- I found this American leather splitter / skiver wasting away in the back of the museum and I knew it had to be rescued. The restoration was stright forward and we employed standard restoration techniques and tools. with one exception. My normal rust removal process of electrolysis and a wire wheel could not be used due to the delicate nature of the precision machined rollers. I decided to use the CRC rust remover and it worked perfect. It removed 100% of the rust and left the metal bright ready for oil. very impressive stuff.

not only am i loving watching the old stuff be returned to shiny new goodness, its seein these antique pieces of equipment i never knew existed. the ingenuity of the ppl who invented these things just blows me away!
Looks like it's ready for another 100 years of work. American made some darn good machines. Keep that blade sharp and you'll never have trouble. Or you could send the whole thing to me :) I'll make sure the blade stays sharp.

Nice restoration love to see old tools saved from obscurity with the added bonus of it being 100% fit for purpose at the end, restoration to useable is always better than restoration to artwork/decoration

I love watching you restore old tools. I used a leather splitter something like this in my youth when I would skive down new leather soles to "to restore" an old pair of cowboy boots.
Beautiful work. My grandmother would keep old machines for me when they broke when I was a kid, like sewing machines etc. She knew I loved to take them apart and “play” with all the bits and inner workings. A few times I would put them back together and they worked. Most of the time I had no idea how I fixed it but from then on I was the fix it guy in the family!😂. Thanks for the memories.❤️

+Ron Tieuli It took a while, they are hand made and were back ordered. It's well worth the wait. Just ordered the smaller one that went on sale yesterday. Should arrive in 7 to 10 days.
Just started watching this video. The title got me, Leather splitter. I know it as a skiving machine. Back in the 70's, I worked in a shoe factory and had to do 4 hours on an electric one. I lost count how many vamps I ruined, but I neveer went back to the machine again. lol.
since all the u-tube guys are using CRC. supporting the shows we all love. I will support them and buy the product. I have use them and they are as good as anyone else makes

Nice job. Used to operate a full sized leather splitter many years ago when I worked at a tannery. Could split the whole hide. Nice to see a small one working.

+Bruce Jones I was a body tech for years which helps but when I get stumped I can always go back and look at the video. I remember one nightmare Audi I worked on. It was a brand new model SUV. The customer was upset at the shop that disassembled the car and had it moved to our shop. The car showed up in boxes and It was so new that I had no clue how it went back together. It was an insanely overcomplicated car and it took forever.

Really cool that you used a sandblaster to get rid of rust/old paint , most people restoring anything on youtube don't even use one . It was cold here this morning around - 28 .ew.

Restoring an old tool with an old tool... the amount of work that spanner has likely seen would boggle the mind.

I bought a machine of this type, but different manufacturer at an auction here in the UK, fierce bidding, paid about £60 / $75 for it. No idea what it was used for, just wanted to free it up and get it rotating, so your your demonstration was informative. Thanks Justin.
60 pounds is a steal for a splitter! I paid 250 for an older Dixon and it was still a good buy. Who made yours? Is it also hand-cranked? Can't remember any hand-cranked models made in UK from the top of my head.

Just yesterday (UK) I’ve picked up a Keats & Bexon Stafford for £50 exactly the same as this model in the video, works and turns fine just needs a good clean up, would love to do what this video has shown but scared it won’t go back together properly.

antique leather splitter: ....my 2bd time watching: Justin...sir: I RUN a leather belt like you show...and I have one, well...a clamp like this (smaller) to deal with...circumstances... similar to tend to my belts. Well done. That made me do some refurbs... as we all should.... thanks

Like the use of a liquid wrench type of rusted nut breaker that so many of the restoration people seem to fail to use resorting the heat and drills.

It came out great. I really liked your photography in this one. I have had personal experience with a brown recluse spider and its flesh killing venom.
They gave me so much penicillin I could taste it. It took quite a while to get well from that.

The original patina on the wooden handle was great. You should have just cleaned and oiled it. That rattle can paint won’t hold up as well as the original paint. I liked that you didn’t paint all the small parts. A lot of guys paint EVERYTHING.
I know this is not a space ship...but....dang....it always amazes me how they built gear back in day....all drafting ...no c p s.....👍🇺🇸
HILLER DEVILDOG Thing is, these machines were sturdy but they often had 3x the number of parts they really needed. Remember Hand Tool Rescue's belt lacer? That thing was more complicated than a Piper Cub.
