel tanks. I've got two extras and so far remote travel has only once needed transfer into the original 'day tank'. Around 15mpg imperial, which is about 12mpg US. Better than my old petrol 280GE G Wagen!

    You can use it for anything because it is a UNI(versal) MO(tor) G(erät) - so a universal motor tool, which describes it pretty well.

    Depending on the number plate in the footage of the blue one in the snow it could be in a slightly mountainous area in the eastern part of Germany. Here in Germany a lot of Unimogs are used in forrestal work and for various duties like you mentioned already. Riding in the more modern versions is not uncomfortable but more feels like in a big truck, not an SUV.

    Places you can go with it: McDonald's drive through, tank driving school track.

    To answer your question from 6:12: At 6:07 you can see the plate pretty well - and the SOK on there is the giveaway: Saale-Orla-Kreis - which is an administrative district a little south-east of the geographic center of Germany, fairly close to the big bend in the Czech-German border. I wouldn't call the area 'mountaineous', but it most certainly isn't flat land either. Not by a looong stretch. As such it very much makes sense for such a vehicle to be used there.
